Samsung Galaxy S6 Home screen

What is Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen?

Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen is the starting point for accessing all features in Galaxy S6 (or Galaxy S6 edge). Once Galaxy S6 is rebooted (and unlocked), the first page you encounter is the home panel of home screen (as shown below).

You can always reach Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen (and the home panel) by pressing the Home button.

Please note Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge share the identical home screen. This guide also applies to Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, although in the text, I use Galaxy S6.

Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen displays:

  • widgets;
  • shortcuts to apps (so that you can access these apps quickly);
  • app folders (for your to manage and group apps without using excessive home screen panels);
  • screen  indicators (indicating the location of current panel/page among all home screen panels);
  • favorite apps (which will show on all panels of Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen. You can put most frequently used apps here to use Galaxy S6 effectively);
  • apps screen icon (link to Apps screen)

By default, Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen consists of several pages (called panels). To view other panels of Galaxy S6 home screen, swipe to the left or right, or tap one of the screen indicators at the bottom of the screen as shown below.

Please note, Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen does NOT support cycling through home screen panels. In other words, there is a start and a end of home screen panels when you swipe the home panels in one direction. In old Samsung Galaxy devices, for example in Samsung Galaxy S5, when you reach the  right most panel, next panel will be the leftmost panel.  This feature was removed in Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen.

  • His yes. I have the letter N icon on the top of my screen where is shows battery and WiFi. And just wondering what if means. Because I only had the phone yesterday? ?

    • If you are using Chrome, open the website, tap the menu key (3 vertical dots in top right), you can find the option of Add to homescreen. Tap it to create a shortcut in your galaxy s6 home screen.

      • This doesn't work for me. I've tried probably a dozen times to add a shortcut to my homescreen, and the phone says it's been added. But it doesn't work. The shortcut isn't there.

      • Are you sure you're checking the correct panel? After adding the shortcut to the webpage, check all your panels to see if it got placed on one of them.

  • awesome thanks, i was looking there and still didnt see anything :-/ but done now. also would like to know i have changed my message notification to one of my own, but i still get the phones own thing going off as well, do you know why this would be?

  • its not the ring tone, i have that all figured out, but for some reason my message notification is, well its almost like its playing two different ones :-/ the one i chose and the one that is default on the phone i cant figure it out for the life of me

  • I am trying to add a theme to my home page on my s6. it isn't working. this only happened after that stupid Flipboard ended up on my phone

    • Somehow I changed which page is my homepage. I did this before with my S4 but can't seem to be able to change it back on my S6.

      • as mentioned in this page: To set a panel as the main home screen (home of home screen), tap the Home icon in the screen indicators (when in editing mode).

  • I am trying to delete a panel on from the home screen. I tried to tap and hold to drag it to Remove at the top, but not able to drag it to remove. What do I do?

    • Do you see the remove button? You just hold and move to the button to remove that home panel.

  • is there a way to remove the icon motion that they added? it's like on the iphone when the icons move when you move there phone.

  • Hi there

I only have 4 icons in my favourite Apps area at the bottom of the screen. If I edit it, it doesn't seem to allow me to change that in order to make it 5, which most people seem to have.

    • If you drag and drop an app to the tray, what happens? The apps icon cannot be replaced or moved. All other 4 app icons can be removed or replaced

    • If you drag and drop an app to the tray, what happens? The all apps icon cannot be replaced or moved. All other 4 app icons can be removed or replaced

  • My home screen changed and I want to reset it. I see the home icon at the top of each page in panel view. I tap the preferred page to highlight the one I want but nothing happens

  • If you have several home panels, is there a quick way to jump to a specific panel instead having to swipe through them all to get to the one you want? I have the S6 edge.

    • Yes, just above the fav tray, there are dots to indicate corresponding pages (indicated as screen indicators in the first picture). When you add more home panels, the number of dots will increase accordingly. Tap the dot to jump to corresponding home screen panels.

The icons for home and briefing are different from others.

      • Thanks for your reply. Selecting and tapping a particular dot would indeed allow me to jump to the corresponding home screen panel on my S4, but I'm not getting that to happen on my S6 edge. Tapping on any dot only advances one screen at a time, the same action as swiping. I thought it was strange that Samsung would remove that feature. Has any other Verizon S6/S6 edge owners mentioned this?

        • You are right. It seems I cannot jump to the desired home screen panel directly except home panel (with home button) on s6.

It sounds like a design defect in the new TouchWiz.

          • I've been trying to do the same thing (move panels by touching the dots) and I can't. Very frustrating.

  • Hi all , I root my s6 mobile by using pingpong program after that I download some apps than I restart my phone when it's boot it up I surprise that everything's in the mobile turned to small icons including the setting statusbar even the games it's showing everything's small when I opened it
I hope that u will give me some guide to have the previous one thank you all in advance

    • We do not discuss about rooting Galaxy S6 or S6 edge as it may void the warranty in most regions.

You may check some special community on smartphone rooting, e.g., XDA.

  • OK, so I found the date and weather widget I want on my home screen, however when I try to move it, it tells me it is already there - NOT.

  • I want to put my apps in alphabetical order (this was easy on the 5) but I don't seem to be able to find where/how I can achieve this, some one please help!!!

    • Galaxy S6 does not offer this option any more. The new TouchWiz (mainly the launcher) removed the app sorting option.

Some third-party launchers offer this feature.

  • Hi there...I changed my home screen to easy mode from standard mode.
I am unable to move/rearrange/remove any app shortcut.

    regards

      • Thanks Simon....have done so and can arrange as I wish.
Why did they omit this essential feature on easy mode? You have to delete every app shortcut and then select from the app manager!! Very short-sighted!

ps...very good article by you on S6!

  • Hey there, on my S5 I could cycle through the pages on my home screen but now on my S6 edge+ home screen I cannot - once I reach the furthest page to the side I cannot continue to cycle. Sorry if I've not been very clear... But has this feature been removed or do you simply need to turn it on?

    • You cannot cycle through pages in S6 home screen (apps screen either). This is a "new" feature in the new TouchWiz.

  • Hey,

I was playing around on my s6 edge and some how changed the direction of the text. Instead of reading left-to-right it reads right-to-left, it's like it became mirrored. How do I change it back??

    • It's under developer options. Turn off force RTL layout.

Don't change settings under Galaxy s6 developer options unless you understand what you are doing.

  • Hi
I want to move the icons around the screens, but when I tap and hold and the try to move the icon the whole screem moves.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Ta

    Eddie

    • very likely, you are in edit mode.

You should tap back button to normal home screen. Then tap and hold the icon (not blank area) to move the app.

  • When I push my home button it takes me back to whichever home screen I was last on instead of my default home screen. Any ideas how to change that?

      • If I press it again it goes to the default home screen. I was hoping I could set it so that it goes to the default home screen the first time i press it

          • I've had a samsung galaxy sIII and an s4 and neither of them did this. They always took me back to the default home screen on the first press of the button. This is not normal.

          • I don't remember s3 or s4. But I just tested it on Note, Note II, Note 3, Note 4, Note 5, S6 and S6+, all returns to where you left on the home screen.

I think Google Now launcher also has similar behavior.

anyway, I don't think there are any settings to change this behavior unless you use third-party launchers.

          • They Must have changed it after the s4. I will have to check with my boyfriend and see if his s5 does the same thing.

    • I will locate my s5 to test it later.

Anyway, there are no settings to change this unless you use third party launchers.

      • Yeah, I searched everywhere I could think of so I kind of figured. Oh well. I used to use a different launcher years ago but it always seemed to bog down the phone and drain the battery like crazy.

  • on the S6, I can't seem to tap on the screen indicator dots to jump to the approprlate screen, IT just scrolls through. Is there anyway to fix this? Thaanjs .

  • I can't seem to get rid of an extra page I have on my home screen. I try to flip it up to "Remove"....and it won't go. Also, my phone is only 4 months old and I having to charge the battery sometimes a couple of times a day. Thanks!

    • You need drag it to the button. You should not release your finger until your finger is over the remove button.

For the battery issue, what's the detailed battery usage?

  • despite all the instructions above and those in user guide when I try and add an app to my home page it will not drag and drop from another screen. if I click + it goes into the app screens but will not allow me to move app from the next screen (only the more apps screen)

    • Before jumping to apps screen, you can stay at the desired home screen panel. When you tap and hold the app icon in apps screen, by default, it will be added to the home screen page which you come from.

To move apps across home screen pages, you have to practice.

  • On my S4, I could tap on one of the panel indicators from the home screen, and it would snap to whichever panel I had touched. Can you enable this on the S6?

  • Why, for the love of god, would you remove the cycling through homepanel feature?!?
This makes me want to keep using my s3 instead of my s6 :/

      • Only Samsung developers can understand. I guess none of s6 users can understand such a stupid decision.

FYI, this is a standard feature now in new Samsung phones.

    • I agree. This needs to be fixed, along with restoring the ability to jump directly to any panel by selecting the corresponding dot. What is the point of the dots if you can't do this?

It is most unfortunate that with every "new and improved" model, feature, or fix, something else that worked just fine before, either gets removed, overlooked, or made more complicated. I've only had my S6 for a few weeks, but I already have a long list of issues and complaints. Do they not seek input from existing users? If they do, I wish to participate!!

  • Hi I bought a Samsung galaxy s 6 in the UK a couple of days ago. The version that's on the phone is 5.1.1. The error that I have is that location isn't appearing on the indicator screen at the top of the screen when I activate it. Samsung said I needed to backup and reset the phone which I have done but nothing haschanged. I don't want to have to reset again if I can help it. I was then told that it only appears when you are using an app that requires location.why doesn't it just appear when I have activists it so I know whether it's on or not? Can you advise. Thanks.

    • This is normal. The icon is shown only location service is actively used, in most regions. In some regions, it's shown only when the phone is searching GPS.

So, it's normal as I know of you cannot see it after enabling location services.

  • Hi, I seem to have somehow accidentally deleted a home screen panel. Is there anyway to recover it or do I need to do it all over again?thanks

    • You can just add a new one. There is no undo option.

In Home screen edit mode (tap and hold any blank area), flick to the rightmost, and you can find the + sign after the right most panel.

  • I loaded the new Android update last week on my Galaxy 6s and now my Home Screen and all the other pages are blank. I have the Apps icon at the bottom and I can go into apps but all my shortcuts disappeared on my home screen including the weather, time and google search bar all with them. I can pinch the home screen and it takes me to the place where you can pick widgets and themes but I cannot drag any of my Apps icon from the Apps screen. The only way to see my home screen again is but switching to easy mode but then I have the extra large display which I find hard to use. What can I do here?

    • No, you cannot remove the dots for the screen indicators. Any reasons for removing them? Some third-party launchers don't have them.

  • How do I lock the icons in place on my home screens? They frequently move by themselves.

I never had this problem with my HTC or LG devices and my husband gets tired of rebuilding my home screens. It never happens on his S6 and he hasn't had to do anything to lock them.

Please do not suggest other launchers, thank you.

    • Unfortunately, there are no solutions as I know. The icons moved because the screen was touched accidentally.

This is very common on phones with small bezels. It can be very frustrating for S7 edge owners.

If you enabled smart lock, you may disable it if you want to lower the chance of accidental touch. Also, lock the screen manually with power button before putting the phone into pocket.

  • My home screen icons are not looking the default way, but there are oval little squares around them. For example, my apps screen icon doesnt only consists from the regular 16 little squares, but it has a grey background as well. What should I do?

    • Tap and hold the app, then move it to any location. If you move across the right boarder or left boarder, you can move the app to a new panel.

If you updated the phone to Nougat, once you tap and hold an app, you can find the move apps option in the top. You can then navigated to the new panel, then drag the app down to desired location. This is easier than the first

      Did I misunderstand your question?

  • I just bought this s6, (refurbished) and it said update available. I ran it, it went thru the whole thing then went back to update available. Over and over. BUT, on one time thru it did change the look of my icons and my drop down menu. I hate it. Anything I can do? Besides, my old droid ultra had way better service. Very disappointed.

  • (Sorry if I repeat this question) How do I get rid of and replace the Apps Folder icon at the bottom of the screen, next to (what you call) "Favorites? (It's in the same configuration as the screenshot above.) Nothing happens when I hold it, I can't drag it off. Thank you!

    • You can move apps out of the favourite tray to make it empty (if you hide apps screen icon). But you cannot remove the favourite try. It's part (place holder) of the home screen in Samsung launcher.

  • On my S6, I would like to add a Chrome icon. It's not in my app drawer but it is installed and I have to hunt for it. How do I get it to appear on my homescreen or app drawer. Thank you.

    • Did you disable it? You can enable it in Settings - apps. You can find Chrome there. Tap it, then you can choose to enable it.

  • I have about 2/3rds of a circle with a + sign in the middle. What is this emblem? Please help me.

  • There is a ringtone in my Galaxy S6 that I want to copy over to my S9. It is not available in S9. Is there a way that I can locate the ringtone file in S6 so I can copy it and install it in S9. I have searched through all the files in S6, including the Ringtone file, with no success. I have installed ES File Explorer as you explained above and still unable to locate where the S6 default ringtones are stored either as mp3 files or files in some other format that could be copied. Please help. Thanks.

  • The home icon is over what is the third panel (first is a news panel that was just there (in other words I didn't do anything to create it); second panel is the one I would like as home page). I want to make a different panel the home page. Is there a way to move the home icon to another panel?

    • All your questions were already answered in the page.

To see the home icon, you can "on  Samsung Galaxy S6 home screen, tap and hold an empty area, or pinch your fingers together to access the available options as shown below."

“To set a panel as the main home screen (home of home screen), tap the Home icon in the screen indicators.”
