Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update guideWhat is Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update?

Android Nougat is the latest version of Android released in August 22, 2016.  There are lots of new features and improvements in Android Nougat (both Android 7.0 and Android 7.1).

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge was released with previous version of Android (Android Marshmallow). Samsung invited beta testers for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update in November 2016 to try the unofficial firmware in selected regions.

The beta program stopped by the end of 2016. Now, Samsung is ready to roll out the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 globally.

Since January 2017, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will start to receive the Android Nougat (Android 7.0) udpate gradually. It is expected that by the end of Q1 2017, majority of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge devices will get the Android Nougat update.

List of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update guides

New features in Android Nougat (Android 7.0) were introduced in the udpate. At the same time, Samsung also tweaked the UI for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The new UI is similar to that of the recalled Galaxy Note 7.

Why I haven’t received the Android Nougat update for my Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge?

There are several factors affecting the availability of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update.

First,  like other vendors, Samsung rolled out update in a controlled steps. If there are some issues in the Android Nougat udpate, they have enough time and resources to handle them.

This is the reason why the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be initially rolled out in selected regions only.

Second, all firmware update requires approval from carriers (if the devices are sold through carriers). Some carriers may be slower than others to test and approve the update.

Thirdly, the updating server may be overloaded sometimes. In this case, you may find you cannot get the update.  But this should last only a couple of days.

Anyway, you can check update in Settings– About device. You can enable Download updates automatically so that the phone can automatically download the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge in the background.

When you leave the phone app without hanging up, you should tap home button, then tap the app. The call should continues. You can use recent button to go back to phone app if you need to input anything.

the timer was relocated to camera settings. You need tap settings icon to enable or disable it.

yes, it is not convenient because you cannot instantly toggle it on or off in preview screen.

I have lost the status bar and notification bar on my home screen. Every other screen still has it. How do I retrieve this for my home screen where I need it the most? I have tried refreshing the cache in recovery mode and I have booted it up in safe mode but the same problem remains. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you got the same problem in safe mode, you probably have to back up the phone and try a factory data reset.

Why take out a feature that was unique to the phone? I updated today and it looks so far good besides the edge color feature. The whole thing. Thats what made the edge the edge. There is still the little blip on the side but even without the color. Nothing pops up from my edge contacts. Beyond dumb. If I could uninstall I would just to have that feature back

My experience with the Nougat upgade is really pathetic.
I can’t go to the home screen by clicking the home button one time now.
It’s showing google assistant, even if I press long, same result.
How can I go to the home screen, i don’t want to use the back button multiple times for the same result.
    Please give me a solution.

You got Google assistant because you pressed the home button too long. You just need press home button once to go back to home button. Long press is for Google assistant.

Did you enable any accessibility settings?

You can try to clear cache partition to see whether it helps.

If not, you can then try to back up the phone and try a factory data reset.

If factory data reset still cannot solve the issue, then it is a hardware issue and you have to visit local Samsung service center to fix it.

I used to be able to swipe down on my notifications on the lock screen to see the entire notification, and then if I had already swiped down, I’d just need to click it once and it’d unlock the screen and go to that app.

Now, since 7.0, I have to swipe down to view the whole notification, then when I click it, it adds a new step where the screen blurs and says “Swipe screen to open”. Is there a way to NOT have to Swipe screen to open? I’d really like to go right from clicking the expanded notification to its relevant app…

Galaxy S7, with the new update I now have to click on “View All” in order to read all of a text message. This is very annoying, and I want to disable it so that all of the text is shown. How do I do that?

I was trying to find an answer to this myself, having already explored all of the annoying options menus. By making things ‘easier’ the damn android software programmers keep making things more difficult by adding more steps between options. I understand the “view all” function for messages, but they should understand that not everyone wants to use that option and would rather have the whole message available to read along-side other messages.

Like Monica I’m really pissed to lose this option. It was my favorite Edge feature. My love for this phone has certainly paled. I loved being able to see at a glance whether my boss or daughter had emailed, called or texted me without searching through all of my emails, missed calls, etc. It was the number one thing I told people about that were trying to decide what phone to get. It was the feature that differentiated the phone in a market flooded with options.

      I assume I can’t uninstall the update. :-/

You cannot uninstall Android update. If you really need the old version, you have to flash the phone with old firmware and disable automatic updates. Some Samsung service centers may help to do this. Don’t do it by yourself unless you know what you are doing.

My S7 updated earlier this week. Did the ability to look at different dates in the calendar go away with Nougat? For example, if I wanted to look at a date in the past or future, I could just tap and enter the month or year. I can’t do that now and have to scroll either way if I need to look at a past or future date. Very annoying.

You can flash the phone to old firmware. But it’s not trivial. You need find the firmware for your region/carrier. Then you can flash through Odin in download mode. Please note some Odin distributions may contain malware.

Don’t do it unless you understand what you are doing.

Anyway, it’s not recommended to flash back because you will never get new security patches unless you update the phone to latest firmware.

I really dislike not being able to have the individual colors for certain people i had selected on my people edge. This really sucks cause it takes away from the phone. That was one of the best features. Why would they get rid of it and use 1 color for everyone. I want it back to the way it was. So we can add more people on the edge but doesn’t really matter if there is no way to separate from all the other callers.

Dual sim version of Galaxy S7 and S7 edge is dual standby, not dual active. By default, when you are on a voice call or sending SMS on one sim card, the other sim card will not be reachable. Once a sim card is unreachable, the caller will be routed differently depending on your sim card settings with your carrier (not on the phone). It can be your voicemail, or unreachable tone, or diverting to other numbers deepening on your settings with your carrier (again, it has nothing to do with the phone). This is what you experienced when on a call with EE.

The reason is that for dual standby phones, there can be only one active connection because two sim card share one set of hardware. But sim card can “listen” to their own network through time sharing. But when you are engaged in a call through 2G network, the sum card will take over the hardware and the other sim card cannot connect.

But if you are using voice through VoLTE, which uses packet switching, the sim card will not take over the hardware. The other sim card can still “listen” to it’s network. When someone calls you on this number, you will get notified on the incoming call. In this case, you can not use hold or wait. You can ignore it. If you do anything on the incoming call, you current call will stop. This is what happened when you are engaged in calls with Virgin SIM.

Please VoLTE works only if both networks (caller and receiver) supports it.

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge only supports one 4G + 2G (the sim card slot doesn’t matter). This means only one sim card can use VoLTE.
