Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge also enabled Galaxy S7 blue light filter, which makes night reading more comfortable.
Actually, the recalled and now deceased Galaxy Note 7 actually already got blue light filter. Google also introduced a similar feature in Pixel and Pixel XL phones.
Blue light is not a new thing. It is part of the visible light from day one.
But in recent years, there are growing concerns on the impact of blue night on our eyes due to the prolonged use of LED devices, which usually are considered as a major source of blue light in modern age.
Although it is still arguable whether blue light from smartphones and other LED devices may cause any eye health issues, we all can feel it is more comfortable in night reading if blue light is partially filtered.
Galaxy S7 blue light filter allows you to filter some blue light to reduce the strain of your eyes, especially in dark or low-night environment.
Of course, you should never consider blue light filter as an excuse to use the phone excessively. It is more or less for comfort.
You can quickly turn on and turn off Galaxy S7 blue light filter at any time with one tap.
In Galaxy S7 quick setting buttons, you can find blue light filter button as shown below.
You can tap the button to turn on it immediately if the filter is off now; turn off the filter if it is currently one
If you need to use blue light filter frequently, you may relocate the button to one of the first 6 spots as explained in this guide if your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge was updated to Android Nougat 7.0.
If your phone is still on Android Marshmallow 6.0, you may check this guide on how to customize the quick setting buttons.
Similar to other Galaxy S7 quick setting buttons in Android Nougat 7.0, if you tap and hold (i.e, long tap) the blue light filter button, you will be directed to the corresponding settings page as discussed later.
Another way to enable or disable blue light filter in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is from phone settings.… Read the rest

Sometimes, what you see on the preview screen may be different from what you taken with Galaxy S7 camera.
This is not uncommon.
For example, you may move your hands when press the shutter button (or using voice control, or using volume button, or using other methods to take photos). At the end of the day, you may find you saved a blurry photo. The OIS in Galaxy S7 camera and Galaxy S7 edge camera may help you avoid some of such photos, but it may not avoid such photos in many cases.
Also, when your hand moves, the auto focus may change the focus unintentionally.
Anyway, if the photo is important, you should review it immediately.
There are two ways to review photos immediately after they are taken:
This Galaxy S7 camera guide will show you how to review photos taken with Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge before they are saved.
By default, in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, after photo is taken, it is saved to the phone storage or SD card immediately.
If you want to review photos before saving to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, you need to enable this feature.
You need to start Galaxy S7 Camera app.
In Galaxy S7 camera preview screen, tap Settings icon as shown below.
Now in Camera settings page, as shown in the screenshot below, you can enable “review pictures“.
Please note, Review pictures setting is shared by front and rear camera. In other words, it does not matter which camera is active when you change the setting.
After enabling Review pictures, you now will be prompt with the photo after taken it and you have the option to save it or discard it.
In addition to enabling/disabling photo review in the camera app, you can also do it in Galaxy S7 settings.… Read the rest

When you get your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, you can find there are some apps pre-installed (in both home screen and apps screen) before you start to install your own apps.
Like in other Android phones, the pre-installed apps in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge can be classified into 3 categories:
For any of these pre-installed apps, you cannot uninstall them without rooting Galaxy S7 or S7 edge.
If you do not want to use these apps, you may disable (turn off) some of these apps if they are not essential.
Please note, you cannot move any of the pre-installed apps to micro SD card in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.
For apps installed by you, you can uninstall them from Galaxy S7 or S7 edge at any timewithout any issues.
But for pre-installed apps, you can only disable such apps. You cannot “uninstall” them.
The difference between “uninstall” and “disable” (turn off) is that when you disable apps in Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, these apps still occupy your internal storage.
Of course app data are removed. But the files for the app are still in the internal storage.
So, disabling apps in Galaxy S7 essentially prevent them from starting. You cannot fully claim back the storage used by such apps.
When you uninstall apps in Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, they are removed from the phone. Both app files and app data are removed and therefore you can claim back the storage.… Read the rest

When you got the new phone before you do anything on it, you can call it in factory state.
Factory reset Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge means you wipe all your data, settings and apps from the phone. All your traces on the phone will be removed (with a few exceptions, read on).
After factory reset Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, you have to setup the phone just like a new phone before you can use it.
In all Android devices, there is an option for you to perform factory reset. Sometimes, factory reset is named as factory data reset because only user data are actually removed.
You need factory reset Galaxy S7 or S7 edge:
Since Android Lollipop 5.1, an anti-theft feature of factory data reset (FDR) protection has been introduced. After a factory reset, to re-activate the device, you have to provide a Google account that existed on the phone before it is reset.
Samsung fully implemented this device protection feature in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
This means that unless you turn off factory data reset protection before you factory reset Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, you will have to use the Google account that existed before you reset it to re-activate the phone.
This can be problematic if Galaxy S7 will change hands after factory reset.
So, in such cases, you should turn off factory data reset protection by:

Galaxy S7 camera (and Galaxy S7 edge camera) is good for taking selfies. And Samsung allows you to use your voice, gesture, or heart rate monitor to take selfie in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
This Galaxy S7 camera guide will show you how to use 5 different shooting methods to take selfie.
When you start camera app, by default, the rear camera is active.
Although you can take selfie with rear camera, most Galaxy S7 owners prefer front camera for selfies because you can preview the selfie when using front camera.
To switch to front camera, as explained in Galaxy S7 camera preview screen page, you can tap the switch button as shown below (marked as 1).
If front camera is active, you can use the same button to switch to rear camera.
By default, selfie mode is active after switching to front camera. You can find the selfie mode icon as shown in the screenshot below (marked as 2). You can change the settings for selfie mode by tapping this icon.
To take selfie, you can just tap the camera shutter button.
But it is usually inconvenient to tap the camera button when taking selfies. So, you may want to use other shooting methods to take selfie.
To manage different shooting methods to take selfie in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, tap the settings button as shown below (marked as 3).
In camera settings page as shown above, tap Shooting methods (front) to manage shooting methods for the front camera.
If you have the option of Shooting methods (rear), it means the rear camera is active. You need to switch to front camera.
As shown in the screenshot below, in addition to tapping the shutter button, there are 4 additional shooting methods to take selfie on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
You can turn on or turn off them individually by tapping the corresponding switch as shown below.
In total, there are 5 shooting methods for the front camera in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Galaxy S7 wallpapers are just background images in Galaxy S7 home screen, apps screen and lock screen.
And it is the easiest part when you want to customize your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge. You can simply use your photo or your dog’s photo to make the phone “yours”.
But you should not overdo it.
Because app icons are overlaid on Galaxy S7 wallpapers, you may try to choose wallpapers so that it should not be difficult to see the app icons.
Some Galaxy S7 owners may prefer dark wallpapers to save battery because of the Super AMOLED display in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. But do not expect too much.
Anyway, choose Galaxy S7 wallpapers you like so that you can enjoy your phone. Don’t think too much on battery consumption: the difference is very marginal.
However, some poor designed live wallpapers may drain battery in Galaxy S7 or S7 edge noticeably.
So, you need to check battery usage by live wallpapers only.
You can set Galaxy S7 wallpapers for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge by following these steps.
In Galaxy S7 home screen ,you can tap and hold (aka “long tap”) any empty area to enter edit mode of Galaxy S7 home screen (aka, access Galaxy S7 home screen options) as shown below.
You can also enter home screen edit mode through pinching to zoom in in the home screen.
In the Galaxy S7 home screen edit mode (aka home screen options), tap Wallpapers as shown below to customize Galaxy S7 wallpapers.
By default, the wallpaper setting is for Galaxy S7 home screen.
The preview of home panel of Galaxy S7 home screen is shown (marked in green box in the screenshot above).
Tap Home screen as shown above.
Now you have 3 options:
These options let you choose which screen(s) you want to apply the wallpaper.
For example, you want to use the same wallpapers for Galaxy S7 home screen and lock screen.

Notification reminder in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge reminds you until you check or read the notifications. This is important if you tend to ignore important notifications.
Samsung introduced this feature long time ago in their TouchWiz skin.
But in older versions of Galaxy phones prior to Galaxy S6, you can only turn on or turn off notification reminder for all apps. In the refreshed TouchWiz since Galaxy S6, you now can select important apps to be used in notification reminder.
So, you may find notification reminder in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge is very useful now.
Please note, notification reminder in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge is not a standard Android feature. It is a feature added by Samsung. Other Android vendors may or may not have similar features.
By default, Galaxy S7 notification reminder is disabled.
To use this feature, you have to manually turn on/enable it.
You may follow these steps to enable and configure notification reminder in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.
You can enter Galaxy S7 settings in many different ways:
The result is identical.
In Setting page, tap Accessibility.
I am not sure why Samsung branded notification reminder as an accessibility feature in the new TouchWiz.
In Accessibility page, as shown below, you can find Notification reminder.
By default, this feature is turned off in Galaxy S7 ans S7 edge.
Tap Notification reminder as shown below.
Now, in the Notification reminder page, you can enable or disable it.
To enable it, tap the switch (marked as 1 in the screenshot) as shown above.
You can also drag the switch to right side to enable it. In Galaxy S7 and S7 edge settings, dragging and tapping are identical for these switches.
After you enable notification reminder, you will have 4 more options to configure.
If enabled, in addition to normal notification tone, Galaxy S7 or S7 will also vibrate when the phone bugs you for unread notifications.… Read the rest

Cache partition is a special and separated region in the storage where Android saves frequently accessed data and app (including system apps) components in a special format.
The main purpose of cache partition in Android is to make the system “faster” by serving data and files in a special format from a specific location.
But occasionally, cache partition may becomes a problem in performance or system stability and you may want to wipe cache partition on Galaxy S7 or S7 edge.
For example, you may consider to wipe cache partition on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge:
Although it is simple to wipe cache partition on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, you may seek assistance in Samsung service center if you are not comfortable to do it by yourself.
As cache partition is separated from your data and files in the storage, it is safe for your data and settings when you wipe cache partition on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

With Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung also updated their camera app.
Again, this update brought some confusions among many owners. It seems Samsung lacks a clear roadmap for their apps.
This page was prepared to help owners of Galaxy S7 and S7 edge who have questions on using Galaxy S7 camera app with Android Nougat update. If your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge is still running Android Marshmallow, please check this guide.
First, here is the list of major changes in Galaxy S7 camera app with Android Nougat update:
Please note, the changes are more or less on usability only. There are no changes in features of the Galaxy S7 camera and Galaxy S7 edge camera.
The new preview screen of Galaxy S7 camera app with Android Nougat update looks cleaner. The old preview screen under Marshmallow can be found here.
But if you are a seasoned Samsung phone user, you may find it is confusing.
As shown below, the new preview screen of Galaxy S7 camera app with Android Nougat update have 8 functional parts (the numbers are corresponding to those shown in the screenshot below):
1. Take a photo.
You need tap it to take the picture.
Please note, Samsung camera app does not support tap to take photos by default (you need manually enable it for front camera). But if it is not convenient for you to tap this button, you can use many other ways to take a photo in Galaxy S7 and S7 edge including:

Samsung tried hard to make sure that Galaxy S7 camera is simple to use. You can launch the camera app quickly thorough quick launch. You also get a very clean Galaxy S7 camera app interface (preview screen).
For most Galaxy S7 or S7 edge owners, what you need do is to point and tap the shutter button.
But some times, some settings cannot be done in the Galaxy S7 camera preview screen. It is simply impossible to squeeze all settings into the preview screen.
So, for some settings, you have to set them in Samsung Galaxy S7 camera settings page.
Samsung Galaxy S7 camera settings for rear camera are slightly different from those for front camera. This guide will try to cover both rear (main) camera settings and front (front-facing, secondary) camera settings.
You can access Samsung Galaxy S7 camera settings for rear camera by:
You will get Samsung Galaxy S7 camera settings for rear camera as shown below.

Update 1, added section: Limitations of Galaxy S7 always-on display.
One of the best features in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is the always-on display.
This post tries to explain to you what Galaxy S7 always-on display (AOD) is and how to configure and use Galaxy S7 always-on display in Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
Please note Galaxy S7 always-on display is available in both Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. In the post, I will just refer them as Galaxy S7.
Very often, we check our smartphones just for time or for notifications. In this situations, we may have no intention to unlock the phone and use it.
But to check time or notification on Galaxy S7 lock screen, we must wake up (turn on) the display by pressing power button or home button (see this page for Galaxy Sy7 layout of buttons).
Now, Galaxy S7 always-on display, if enabled, can display clock, notifications and a image all the time except when Galaxy S7 is in your pocket.
It is a cool feature for some Galaxy S7 owners.
The super AMOLED display in Galaxy S7 does not drain battery significantly if you choose black background.
The Galaxy S7 always-on display is different from Galaxy S7 lock screen. Galaxy S7 always-on display will disappear automatically when you wake up the screen.
In other words, you get the lock screen when you wake up the phone. Galaxy S7 always-on display is activated only after screen is timed out and phone is locked.

Android Nougat udpate for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge allows you to adjust the screen zoom levels so that you can adjust size of both icons and text.
In Android Nougat, Google introduced a feature named display size (aka display scaling).
Prior to Android Nougat, you can only set font size to adjust the size of text. You cannot adjust the size of icons.
Also the size of some texts, for example, lock screen keypad/keyboard, notification messages, and menu items in some apps, is fixed.
In other words, changing font size will not change these text.
This is the reason why Android Nougat brought this new setting so that you can further customize the interface of Android.
Luckily, Samsung did not remove this feature in Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
But Samsung, as usual, wants to confuse other non-Samsung users with a new name: screen zoom.
So, screen zoom in Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge equals to display size (or display scaling) in other Android Nougat devices.
As mentioned above, screen zoom is different from font size. Actually, it solves the problem that font size cannot handle.
Font size only can affect the size of “adjustable” text.
But unfortunately, size of some texts in Android is not adjustable through font size, including, notifications, lock screen text.
For example, a lot of users complained about the size of the keypad in the lock screen, or the size of notification text.
In addition, some apps may also do not allow you to use font size settings to overwrite its default settings.
Screen zoom works with all text and icons. It works just like you zoom in to the screen.
So, the major different between screen zoom and font sizer in Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge include:
You can use screen zoom together to get desired display.
If you need further customization, in addition to font size and screen zoom, you may try Galaxy S7 themes.… Read the rest

As discussed in this page, the selection of Galaxy S7 camera mode is not persistent.
When you start Galaxy S7 camera app after you close the app, the camera mode will be default to Auto mode (for rear camera) or selfie mode (for front camera).
This can be very annoying if you want to use some Galaxy S7 camera modes very often. You may want Galaxy S7 or S7 edge to “remember” your selection.
Currently, there is no option for Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge to remember the last camera mode used.
But Samsung does provide a new feature in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge to solve your problem: you can add Galaxy S7 camera mode shortcut to Home screen.
This means for any of the camera modes (including the pre-installed camera modes, and Galaxy S7 camera modes downloaded and installed by you), you can add a shortcut in Galaxy S7 Home screen. If you tap the shortcut icon in Galaxy S7 home screen, it will start camera app, and at the same time switch to the corresponding mode.
For example, if you use Pro mode very often, you can add it to Home screen. You can then use this shortcut to directly launch camera app in Pro mode.
Of course, you can still use the default camera app icon and other methods to launch Galaxy S7 camera in Auto mode.
Isn’t a good solution?
Even better:
Although Galaxy S7 camera does not save the camera mode used, it does remember which camera was used last time.
When you start camera app, it always use the camera you used before closing the app (until you reboot the phone).
This is convenient for some Galaxy S7 owners.
But this can also be a problem.
Sometimes, when you want to take a selfie, you may find rear camera is active. You have to fiddle around and manually switch to front-facing camera.
Now, the Galaxy S7 camera mode shortcut can solve this problem.
You can add a shortcut for Selfie mode or Wide selfie mode to Galaxy S7 home screen.
You can then use this Galaxy S7 camera mode shortcut to launch front-facing camera in selfie mode or wide-selfie mode directly.… Read the rest

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 have only 4 hardware buttons (hardware keys) as shown in Galaxy S7 layout and Galaxy S7 edge layout page:
In addition, Galaxy S7 has 2 capacitive buttons:
So, in total, there are 6 Galaxy S7 buttons for you to use to control Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
This guide will explain to you the functions of these 6 Galaxy S7 buttons and Galaxy S7 edge buttons. In addition, functions of combination of Galaxy S7 buttons are also explained so that you can use Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge effectively.
Galaxy S7 buttons are identical to Galaxy S7 edge buttons. The functions are also identical.
So, in this page, although only Galaxy S7 buttons are mentioned most of the time, this guide applies equally to Galaxy S7 edge buttons.
Galaxy Home button is a combination of hardware button and fingerprint sensor. Please check this guide (coming soon) on how to use fingerprint on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
The Galaxy S7 Home button has different functions depending on the state of Galaxy S7, and the way you press the button.

Update: Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge will prevent you from powering the phone before you unlock the phone. You can bypass this restriction by power off Galaxy S7 and S7 edge without unlocking the phone.
When you get a new phone, the first thing you will do is probably power it on (i.e. turn on).
Galaxy S7 (or Galaxy S7 edge) is not an exception. In most regions, Samsung does not offer 1-to-1 exchange. You have to check the phone before leaving the counter; otherwise, any problems will probably be handled through service centers.
Any kids can turn on Galaxy S7 or turn off Galaxy S7 because the power button is there.
But if Galaxy S7 does not respond to holding power button, or any buttons in Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, what can you do?
Remember, the battery in Galaxy S7 (and S7 edge) is non-removable for users. You cannot pull out the battery and insert it again.
This guide will try to show you how to turn on Galaxy S7 and turn off Galaxy S7 in all situations, including when the phone does not respond to any buttons.
When Samsung first changed design slimmed down TouchWiz for Galaxy S6 (and Galaxy S6), there are some reports that the phone is not responsive for no reason. You may read comments in this page to get a better idea on the issue in Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.
Through incremental improvements in Galaxy Note 5, the reported cases of non-responsive Galaxy S7 have significantly decreased.
But occasionally, some Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge owners still encountered the similar issue: Galaxy S7 is not responsive to touch screen gestures and pressing of any buttons.
