Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update guide

What is Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update?

Android Nougat is the latest version of Android released in August 22, 2016.  There are lots of new features and improvements in Android Nougat (both Android 7.0 and Android 7.1).

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge was released with previous version of Android (Android Marshmallow). Samsung invited beta testers for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update in November 2016 to try the unofficial firmware in selected regions.

The beta program stopped by the end of 2016. Now, Samsung is ready to roll out the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 globally.

Since January 2017, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will start to receive the Android Nougat (Android 7.0) udpate gradually. It is expected that by the end of Q1 2017, majority of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge devices will get the Android Nougat update.

Because Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update is a major software udpate, the change is significant.

New features in Android Nougat (Android 7.0) were introduced in the udpate. At the same time, Samsung also tweaked the UI for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The new UI is similar to that of the recalled Galaxy Note 7.

Many owners of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge may find it is hard to use the phone after applying Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update.

Therefore, a series of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update guides has been prepared and released gradually.

Why I haven’t received the Android Nougat update for my Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge?

There are several factors affecting the availability of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Android Nougat update.

First,  like other vendors, Samsung rolled out update in a controlled steps. If there are some issues in the Android Nougat udpate, they have enough time and resources to handle them.

This is the reason why the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be initially rolled out in selected regions only.

Second, all firmware update requires approval from carriers (if the devices are sold through carriers). Some carriers may be slower than others to test and approve the update.

Thirdly, the updating server may be overloaded sometimes. In this case, you may find you cannot get the update.  But this should last only a couple of days.

Anyway, you can check update in Settings– About device. You can enable Download updates automatically so that the phone can automatically download the Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge in the background.

    • After the latest update to my S7 when I am on a call and need to check my schedule I cannot get back to the call.

      • When you leave the phone app without hanging up, you should tap home button, then tap the app. The call should continues. You can use recent button to go back to phone app if you need to input anything.

    • Hi i cant find the automatic update button on my phone and still no any option to update in my s7 edge

      • By default, the phone will check the update automatically when it's connected to WiFi.

Is the phone still on Marshmallow?

    • After the nougat update in my Samsung galaxy s7 edge I m unable to find the feature of sim change alert. Please guide on this

    • If you are going for finest contents like I do, simply go to see
this web page daily since it provides feature contents, thanks

      • the timer was relocated to camera settings. You need tap settings icon to enable or disable it.

yes, it is not convenient because you cannot instantly toggle it on or off in preview screen.

    • I have lost the status bar and notification bar on my home screen. Every other screen still has it. How do I retrieve this for my home screen where I need it the most? I have tried refreshing the cache in recovery mode and I have booted it up in safe mode but the same problem remains. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

      • If you got the same problem in safe mode, you probably have to back up the phone and try a factory data reset.

    • Why take out a feature that was unique to the phone? I updated today and it looks so far good besides the edge color feature. The whole thing. Thats what made the edge the edge. There is still the little blip on the side but even without the color. Nothing pops up from my edge contacts. Beyond dumb. If I could uninstall I would just to have that feature back

    • Whenever I click on one of my notifications, the screen turns blurry and it says "Swipe screen to open".
How do you disable this?? This didn't used to happen! I have a Galaxy s7, please tell me how to disable this!

    • My experience with the Nougat upgade is really pathetic.
I can't go to the home screen by clicking the home button one time now.
It's showing google assistant, even if I press long, same result.
How can I go to the home screen, i don't want to use the back button multiple times for the same result.
      Please give me a solution.

      • You got Google assistant because you pressed the home button too long. You just need press home button once to go back to home button. Long press is for Google assistant.

        • I think you didn't read my comment properly. I said, it's not making any difference, if I press once or long time, in both the cases google assistant is getting launched. Home button is kind of lost now.

          • Hi, have you found any solutions yet? My home button has become like that since the most recent update. Initially when installed nougat it was ok. But now home button is not really a home button. I wanna see if others are experiencing the same problem

          • Did you enable any accessibility settings?

You can try to clear cache partition to see whether it helps.

If not, you can then try to back up the phone and try a factory data reset.

If factory data reset still cannot solve the issue, then it is a hardware issue and you have to visit local Samsung service center to fix it.

    • I downloaded this update a couple months ago and ever since then, my edge lighting no longer works nor am I able to use people edge with any assigned colors. My phone no longer gives any color options either. Is anyone else having this problem or know what to do to fix it? ..wish I had never downloaded it.

    • Peole edge is terrible now, bringing back the colour options, the whole update is bland, top tip find better beta testers next time, can't believe I moved from iPhone to this craps

    • I can't seem to find the option to disable fast charging after the update. Does anyone know if it's somewhere in the settings I might have missed

      • Settings-- device maintenance --Battery, tap menu key (3 vertical dots in top right), tap Advanced settings. You can then disable/enable fast cable charging and fast wireless charging.

    • I used to be able to swipe down on my notifications on the lock screen to see the entire notification, and then if I had already swiped down, I'd just need to click it once and it'd unlock the screen and go to that app.

Now, since 7.0, I have to swipe down to view the whole notification, then when I click it, it adds a new step where the screen blurs and says "Swipe screen to open". Is there a way to NOT have to Swipe screen to open? I'd really like to go right from clicking the expanded notification to its relevant app...

      • What's your lock screen security settings? It sounds normal in Nougat when smart lock is in use.

    • I hate not having my color coded edge notifications. That was a horrible decision to take this away it makes no sense

    • The days in my Google monthly calendar now read, 1 1 1 3 3 2 4 1 2 2 5, etc ever since the newest update a few days ago I can't get my calendar to reflect the proper days of the week. Anyone have way to fix it?

    • Why would you take away the color associated with contacts on the Edge???? That's what made the phone exceptional. This so-called update is the pits. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!!

    • Why did you get rid of the colors for contacts when they called or texted on the S7 edge? That was the best part of the edge! Very disappointed!

    • Since the new firmware update I am no longer able to find the favorites on my contact list why

    • Galaxy S7, with the new update I now have to click on "View All" in order to read all of a text message. This is very annoying, and I want to disable it so that all of the text is shown. How do I do that?

      • I was trying to find an answer to this myself, having already explored all of the annoying options menus. By making things 'easier' the damn android software programmers keep making things more difficult by adding more steps between options. I understand the "view all" function for messages, but they should understand that not everyone wants to use that option and would rather have the whole message available to read along-side other messages.

      • Not sure when you got that option. You can take a screenshot and share it in our Facebook page so that others can see which option you are referring to.

    • My brother got the new update on his s7 edge but i havent on my s7 edge even though we are in the same region?

    • My brother got the new update on his s7 edge but i havent recieved it yet on my s7 edge why so?

      • Probably, different carriers. Did you get the phone from the same supplier? If you get phone from your phone company, it will have a special code with slightly different firmware.

    • Does anyone know how to get the language pack back. All my previous languages on the keyboard are gone. Only have English and Chinese. Any help?

      • Default Samsung keyboard? It depends on regions whether a language is available or not.

Google keyboard (Gboard) has more languages usually.

    • My color coded Edge Screen is gone. the text message screen is bright white and the letter that popped up for my text message that would identify who is texting, example: "J" for Jessica, is no more. this is the worst update I have ever got. I don't see where it improved anywhere. can any of these features be recovered?

      • Like Monica I'm really pissed to lose this option. It was my favorite Edge feature. My love for this phone has certainly paled. I loved being able to see at a glance whether my boss or daughter had emailed, called or texted me without searching through all of my emails, missed calls, etc. It was the number one thing I told people about that were trying to decide what phone to get. It was the feature that differentiated the phone in a market flooded with options.

        I assume I can't uninstall the update. :-/

        • You cannot uninstall Android update. If you really need the old version, you have to flash the phone with old firmware and disable automatic updates. Some Samsung service centers may help to do this. Don't do it by yourself unless you know what you are doing.

      • I am seriously pissed off about this part. It is one of the few things I liked about my phone...

    • My S7 updated earlier this week. Did the ability to look at different dates in the calendar go away with Nougat? For example, if I wanted to look at a date in the past or future, I could just tap and enter the month or year. I can't do that now and have to scroll either way if I need to look at a past or future date. Very annoying.

      • it is time to use Google Calendar app. S Planner (now named as Calendar in Nougat udpate) becomes only worse in each "update".

        • I can read partly of it, but I can't read the rest of it. At the bottom of the message, it says "view all", but when I click on it, it brings me the file of a photo. It's an MMS

          • Did you actually download the whole message? It seems the message was not downloaded fully.

    • I lost all of my voicemail after this update. How do I get my voice messages back? I'm so upset with this update.

      • Voicemail should be saved on your carrier's server, but the phone. Did you access your voicemail box by directly dialing the access number (which should be provided by your carrier)?

    • I'm using an s7 Edge in Pakistan and still haven't received the Nougat update. Is there something I should be worried about, considering almost every other smartphone around me has it up and running since quote some time now?

    • I got the update last week, after the update the video player keeps crashing. It shows an error "Cannot play the video".
I always have to restart my phone to use the vedio player. Also the videos do not play in other players. Even the YouTube videos show a playback error.
Please help with this, it is very annoying to restart the phone always before playing any video.

    • Hi,
Since my s7 edge was updated to Android N, i am not notified with the missed calls neither on the lock screen nor the notification bar. I have checked all the settings and unable to find a solution for this. Can anyone please tell me if this is a bug or if there is any settings that i have to change?
      Thanks,
      Nandan

        • Yes, through the call log i get to know there was a missed call but it doesn't show on the lock screen nor the notification bar. I have tested it several times too.

          • The problem is fixed. Trucaller was the culprit. It was blocking the notification. I uninstalled it and now i am able to see the missed call notification normally.

            • I do not have Trucaller on my phone but I am having the same problem. I no longer have the little icon notification on my lock screen for a missed call or that I received a text message. I have to keep my sound off at work at that is how I would know my kid or someone had texted me. I have looked at every setting in the phone and cannot find why it is gone.

            • Go to settings - applications, tap menu key (3 vertical dots in top right), tap show system apps. Then find phones app in the list, check notification settings. If show content on lock screen is selected already, you can switch to any of the other two. Then switch back.

    • I have a Galaxy S7 Edge but haven't received the 7.0 update yet. My wife got one at the same time from a different supplier (both on Amazon) but she has had the update a few weeks ago. Both these phones were SIM free and unlocked. Has anyone else had this problem or know why?

      • This is normal. Whether and when you get the Nougat update for Galaxy S7 and S7 edge depends on the original firmware, which varies from region to region and from carrier to carrier.

        You just have to wait.

      • What do you want to change?

You can use a Galaxy S7 theme to get a new look for the phone.

You can also use third-party launcher to customize the phone. You can try Google Now launcher or Nova.

        You

    • Why can't I see my favorites across the top in the messages? Why did the people edge lose individuals color? I hate this update. I used my favorites and people edge all the time. Will the colors come back?

      • I really dislike not being able to have the individual colors for certain people i had selected on my people edge. This really sucks cause it takes away from the phone. That was one of the best features. Why would they get rid of it and use 1 color for everyone. I want it back to the way it was. So we can add more people on the edge but doesn't really matter if there is no way to separate from all the other callers.

        • Yes, it's frustrating. Update should add features, not remove features. But in recent years, Samsung was a bit arrogant in removing features......

          • You can flash the phone to old firmware. But it's not trivial. You need find the firmware for your region/carrier. Then you can flash through Odin in download mode. Please note some Odin distributions may contain malware.

Don't do it unless you understand what you are doing.

Anyway, it's not recommended to flash back because you will never get new security patches unless you update the phone to latest firmware.

        • No Sim Change Alert Option.. After Updating Nougat - S7 Edge
(Settings–Lock screen and security –Find my mobile– SIM change alert ?????)

          • it seems it was removed in Nougat udpate. I am not sure whether it was removed in all regions or only in selected regions.

    • Dual SIM always on will not activate I have an EE and Virgin Sim. If am on a call with the EE sim and Someone calls the Virgin Sim the call goes to voicemail. But if am on the Virgin sim I get call waiting.

      • Dual sim version of Galaxy S7 and S7 edge is dual standby, not dual active. By default, when you are on a voice call or sending SMS on one sim card, the other sim card will not be reachable. Once a sim card is unreachable, the caller will be routed differently depending on your sim card settings with your carrier (not on the phone). It can be your voicemail, or unreachable tone, or diverting to other numbers deepening on your settings with your carrier (again, it has nothing to do with the phone). This is what you experienced when on a call with EE.

The reason is that for dual standby phones, there can be only one active connection because two sim card share one set of hardware. But sim card can "listen" to their own network through time sharing. But when you are engaged in a call through 2G network, the sum card will take over the hardware and the other sim card cannot connect.

But if you are using voice through VoLTE, which uses packet switching, the sim card will not take over the hardware. The other sim card can still "listen" to it's network. When someone calls you on this number, you will get notified on the incoming call. In this case, you can not use hold or wait. You can ignore it. If you do anything on the incoming call, you current call will stop. This is what happened when you are engaged in calls with Virgin SIM.

Please VoLTE works only if both networks (caller and receiver) supports it.

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge only supports one 4G + 2G (the sim card slot doesn't matter). This means only one sim card can use VoLTE.
