Update: Galaxy S7 (including Galaxy S7 edge) use almost identical notification icons and status icons as Galaxy S6. This guide also applies to Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
Similar to other Android phones, on the top of Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 edge, you can find the transparent status bar (which is on the top of Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen) with some icons.
In the right side of the status bar, you can find status icons which indicate the status of the mobile network signal, WiFi connection, time, battery levels and many other system-level status.
In the left side of the status bar, you can find notification icons. These notification icons in Samsung phones usually associated with corresponding apps. Normally, you may also get a notification message associated with the notification icon.
If you want to know the meaning of these status icons and notification icons in Samsung Galaxy S6 (and S6 edge) and other Samsung phones, this page is for you. Samsung phone icons (status, notification) are more or less universal.
As you may know, in different regions, the design of status icons may be different. Some carrier may add a few special icons for their special network features or services.
In addition, third-party apps normally use their own notifications icons.
So, if you find a status icon or notification icon that is not covered in this guide, don’t be panic. You may take a screenshot and share with the community in the comment box below so that the community can help you find the meaning of such a status icon or notification icon.
Sometimes, status icons and notification icons in Samsung Galaxy S6 and other Samsung phones are just referred to as “indicator icons“.
Samsung Galaxy S6 edge shares almost identical status icons and system notification icons as Galaxy S6, so this guide applies to both phones. In the text, we will just use the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Although it is not absolutely required, most Galaxy S6 phones are using SIM card issued by your carrier (see this page for SIM card guide for Galaxy S6). When you turn on the phone
, Galaxy S6 connects to the carrier’s mobile network (or roams to partners’ network).The mobile network status usually includes signal strength and network type for mobile data connections.

| Mobile network signal strength indicator. This status icon in Galaxy S6 shows you how strong the mobile network signal is in your area. More bars mean stronger signal, and therefore, the connection is usually more stable. If you can only see one bar, voice or data connection may be interrupted frequently. Because different phones manufacturers may use different ways to normalize the signal strength, it is meaningless to compare the number of bars on your Galaxy S6 with other phones. You can get accurate (and actual) signal strength in dBm in Settings–About device –Status. | |
| Roaming. Your Galaxy S6 is registered in other carriers’ network, not in your carrier’s own mobile network. This status icon usually shows when you are visiting other countries. The roaming charges are usually expensive in most regions. So, it is better to check the roaming rate before using any services when you get this status icon. | |
| GPRS network connected. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the slowest 2G mobile data connection. If there are no available 4G, 3G or Edge networks, mobile data in Galaxy S6 will fail back to GPRS. | 4G network connected. This status icon in Galaxy S6 is very confusing because it is usually NOT 4G LTE. This status icon can indicate a network that could be anything from HSPA to HSPA+, but definitely NOT 4G LTE. This status icon is used in some regions to differentiate 3G and 4G LTE. In other words, in these regions, the status icon means H or H+. | |
| 4G network is transmitting data. Again, this 4G status icon in Galaxy S6 means data are transmitted through anything from HSPA to HSPA+, except 4G LTE. | |
| 4G LTE network connected. LTE (Long-Term Evolution) is usually called 4G in most regions. Of course, there is the even faster LTE+ in some regions. You will see an additional + sign on the top right. Unlike 3G, HSPA, and HSPA+, the frequency of 4G LTE in different regions (and different carriers) differs dramatically (bands). When you travel to other regions, you may find out your Galaxy S6 is limited to 3G or HSPA or HSPA+ network. This is normal because the radio frequency used in that region for LTE maybe not activated in your Galaxy S6. | |
| Data transmitting through 4G LTE. In some regions, the status icon is different. In these regions, there are two arrows below 4G in the status icon to indicating data transmitting through 4G LTE network | |
| Airplane mode (flight mode) activated. Once you see this status icon in Galaxy S6, you cannot send or receive calls. You cannot send or receive SMS. You cannot use mobile data. However, it is possible to manually enable WiFi and Bluetooth after they are disabled. By default, when you enable airplane mode (flight mode), all radios are turned off, including WiFi and Bluetooth. If you know it is allowed to use WiFi or Bluetooth in that location, you can manually enable them although the flight mode status icon is still shown there. But you cannot enable mobile data or voice as long as you have this status icon. If mobile data or voice is enabled, this status icon should disappear. | |
| SIM card missing. Your Galaxy S6 will show this status icon if it fails to detect any SIM card inside. To save battery on SIM card detection, it is a good practice to enable flight mode (airplane mode) if you plan to use Galaxy S6 without a SIM card. When you receive a text message or MMS, or email or voice mail message, you will get the notifications icons in Samsung Galaxy S6 status bar.
Normally, you also get a preview of the messages except voice mail messages in the notification panel.

Hi again, I've just worked this one out. It appears to be a 'Peel Smart Remote' app that's pre-installed, and works as a remote for your TV etc. Hope that helps

Two arrows. One on top of the other, an arrow pointing to the left on the top and an arrow pointing to the right on the bottom.
In some regions, it is probably VoLTE (voice over LTE). If you disable mobile data, after a while, it should disappear.
You should use voLTE if available as it provides better voice quality and faster connection.

Very likely, it's voLTE. It's a good feature of your carrier's network. It will give you faster connection and better voice quality.

Stop the app that uploads the file. You can use smart manager in galaxy s6 to stop running apps.
You can also force stop the app in application manager.
I have one not on here.its like the WiFi connection sign but has an upside down telephone symbol underneath as opposed to the up and down arrows. Any help much appreciated it'd really bugging me.

It's the icon for your download booster, you have it switched on, turn it off in settings and it will go away

Did you try to disable mobile data? You need wait a while after disabling it.
Anyway, if it is VoLTE, it is better to use it because it provides faster connection and better voice quality.

Voicemail notification is directly sent through carrier. it could be a temp problem due to the carrier. If you missed the notifications several times (but you can receive other notifications), you may check with the carrier.

I got the S6 Edge SM 925I model and I am using AT&T LTE network. Whenever the Data is ON, I am getting only 4G symbol and i am not able to see the 4G LTE symbol While my friends are having the LTE symbol in their iPhone with the AT&T network. I tried to find the speed of the data network by using the Speed test app. I was able to see the speed around 47-51 MBPS for downlink and 17-20 MBPS for uplink. With the same app I verified with their iPhone and got the same speed.
is there anything that I need to worry whether my phone is not compatible with the AT & T LTE network? Please guide me. I am worried whether that I got the wrong model here to use :( ?
It depends on where the s6 edge was sold for. Some LTE bands are disabled because they are not used in local market.
Based on your test, it's very likely on LTE network. The upload speed is almost impossible for 3g network.
The icon depends on the phone, not the carrier. Very likely, 925I uses different icons from 925A (which is specially for AT&T). It probably uses 4g, h+, h and 3g convention.
Anyway, you can check actual network type in settings - about phone - status.

I guess you probably are talking about the number badge which shows unread messages. This is a feature of TouchWiz for some pre-installed apps.
I have notifications enabled on the lock screen. However, every time I turn the screen on and look at it it's dominated with a location notification screen. It'll sit there for 5-10 seconds while it finds my location again and then goes away. I couldn't care less about this finding my location. Turning lock screen notifications on/off seems to be an all or nothing proposition. Any say you know of exclude some of these? I am a bit perplexed why this is constantly re-finding my location as I've never been nagged about this before on any other phone.
If you are not comfortable with location service, you can turn off location totally. But this may affect location based services.
In the old phones, you were normally not notified. But it doesn't mean the location is not tracked.

I only get the "G" symbol in a LTE area. My phone provider does not know. The phone is really slow. There is no option even for 4G or LTE. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance
G means Gprs, which is the lowest mobile data. You may check with your phone company whether 4G data is enabled in your sim card.
Also make sure you get the s6 from local distributor.

Most system related status icons cannot be hidden or removed in Galaxy S6 or s6 edge unless the phone is rooted. For battery icon, you can only remove percentage, not the icon.

I am getting an exclamation point next to my WiFi symbol and mobile signal strength bars, and these are not listed above. When I get these symbols (in my house no less), my phone says I'm connected to my WiFi network, but any application I try to open that needs a WiFi or mobile connection will not work. The exclamation mark in WiFi signal indicates that you are connected to WiFi, but the router has no internet connection, or the connection is not reliable.
The ! near mobile network signal strength icon indicates mobile data is disabled or no connection is established.

In some regions, it's voice over LTE (voLTE). It gives better call quality and faster connection. It's not necessary to disable it.

I know this has been asked alot of times, I am in Singapore and I have tried disabling volte as well as switched my mobile data, the two arrows still remain. Any idea how I can get rid of them? Very likely, it's voLTE,voice over LTE. It's a good feature of a few carriers network. It should not drain much battery. You should check the detailed battery usage.
VoLTE gives you better voice quality and faster connection. You should not turn it off. If you really want to disable it, you can set it in settings - applications - phone - outgoing voice call settings. But this will not dismiss the icon for some carriers. If you want to completely dismiss the icon, you need ask your carrier to disable voLTE services. They may make it as HD voice or cIear voice or something else.

I have an icon, in the top right (i know it's a system icon and not an app icon if it's placed near the battery icon) that looks very much like the "Viber" icon (https://goo.gl/xZrNiO - this is the model) BUT the 3 wave lines are way more arched and thinner. This icon does not go away even after factory reset... it's driving me crazy :P Thank you in advance ^_^

Hi! I have the same icon as Andra Mitar. How can I get rid of it? It's there even though the wifi is off, so I think it's not wifi calling or maybe am I wrong?
WiFi calling is a mobile network feature. Once you connect to the mobile network, for some carriers, the icon will be shown. It should not check whether WiFi is enabled.
Why do you want to get rid of the icon? It doesn't affect you at all.
I have the same icon, and I'm not in the UK, and I don't know what EE is so I probably don't use it. Do I still need this icon? I looked up the internet on how to disable but the option isn't there. (I use S6 edge.)

After a recent software update I have noticed my phone is no longer receiving updates properly. I receive notifications and I get the flashing led however when I unlock the phone there is no icons on the bar at the top and I therfore have to manually go through my phone to find out what notification I received. I have already tried several forums and Youtube guides to try and resolve the issue but to no avail. I have already gone through all the relevant notification settings to make sure everything is switched on but everything seems to be in order. My only suggestion is that it could be a problem with the latest version of touchwiz. Please can you help me with this frustrating issue

The icon actually is data saver. You can disable data saver in settings - connections - data usage - data saver. Once it's disabled, the icon should disappear.
