What is Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen?
Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen is the starting point for accessing all features in Galaxy S6 (or Galaxy S6 edge). Once Galaxy S6 is rebooted (and unlocked), the first page you encounter is the home panel of home screen (as shown below).
You can always reach Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen (and the home panel) by pressing the Home button.
Please note Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge share the identical home screen. This guide also applies to Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, although in the text, I use Galaxy S6.
Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen displays:
- widgets;
- shortcuts to apps (so that you can access these apps quickly);
- app folders (for your to manage and group apps without using excessive home screen panels);
- screen indicators (indicating the location of current panel/page among all home screen panels);
- favorite apps (which will show on all panels of Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen. You can put most frequently used apps here to use Galaxy S6 effectively);
- apps screen icon (link to Apps screen)
By default, Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen consists of several pages (called panels). To view other panels of Galaxy S6 home screen, swipe to the left or right, or tap one of the screen indicators at the bottom of the screen as shown below.
Please note, Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen does NOT support cycling through home screen panels. In other words, there is a start and a end of home screen panels when you swipe the home panels in one direction. In old Samsung Galaxy devices, for example in Samsung Galaxy S5, when you reach the right most panel, next panel will be the leftmost panel. This feature was removed in Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen.

If you have several home panels, is there a quick way to jump to a specific panel instead having to swipe through them all to get to the one you want? I have the S6 edge.
simon says
Yes, just above the fav tray, there are dots to indicate corresponding pages (indicated as screen indicators in the first picture). When you add more home panels, the number of dots will increase accordingly. Tap the dot to jump to corresponding home screen panels.
The icons for home and briefing are different from others.

Thanks for your reply. Selecting and tapping a particular dot would indeed allow me to jump to the corresponding home screen panel on my S4, but I’m not getting that to happen on my S6 edge. Tapping on any dot only advances one screen at a time, the same action as swiping. I thought it was strange that Samsung would remove that feature. Has any other Verizon S6/S6 edge owners mentioned this?
simon says
You are right. It seems I cannot jump to the desired home screen panel directly except home panel (with home button) on s6.

I agree. This needs to be fixed, along with restoring the ability to jump directly to any panel by selecting the corresponding dot. What is the point of the dots if you can’t do this?
It is most unfortunate that with every “new and improved” model, feature, or fix, something else that worked just fine before, either gets removed, overlooked, or made more complicated. I’ve only had my S6 for a few weeks, but I already have a long list of issues and complaints. Do they not seek input from existing users? If they do, I wish to participate!!

Hi I bought a Samsung galaxy s 6 in the UK a couple of days ago. The version that’s on the phone is 5.1.1. The error that I have is that location isn’t appearing on the indicator screen at the top of the screen when I activate it. Samsung said I needed to backup and reset the phone which I have done but nothing haschanged. I don’t want to have to reset again if I can help it. I was then told that it only appears when you are using an app that requires location.why doesn’t it just appear when I have activists it so I know whether it’s on or not? Can you advise. Thanks.
simon says
This is normal. The icon is shown only location service is actively used, in most regions. In some regions, it’s shown only when the phone is searching GPS.
So, it’s normal as I know of you cannot see it after enabling location services.

I loaded the new Android update last week on my Galaxy 6s and now my Home Screen and all the other pages are blank. I have the Apps icon at the bottom and I can go into apps but all my shortcuts disappeared on my home screen including the weather, time and google search bar all with them. I can pinch the home screen and it takes me to the place where you can pick widgets and themes but I cannot drag any of my Apps icon from the Apps screen. The only way to see my home screen again is but switching to easy mode but then I have the extra large display which I find hard to use. What can I do here?
simon says
In apps screen, if you tap and hold an app icon, what happens?

Is it possible to remove the screen indicators?
simon says
No, you cannot remove the dots for the screen indicators. Any reasons for removing them? Some third-party launchers don’t have them.

Frustrating Icons says
How do I lock the icons in place on my home screens? They frequently move by themselves.
I never had this problem with my HTC or LG devices and my husband gets tired of rebuilding my home screens. It never happens on his S6 and he hasn’t had to do anything to lock them.
Please do not suggest other launchers, thank you.
simon says
Unfortunately, there are no solutions as I know. The icons moved because the screen was touched accidentally.
This is very common on phones with small bezels. It can be very frustrating for S7 edge owners.
If you enabled smart lock, you may disable it if you want to lower the chance of accidental touch. Also, lock the screen manually with power button before putting the phone into pocket.

My home screen icons are not looking the default way, but there are oval little squares around them. For example, my apps screen icon doesnt only consists from the regular 16 little squares, but it has a grey background as well. What should I do?
simon says
It seems the phone was updated to Nougat. There are many visual changes in Nougat update.

Bekah says
How do you move the actual apps on the panels?
simon says
Tap and hold the app, then move it to any location. If you move across the right boarder or left boarder, you can move the app to a new panel.
If you updated the phone to Nougat, once you tap and hold an app, you can find the move apps option in the top. You can then navigated to the new panel, then drag the app down to desired location. This is easier than the first
Did I misunderstand your question?

I just bought this s6, (refurbished) and it said update available. I ran it, it went thru the whole thing then went back to update available. Over and over. BUT, on one time thru it did change the look of my icons and my drop down menu. I hate it. Anything I can do? Besides, my old droid ultra had way better service. Very disappointed.
simon says
When it prompts update, it should tell you what the update is. Anyway, you should update your phone.

(Sorry if I repeat this question) How do I get rid of and replace the Apps Folder icon at the bottom of the screen, next to (what you call) “Favorites? (It’s in the same configuration as the screenshot above.) Nothing happens when I hold it, I can’t drag it off. Thank you!
simon says
You can move apps out of the favourite tray to make it empty (if you hide apps screen icon). But you cannot remove the favourite try. It’s part (place holder) of the home screen in Samsung launcher.

On my S6, I would like to add a Chrome icon. It’s not in my app drawer but it is installed and I have to hunt for it. How do I get it to appear on my homescreen or app drawer. Thank you.
simon says
Did you disable it? You can enable it in Settings – apps. You can find Chrome there. Tap it, then you can choose to enable it.

There is a ringtone in my Galaxy S6 that I want to copy over to my S9. It is not available in S9. Is there a way that I can locate the ringtone file in S6 so I can copy it and install it in S9. I have searched through all the files in S6, including the Ringtone file, with no success. I have installed ES File Explorer as you explained above and still unable to locate where the S6 default ringtones are stored either as mp3 files or files in some other format that could be copied. Please help. Thanks.
simon says
DO you mean the stock S6 ringtone?

The home icon is over what is the third panel (first is a news panel that was just there (in other words I didn’t do anything to create it); second panel is the one I would like as home page). I want to make a different panel the home page. Is there a way to move the home icon to another panel?
simon says
All your questions were already answered in the page.
To see the home icon, you can “on Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen, tap and hold an empty area, or pinch your fingers together to access the available options as shown below.”
“To set a panel as the main home screen (home of home screen), tap the Home icon in the screen indicators.”
