How to force Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ to power off  when you cannot unlock the phone?

With Android Nougat update, you may find you are asked to unlock the phone after you tap power off button in Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+.

In other words, Samsung requires you to unlock the phone before you can power off Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+

Sometimes, you may want to bypass this restriction to power off Galaxy S6 without unlocking the phone.

For example,

  • The screen is broken and you cannot use the power off button.
  • You need to power off Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ that are not yours.
  • You want to factory data reset Galaxy S6, S6 edge or S6 edge+ because you forget the PIN/password and you cannot use Samsung’s Find my mobile to unlock Galaxy S7 remotely.

The good news is that you can force Galaxy S6 (S6 edge and S6 edge+) to power off without unlocking the phone.

You just need follow these steps to force Galaxy S6 to power off.

Step 1: Connect Galaxy S6, S6 edge or S6 edge+ to a wall charger with the USB cable and make sure it is charging.

Step 2: Press and hold Volume down button and Power button (holding two buttons)  for about 7 seconds.

Step 3: Release power button, then volume down button.

Now, Galaxy S6, or S6 edge or S6 edge+ should be powered off. You can wake up the screen to verify. It should show a battery icon.

Can you turn on Samsung Galaxy S6, or turn off Samsung Galaxy S6? Do you know how to reboot / restart Samsung Galaxy S6 now?

“Press and hold Volume down button and Power button (holding two buttons) for about 7 seconds.”

This step worked for my phone. It was completely black with a red light and would not power on. I tried this and it asked it I wanted to alter manf. settings. I said cancel/no and the phone powered on.

      I hope this helps.

Most often, the firmware hits a bug.

Under rare cases, it is caused by some hardware problems. If it happens often, you may have to visit service center to change some components.

My S6 Edge will not turn on. It was fully charged, used it for a few minutes, put it down for 10 minutes and then won’t turn on. I tried the 3 button reboot, nothing happens. Plugged into charger and no lights come on.

Press and hold volume up (or volume down, not both) for a few seconds, without release volumembutton, the then press and hold power button.

Anyway, if the led is not on when the phone is connected to the charger, you probably have to visit local Samsung service centre.

Very likely, you turned on several accessibility settings.

You can try to triple-tap any items (i.e, tap any items in 3 times).

You can always reboot the phone by pressing and hold power button. But the settings are persistent.

If you still cannot turn off the corresponding settings, you may visit local Samsung service center. They can easily disable the settings for you.

I tried all the buttons that you explained above without plug in to a charger and nothing work out, then I plugged it to the charger and tried the same steps again ( volume down + power button + home screen button) showed me a light blue screen saying: warning downloading the OC customer system causing a problem if you want to cancel the download press the down volume button or press the upper volume to continue. I tried to press only the down volume arrow to cancel it, but nothing happened and the screen turn off again.

What you got is the download mode. Normally, if it can enter download mode, you can also enter recovery mode (volume up +home +power buttons).

I have Samsung g6 and the screen has just turned off n won’t turn back on a few times.it was on 75% battery life one time when this happened.all I did was wake up n wanted to check the time n noticed the screen won’t turn on no matter which way I tried to wake the screen up.I tried to charge it and the red led light indicator didn’t pop up.I have a s5 also and I’ve neevever had that kind of issue with it.so I left the SamG6 on my dresser for abt two days.during those days I checked again n no luck.after like day 3 I tried the side button again and the battery icon popped up n went away. I quickly grabbed the charger n plugged it up.the red led light came on n showed the battery icon that it was charging.I let it charge for a few n tried to turn it on and it DID turn on.Today it happened again. phone went to black screen screen n the blue led light indicator started blinking.tried to charge it.still nothing. I Google n came to this forum. I read and saw a post about step 4 working for them.so I tried it and it worked for me as well. I called samsung n the phone service am with when I had these issues.couldn’t fix it over the phone and wanted me to send it to get it checked out. Phone is back on and working so not sending it in just yet . Hope it doesn’t happen again but who knows.if it does am Goin to send it back to the manufacturer and hope they fix it or send me a new one. I hope one of the steps works for anyone having issues like this.

      is the phone hot?

If not, you can connect it to the charger for 1 hour or until the the light turns blue (if it does), disconnect the charger, let the battery cool down. Then try again.

Of course, if you still cannot turn it on, you have to visit Samsung service center to check the phone.

I was doing a reset to my galaxy s6 as it was moving a bit slowly. I restarted it via the power button menu while the phone was on but it never restarted. The blue light is flashing.. or pulsing rather. I tried all the steps above and do get a result which gives me options: normal reboot, factory reset, safe mode, power off, and debug via usb. I have tried everything but factory reset and I get the Samsung power on screen but nothing else. It just goes back to a pulsing blue light. I really, REALLY do not want to do a factory reset. I gave up a phone with the SD card and a battery for this as I was assured they were no longer needed but the SD card was great for backing up and the battery was good for fixing this problem.

Any thoughts? Am I missing something?

    Thanks!

If you stopped the factory data reset process by rebooting the phone, you probably have no option but to do the factory reset again.

Factory data reset normally should take less than 10 mins.

If you visit Samsung service center, they will also have to reset the S6.

Contacted Samsung and Verizon. Samsung wanted me to send in for repair. Verizon tried to save the data in any way they could. They were both baffled as to why the blue light is on. I have tried all methods including factory reset twice and the blue light never turns off. Taking it in to get it flashed by Samsung. Verizon stated they just received a bulletin of this happening today.

No Problem, took in to Samsung rep at Best Buy. Tried Firmware reinstall. It installed and went to update and it timed out. When restart it goes back to a blue light of doom with same results as before. The Samsung guy was baffled as to why the blue light was on since it is a notification light. It is definitely powered on too as it drains the battery to the point of shutoff. Just unresponsive. I suspect hardware failure.

Last attempt before sending it in to Samsung and being without a phone for a couple weeks is to go into Verizon store where I got it. Verizon rep said that they are seeing this with other phones now hence the bulletin they received.

I hope no one else comes across this because it is frustrating not being able to do anything to fix it. I appreciate the help and tips. Remember, do not head towards the pulsing blue light!

Thank you so much for writing this. Operation number 5 on Step 3 worked for me. My phone just shut off by itself without warning. I was on amazon for a few minutes and after I got out of amazon I just kept the phone in my hand and did not bother to look at it for about 3 minutes since I was talking to someone, so when I tried to see the time I found that it was off and would not turn on or react to anything I did, even when I connected it to the charger the LED light would not come on. I have to admit I was quite scared. So I checked online to find out what I could do to fix it without caling or sending it back to T-mobile, and this article helped. Now I’ll just be keeping a close eye on it for a few days to make sure it does not happen again.

It is probably a bug in hardware driver. If it happens often, it could be a hardware issue and then probably replacement of some parts may be required.

I just got my Samsung Galaxy s6 yesterday, the battery was full. I let the phone sit on the couch while I watched TV, I wanted to see what time it was and the screen was all black. I tried charging it because everyone thought it had no battery, but nothing popped up, not even the red light. I changed outlet, and everything but nothing worked. I tried all the steps, including number 4 since it was the one working perfectly for everyone else, but I got no results. Any clues on what I should do? I’m a bit freaked out. So, any help would be useful.

Hi All, I had the same problem, the phone just switched off and the red light was on. I remembered my old phone if I reset the battery, that used to fix it and the phone would work normally again. Since the S6 does not have that option, I let the battery drain out and once the phone is dead, just reconnect the chrger cable and start normally. It starts and works as if nothing happened. You do not loose any data. Try this method for your phone.
    Cheers!

Greetings my s6 edge screen just went dark after a phone call. the touch and everything works. I can receive calls. I know how to pick calls since I just have to swipe at the bottom so I know the touch works and everything works. I get notification tones too. I tried to shut it off and maybe start it again but I don’t know how to do it since i’ll have to confirm by tapping the screen which I cant see anything on. I have done the volume keys and home key tricks. phone restarts perfectly but with a blank / black screen like before. it was hot but now cool. screen is still off. I left to charge earlier before the fateful call so I don’t know if maybe its over charged. but it seems everything is working but I cant see anything on my screen. its as if the phone has been switched off screen wise.

Volume up, down and the power button got me to the Samsung logo, the way it looks when you normally turn on the phone. But the logo doesn’t go away, I can’t get the phone turned on all the way, only the logo screen. Has anyone else experienced that? What can I do to fix it?

What do to get after the logo? If you hold power button again, what happens?

Anyway, if none of the key combinations work can turn on Galaxy S6, you may have to visit local Samsung service centre to check hardware.

If Galaxy S6 doesn’t respond to any of the key combinations mentioned in this guide, very likely there are some problems with the hardware. You may have to visit Samsung service center to check and repair.

Ok well I really did a number on my Galaxy S6. I got a virus from a corrupt app. turns out its Malware. Well it has been causing consistent pop-ups . so I went online and and watched a video on how to remove it…First Mistake …..in the video it was talking about rooting your phone and then using software to fix the problem….second mistake …..it said that I needed to to turn my developer on… so I did that….Third mistake…….then after 3 min or so the guy says do not do this if u have AT&T…….well so I stopped and set my phone down………went researching more and decided I was just going to do a factory reset…..heres my fourth mistake…..I forgot to turn the developer back to it normal state…..So when I went to reset my phone Its saying ” DOWNLOADING do not turn off target”……. Well now it wont do anything including turning off……no matter what button i hold for any length of time nothing happens……HEEEELP

It seems you are just in download mode (you pressed volume down + Home + power, but it should be volume up + home+ power, for recovery mode), . You should be able to press and hold power button to force it to exit.

Anyway, get apps from reliable sources only.

    Hey.

I recently bought Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. And i also bought their only one type of cover as protection for my telephone.

And my main issue is that i am watching youtube for music, and it turns off then my cover are closing. When it does i get like 10 sec’s or so until my telephone goes into sleeping mode.

Is there anyway to remove or turn off this? I am so sick of this. I bought this telephone for one reason. Music and videos. But it won’t allow me and i am about to rage on it.

If any one know how to solve this i would be greatfull, because this is unberable. I have to flip the cover at the oposite side, and by doing that it makes my touch screen less protected. 🙁

This is normal for default YouTube app. When you watch videos on YouTube, the app should stop if the screen is off. For the s7 case, when you close it, it should turn off the screen.

One solution is to use Firefox browser to visit YouTube site and request desktop version. You can then play YouTube videos on background even when the screen is off.

Another solution is through YouTube Red subscription. It’s not free and not available in most countries. With YouTube Red subscription, you can set player is always on. You also can access videos when offline.

It is better to check the phone earlier in the service center to avoid more damages.

if the screen does not work, you probably have to wait until the battery drain completely.

Don’t try to turn on the phone when battery is drained completely.

You may try it with other cable/charger.

It could be due to hardware problem with the USB port or the board. You should visit local Samsung service center to check the hardware if you still cannot charge with other cables/charger.

My S6 was going fine but Google Play Services message kept coming up saying that it had stopped working. I pressed the OK button like I have in the past but the message kept coming up over and over so I thought I would do a restart and now I have a black screen with SAMSUNG on it flashing a little bit and a blue light and nothing happening. My phone automatically upgraded about 3 days ago for the latest updates. Are you able to help at all please?

Thank You! This article saved my Verizon Samsung S6. Black Screen, blue LED blinking, fully charged, but no response at all. I followed the above steps (1-3) with no success. Finally following the RED step 4, my phone sprung into action. Very fine print appeared giving me the choice of several start up options. Be careful which you choose, as some erases all data. I chose the first option which started the phone normally and it seems to be working fine now.
Thankful I still have a computer on which I found this helpful article.

I had the dreaded black screen and pulsing blue light. I tried everyour button combination over and over again and nothing was working. Then as a last ditch desperate measure I called my phone from my daughter’s phone. It went to voicemail of course. Then when I pressed the power button on my phone it turned on normally and is working fine!

My phone screen has been doing the same thing for the past 3 days. It happens at night. I send a message or while I’m listening to music i will turn off the screen I guess I’m doing something wrong or an app is running or something because when I turn off the screen it will not turn back on . I’ve booted it into safe mode before and deleted a third party remote app which is the only third part app I had. And I noticed that when the screen would finally turn on from me restarting the phone a pop up would appear saying real racing 3 (a game I downloaded) has stopped running so I thought that as part of the problem so I deleted that also. It happened again last night when I sent a message to my girlfriend and turn the screen of while I put the phone in my pocket so I it had something to do with the front camera or accessibility settings so I figured it would be best to just factory reset it when the screen started working again. But this morning I woke up and the phone screen was still black with blinking led lights and I’ve tried every tip on this list and nothing has helped yet. I don’t know if I’m doing it right or what? I can’t access any pop ups that happens from pressing the buttons simply because my screen is still black. Maybe you could try walking me through it? Idk what to do anymore. Step 4 has saved everyone’s life’s but mine 🙁

It’s better to send the phone to the service center to check the hardware. It could be due to some problems in mainboard.

Of course, you can try to connect a charger to the phone to see whether it helps.

When you can get the screen on, you can try to test the screen and sensors by dialing

My daughter’s phone went to a completely black screen- wouldn’t power up even after charging it for hours. we went through the steps & at step number 3…Even before I finished reading step 4. She says “this isn’t going to work”. Then,I read where it says that most members stop at step 3; she says “whatever”… so we go through step4 & next thing I know I hear her say “oh my goodness! it freakin’ worked!” Lol…again thank you very much for your brain power!

It can be caused by apps installed or updated recently.

You can try to clear cache partition to see whether it helps.

If clearing cache partition doesn’t help, you can try to back up the phone, then try a factory data reset.

Here is the guide for clearing cache partition: https://gadgetguideonline.com/galaxys6/samsung-galaxy-s6-guides/how-to-boot-into-galaxy-s6-recovery-mode/

This is normal because the power on sound is silent in Samsung devices with Marshmallow. You cannot change it unless you root the phone.
