Galaxy S24 comes with the performance profile (aka performance mode) option. You can switch to the light performance profile (aka light performance mode or light mode) to extend battery life and reduce the heat generated without affecting the usage or speed for almost all tasks.
This Galaxy S24 how-to guide explains the two performance profiles of Galaxy S24, namely, the standard performance profile and the light performance profile. We will also show you when and how to enable and disable them. The differences between the light performance profile, battery protection, power saving mode, and data saver will also be discussed. Some additional battery-saving tips are also provided.
Performance profiles were actually first introduced in the Android 14 (One UI 6)update for Galaxy S23, S22, S21, and other Galaxy phones. So, you can use the light performance profile (light performance mode) on all Samsung Galaxy devices with Android 14, e.g., Galaxy S24, S23, S22, and S21.

What are the two performance profiles on Galaxy S24, S23, S22, and S21?
On all Galaxy phones and tablets with Android 14 (One UI 6) or later (e.g., One UI 6.1), you can instantly switch between two performance profiles:
- Standard performance profile (the default on Galaxy S24, S23, S22, and S21).
- Light performance profile.
The light performance profile, also referred to as light performance mode or light mode, is a functionality that optimizes heat generation and battery usage by adjusting the processing speed to minimize battery consumption. When the Samsung device (e.g., Galaxy S24, S23, or S22) is operating in light performance mode, it utilizes reduced performance power in comparison to the standard performance mode, while still ensuring smooth performance in internet browsing, social media activity, phone calls, and video playback.
While playing games, the light performance mode is automatically disabled, and the phone will automatically switch to standard performance profile. You can further improve the game performance using the Game Booster. The heat generation and power consumption usually are not a concern for gaming.
In short, if you need to extend the battery life or reduce the heat of the phone while playing videos or browsing the internet, you can switch to the light performance profile.
In One UI 3 (Android 11), One UI 4(Android 12), and One UI 5/One UI 5.1 (Android 13), a similar feature, which works in a reverse way, is called enhanced processing.
How to switch between the light performance profile and the standard performance profile on Galaxy S24, S23, S22, and S21?
By default, all Galaxy devices with One UI 6 (Android 14) are in the standard performance mode. You can switch to the light performance profile (or switch back to the standard profile) with one of the following two methods:
- From Phone settings.
- Use the quick setting button.
Method 1: from phone settings
On Galaxy S24 (or any other Galaxy phone with Android 14/One UI 6), open the Settings app.
On the Settings page, as shown in the screenshot below, tap Device Care.
On the Device Care page, as shown in the screenshot above, you can find the Performance profile field under the Performance category.
By default, it shows the current performance profile. For example, in the screenshot above, the default standard mode is being used.
Tap Performance profile, and you will be on the expanded page for Performance profile, as shown in the screenshot below.
The page also briefly explains the differences between the stand and light performance profiles:
- Standard. Provides the recommended balance between processing speed, battery life, and cooling efficiency.
- Light. Prioritizes battery life and cooling efficiency over processing speed.
It also reminds you that the performance profile does not apply to games. Most gamers actually do not mind the heat or battery life and prefer the performance over others. On Galaxy phones, you can always use Game Booster to tune the performance for games.
To switch to the light performance mode, you can tap the Light field or the selection button in front of the Light, as shown in the screenshot above.
The phone would immediately switch to the light performance mode, as shown in the screenshot below.
Of course, you can switch back to the standard mode in the same way.
As shown in the screenshot above, once the light performance mode is enabled, you should find a new performance mode status icon in the status bar, as shown below.
Do not confuse this performance mode icon with the data saver and power saving mode icons on its right side, as shown in the screenshot below. They all help you save battery (read on).
Method 2: Use the quick setting button
Instead of navigating through the Phone settings, you can also switch between the light and standard performance profiles directly (and quickly)in the quick settings panel.
You can access quick settings in at least two ways:
- Traditional. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen (or status bar if present), or swipe down once with two fingers.
- Quick Setting Instant Access. Swipe down once from the top right part of the status bar. Of course, you need to enable this feature in One UI 6.
You can find the Performance profile button among the quick setting buttons, as shown in the screenshot below.
To switch between the standard and light performance modes, you simply tap this button. When it is enabled, it means the light performance profile is active.
Like other quick setting buttons, you can tap and hold it to access the corresponding setting page for this feature.
If you cannot find this button, which was added by default in most regions, you can manually add it as explained in Add, remove, and relocate quick setting buttons.
What are the differences among the battery saving features: light performance mode, battery protection, power saving, and data saver?
Samsung offers several features to help you save the battery. But they target different aspects of battery in the phone. Here is a summary of the differences among the battery-saving features on Galaxy phones.
- Light performance mode tries to reduce heat generation when the phone is actively used. The result is extended battery life and a cooler phone without a noticeable difference in performance for most apps. So, the light performance mode helps you save battery for active apps.
- Battery Protection ( an expanded version of Protect Battery) tries to minimize battery wear when charging the battery. It can limit the maximum battery level to be charged. It can also help you choose the timing for charging. The result is a healthier battery that can serve you for a few additional years or months. The downside is that it may be run at a lower capacity. In short, Battery Protection reduces the wear of the battery and is not related to battery usage.
- Power saving mode tries to reduce battery usage by limiting background network usage, limiting data syncing for all apps, and limiting location-checking frequencies. The motion smoothness will also be changed to the Standard (up to 60Hz). Super HDR will also be disabled. Besides, it can automatically turn off always on display (AOD), turn off 5G, limit CPU speed up to 70%, decrease brightness by 10%, and turn off Edge panels if you configure them. So, power saving mode helps you extend battery life in all aspects very aggressively.
- Data saver. Data saver actually helps you cut down data usage by preventing apps from using data in the background. So, it is not designed as a power-saving feature. But because more and more apps use data in the background, you will usually find that battery life extends once the data saver is turned on. So, the data saver essentially helps you save battery on background processes.
All these four power-saving features can be used concurrently on Galaxy phones.
Additional battery-saving tips
To reduce power consumption on a Samsung Galaxy device, in addition to the four features discussed earlier, you can also try:
- Lower screen brightness: Lower the screen brightness or enable auto-brightness to reduce power usage.
- Reduce screen timeout: Set a shorter screen timeout (including lock screen timeout)duration to turn off the display quickly when idling.
- Turn off Bluetooth and GPS: Disable Bluetooth and GPS (Location) when not in use to prevent unnecessary power drain.
- Disable unnecessary features: Turn off features like NFC, Always-on display, and vibration feedback if you don't need them.
- Close unused apps: Close apps running in the background that are not in use to free up system resources.
Please note some accessories, e.g., Galaxy S24 Flipsuit Case or Galaxy S View cover, may consume battery, But such consumption is usually negligible.
