Galaxy S8 layout (and Galaxy S8+ layout) guide shows you the location and explains the functions of the buttons, cameras, sensors, ports, SIM card slot, NFC antenna and other components in Galaxy S8 and S8+.
You should spend a few mins to familiarize yourself with Galaxy S8 layout when you get the phone so that you can use Galaxy S8 and S8+ properly and effectively.
Please note, as explained in Galaxy S8 specs and Galaxy S8+ specs, the only difference between Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ is the size of the two phones (Galaxy S8+ is bigger with a bigger battery).
The layout of Galaxy S8 is identical to Galaxy S8+ layout.
Galaxy S8 layout: front view
The front view of Galaxy S8 layout is illustrated below.
Screen and edge screen
Samsung touts the infinity display as one of the major new design features of Galaxy S8 and S8+. This is evidenced by the front view of Galaxy S8 and S8+.
About 85% of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ front is occupied by the screen.
Because curved screen is used in Galaxy S8 (and S8+), edge screens can be found in both sides.
Hardware buttons
Power key is still in the right side and volume keys in the left in the front view of Galaxy S8 layout. If you have problems to power on Galaxy S8 or S8+, you may check this guide.
A new Bixby button was added below volume button.
If you often hit the Bixby button inadvertently, you may disable the Bixby button in Galaxy S8 and S8+.
Navigation buttons
There are no capacitive buttons in Galaxy S8 and S8+.
The back and recent buttons are software based as shown above. You can re-order Galaxy S8 navigation buttons.
Home button is embedded into the screen. You can keep it on all the time if you  want.
Sensors,LED and front-facing cameras
The traditional LED indicator, iris recognition LED (for iris recognition camera) and proximity/light sensor are in left side of the speaker/earpiece.
Please refer to this page on how to setup and use iris scanner in Galaxy S8 and S8+.
To the right of the speaker, there are two cameras. One is the front facing camera for taking selfies. The other one is iris recognition camera.

There are two slots in the SIM card tray.
Slot one is for a nano SIM card. The second slot is for micro SD card. For dual SIM version of Galaxy S8 and S8+, the second slot can be used for either micro SD card OR a second nano SIM (but not both).
Please refer to Galaxy S8 SIM card guide for details.
To use SD card in Galaxy S8 and S8+, please refer to this guide.

Please note, Galaxy S8 and S8+ use moisture/humidity sensor to detect moisture in the USB port. If moisture is detected, you will not be able to charge the phone through USB port. You have to use a wireless charging pad to charge the phone.
Please refer to this guide on how to solve Galaxy S8 moisture problem.

Robb Butler says
are there two mics mounted, in order to record HD videos in stereo?
simon says
No stereo audio recording in S8 although there are two mics. Only one mic is used. When in interview mode, two mics may be used for interviewer and interviewee separately.

What is a “hear rate sensor” referenced in your text? Where is it and how do I use it?
simon says
Sorry, it’s heart rate monitor. We will correct the page later.
You can use S Health app to check the heart rate. You can also use it to take selfies.

Please let us know features of mini hole at top right corner at aluminium frame just by the side of which bar mark….
simon says
you probably refer to the secondary mic. You need two mics to do noise cancelling (when making calls). Besides, when you use the voice recorder, it can choose the proper mic for you and the interviewee. It is better illustrated in this page.

Is there a schematic showing the top right Mic connections. One of the comps got knocked off, and lost, during a repair. I think it was a cap to the top mic, but I can’t find the actual component. I have tested this and the top mic is the only thing not working. The mic chip is marked S1811, and it has only a few comps associated with it. Should be an easy fix, if I could get the proper value comp. Lacking that, I’ll just have to try a few caps to see what works. The comp was brown, with solder bands around component on both ends. assume cap of some unknown value.
Any idea what the comp might be? It’s the comp that should be on the pads shown in this photo:

Thanks

Not sure. You can visit local Samsung service center to get the part number. If you have the chance to talk to the engineer, then you can get detailed info. But if you have to go through the registration counter, you can check with the duty manager to see whether you call talk to repair engineer directly.
