Update 1: Added section FAQs on Galaxy S6 Fast charging to address some questions you may have.

Unlike Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6 battery and Galaxy S6 edge battery are non-removable for customers. You have to visit local Samsung service center if you need change the Galaxy S6 battery or Galaxy S6 edge battery.

This means proper maintenance for Galaxy S6 battery or Galaxy S6 edge battery is extremely important. Replacing Galaxy S6 battery will be surely more expensive than replacing a Galaxy S5 battery.

Normally, Galaxy S6 battery and Galaxy S6 edge battery can last 2-3 years.  If you charge the Galaxy S6 battery or Galaxy S6 edge battery improperly, the lifespan of the battery can  be shortened significantly.

Charging Galaxy S6 battery

You need charge Galaxy S6 battery before using Galaxy S6 for the first time or when it has been unused for extended periods.

Before charging Galaxy S6 battery

You should only use Samsung-approved chargers, batteries, and cables. Low quality chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage your Galaxy S6.

When the Galaxy S6 battery level is low, the battery icon in the stats bar (top of the screen) appears empty.

If Galaxy S6 battery is completely discharged, Galaxy S6 cannot be turned on immediately when the charger is connected. Allow a depleted Galaxy S6 battery to charge for a few minutes before turning on the phone.

If you use multiple apps at once, network apps, or apps that need a connection to another device, the battery will drain quickly. To avoid disconnecting from the network or losing power during a data transfer, always use these apps after fully charging the battery.

Using a power source other than the USB power adapter, such as a computer, may result in a slower charging speed due to a lower output current.

Charging Galaxy S6 battery

To charge Galaxy S6 battery, connect the USB cable to the USB power adapter,  then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack of Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge.

While charging Galaxy S6 battery

Galaxy S6 can be used while it is charging, but it may take longer to fully charge Galaxy S6 battery.

If Galaxy S6 receives an unstable power supply while charging, the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from Galaxy S6.

While charging Galaxy S6 battery, Galaxy S6 and the charger may heat up. This is normal and should not affect the phone’s lifespan or performance. If Galaxy S6 battery gets hotter than usual, the charger may stop charging.

If Galaxy S6 is not charging properly, take the phone and the charger to a Samsung Service Center.

After charging Galaxy S6 battery

After fully charging Galaxy S6 battery, disconnect the phone  from the charger. First unplug the charger from Galaxy S6, and then unplug it from the electric socket.

To save energy, unplug the charger when not in use. The charger does not have a power switch, so you must unplug the charger from the electric socket when not in use to avoid wasting power. The charger should remain close to the electric socket and easily accessible while charging.

How to reduce Galaxy S6 battery consumption

Galaxy S6  provides various options that help you conserve battery power. These include:

  • Optimize Galaxy S6 using the Smart manager.
  • When you are not using the phone, switch to sleep mode by pressing the Power key.
  • Activate power saving mode.
  • Close unnecessary apps.
  • Deactivate the Bluetooth feature when not in use.
  • Deactivate the Wi-Fi feature when not in use.
  • Deactivate auto-syncing of apps.
  • Decrease the back-light time.
  • Decrease the screen brightness.

Galaxy S6 Fast charging

Samsung Galaxy S6  or  Galaxy S6 edge has a built-in fast charging feature. You can use this feature to charge Galaxy S6 battery more quickly while Galaxy S6 or its screen is turned off.

About Samsung Galaxy S6 Fast charging

Samsung Galaxy S6 Fast charging uses battery charging technology that charges Galaxy S6 battery faster by increasing the charging power.

Galaxy S6 supports Samsung’s Adaptive fast charging feature and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0.

To use Galaxy S6 Fast charging on your phone, connect it to a battery charger that supports Adaptive fast charging or Quick Charge 2.0.

How to increase Galaxy S6 battery charging speed

To increase the charging speed, turn the phone off or turn its screen off when you charge Galaxy S6 battery.

While charging Galaxy S6 battery, if  Galaxy S6 is turned off, the Galaxy S6 fast charging icon appears on the screen.

You cannot use Galaxy S6 fast charging feature when the screen is turned on. Turn off the screen to increase the charging speed.

You can check the remaining charge time on the screen. The actual remaining time may vary depending on the charging conditions.

You cannot use the built-in Galaxy S6 fast charging feature when you charge Galaxy S6 battery using a standard battery charger.

If Galaxy S6 heats up or the ambient air temperature rises, the charging speed may decrease automatically. This is a normal operating condition to prevent damage to the phone/battery.

Galaxy S6 wireless charging

Samsung Galaxy S6 (and galaxy S6 edge)  has a built-in wireless charging coil. You can charge Galaxy S6 battery using a wireless charger, which is sold separately.

Using Galaxy S6 wireless charging

To use Galaxy S6 wireless charging,  you need place the center of Galaxy S6’s  back on the center of the wireless charger as shown below.

While using Galaxy S6 wireless charging, you can check the remaining charge time on the screen. The actual remaining time may vary depending on the charging conditions.

After fully charging Galaxy S6 battery using Galaxy S6 wireless charging, disconnect the phone  from the wireless charger.

You can check Galaxy S6 battery’s charging status from the battery icon on the screen.

When there are foreign materials between Galaxy S6 and the wireless charger, Galaxy S6 may not charge properly.

If you use the wireless charger in areas with weak network signals, you may lose network reception.

You should try to use Samsung-approved wireless chargers. If you use other wireless chargers, Galaxy S6 battery may not charge properly.

FAQs on Galaxy S6 Fast charging

Q1: Can I disable Galaxy S6 fast charging on Galaxy S6 or S6 edge?

A1: No, you cannot disable Galaxy S6 fast charging in the phone settings. This is different from the fast charging in Galaxy Note 4.

However, Galaxy S6 fast charging will be disabled automatically when:

  • you are not using a normal wall charger, not the adaptive charger.
  • or you are using the phone with screen on.
  • or battery level is more than 50%.

Q2: Is Galaxy S6 fast charging harmful for the battery?

A2: No, Galaxy S6 fast charging is not harmful to the battery in Galaxy S6. Otherwise, Samsung would not bundle the phone with an adaptive charger.

Galaxy S6 fast charging may only marginally affect battery life. Such impact is negligible compared to battery life span.

For most Galaxy S6 owners, after 18-24 months, the battery will lose about 25%-50% capacity. This applies to most quality smartphone batteries, not just to Galaxy S6. Most smartphone batteries have a shell life of 2.5-5 years only.

So, after 18-24 months, if you want the battery to perform as today, you need change the battery, no matter you are using fast charging or slow charging.

Q3: How long should it take to charge my Galaxy S6 when fast charging is used?

It should take less than 2 hours (around 1.5 hours or even less) to fully charge the Galaxy S6 or S6 edge with the bundled fast charger.

The charging time depends on several factors: battery usage by the background jobs on the phone, power supply stability, battery level left before charging, and ambient temperature.

Q4: Galaxy S6 got hot when fast charging is used. Is it normal? Should I be worried?

It is normal to feel the Galaxy S6 is hot when it is being charged. You probably should not be worried about it.

Galaxy S6 has its own protection mechanism to prevent overheating. It can automatically adjust the charging current based on temperature feedback.

Q5: Should I use slow charger for Galaxy S6 to extend the battery life?

Unlikely, a slow charger can noticeably extend battery life for your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge.

You probably are wasting time and investment for not using Galaxy S6 when you need. The value of the phone is reflected how many hours you are using them.

Again, you still have to consider to change the battery after 18-24 months if you want to continue to use Galaxy S6 then.

Q6: I need a new wall charger, how can I know the charger is compatible with Galaxy S6 (or S6 edge)?

You need read the specs of the charger carefully whether fast charging is supported.

The best option is to get a Samsung Adaptive Fast Charger.  You can normally get it under $20, although the MSRP is about $35.

Q7: Can I use my Galaxy Note 4 fast charger for Galaxy S6?

Yes, you can use Galaxy Note 4 fast charger for Galaxy S6. They are compatible.

Q8: When connecting fast charger to wireless charger, Galaxy S6 fast charging is not working. Why?

It should NOT work. Wireless charging is not compatible with Galaxy S6 fast charging.

If you need fast charging, you need connect the charger to the phone directly.

For wireless charging, the adaptive fast charger works just like normal wall charger.

Q9:  A guru told me I must connect the fast charger to wall outlet directly, not to an extension cord,  to get Galaxy S6 fast charging. Is it right?

No, it is totally wrong.

The fast charger has no way to know whether it is connected to the wall outlet or an extension cord. And this is NOT important.

On the contrary, if you have a surge protector, it is better to put the charger behind the protector (and usually connected to an extension cord).

  • Does one need to charge the S6 Edge for any particular amount of time, the first time one charges it, or can you just take off charge and use it as soon as it says 100% ?

    • usually you need a few more mins from 100% to "charged". There is no need to put Galaxy S6 or S6 edge on the charger after it is fully charged. It is not good for battery life.

      • I have a problem with the fast charging capability of thE s6 edge. My phone keeps having this notification saying dock connected. And when i tried to charge it again, fast charging now wont work. Does anyone also have the same problem I have?. Please advice on what to do. Thanks

          • I have this problem also. Fast charging is not working on my s6 and I received notification saying dock connected, since then fast charging does not work. Note: I am using the original adaptive fast charging from samsung. Hope you can help me to resolve the problem

          • Hi simon. I dont know if I have done anything on the develover option. Can you help me figure out if I have done on that developer option? Thanks

    • I have a surge protector that I use in bedroom mainly to give myself additional electrical sockets (not to protect against a surge). That said, if I plug my s6 adaptive charger into one of the empty sockets on the protector, how do I know if it is "behind" the protector or "in front of" the protector. Also, what does it mean to be "behind"? Does that mean "shielded/under full protection of the protector" or does it mean located such that it's positioned first before the protection (thus left unprotected)? Sorry, I'm not sure I have enough basic understanding to effectively communicate my confusion. If anyone understands what I am asking and can help me understand, I will be very grateful. Thanks!

  • My S6 takes about 5-6 hours to full charge with the fast charging adapter even when the screen is black. It shows a red light on the top of the screen. Is this the fast charging icon? And What might be the issue of slow charging? Thanks.

    • It should take less than 1.5 hours to charge the Galaxy S6 battery (with the bundled charge). The red LED just indicating it is charging. There is no special LED indicator for fast charging in Galaxy S6.

Did you check whether you insert the cable tightly in both the charger side and phone side? You can also try other USB cables.

If it always take more than 2.5 hours to charge the battery (with the bundled charger and usb cable), you may visit local Samsung service center to check the phone and charger.

      • I have also had this problem. The charger they supplied takes 5 to 6 hours and any other charger takes 2 hrs. I will be bringing my phone back to the store some I purchased it last week.

        • yes, it could be due to a faulty charger. You can check again to make sure the USB cable is inserted tightly, and the charger is inserted into the socket tightly.

      • Are you using the bundled Samsung charger and the USB cable? Make sure the usb cable is inserted tightly in both ends.

    • me too my s6edge is like 6 hours charging i bought it 3days ago and using the charger from the box itself...

  • You have indicated that the charger should be unplugged after the phone is fully charged. I had understood that this phone, as opposed to the S5, did not have that issue. At the very least, the Samsung Adaptive Charger would "know" the battery was full and decrease the power being delivered to it, so as not to hurt the battery. Is this incorrect, and we have the same issue that we cannot leave the device plugged in (or on a wireless charger) overnight?

    • Adaptive charger can not cut off current output automatically, just like normal chargers. The "adaptive" means if battery level is lower than certain value, it can output more power (if the screen is off). Once the output switch back to normal, there is no difference between adaptive or normal chargers. Of course, the phone can regulate the current to battery, but it cannot cut off the current from the charger. So, it is still recommended to unplug the USB cable from Galaxy S6 after it shows "charged".

For wireless charger, it depends on the brand and technology. For most branded Qi wireless chargers (e.g., the official Samsung one), it allows the phone to control the output. So, it is safe to put the phone on the wireless charger for extended time, if wireless charging is built in ("supported" sometimes is not equal to built-in.).

Anyway, the good practice is to disconnect Galaxy S6 from the charger once it is fully charged.

But it is not necessary to over-react: it is NOT necessary to get up at 2am to disconnect the charger. Leaving it on the charger may only slightly affect your battery, not significantly.

The most important thing is that you should not use the phone excessively when it is charging, or when it is siting on the charger.

  • I bought my S6 yesterday and the worker at Sprint said that using a regular charging brick/cord (samsung or not) may hurt the battery. He said the phone is built for fast charging and that using a "trickle charger" (as he called it) will cause the battery to lose performance. I don't truly believe that because the wireless charging isn't fast charging so it would theoretically do the same thing has a regular brick/cable. Have you heard anything about this? Thank you.

    • Very likely, the guy is wrong. He was probably sleeping during product training.

It will just take a bit longer time to charge Galaxy S6 when using normal charger. I don't think it is harmful. Actually, when the battery level reaches 50% or higher, the adaptive charger has no difference to a normal charger.

Wireless charging is a bit different. Galaxy S6 has more control on the charging current. But the charging current is limited to 2000mA (at 5V), which is similar to normal charger. Some wireless chargers may have even lower output.

Of course, you should use branded chargers, not the cheap ones.

  • I just my S6 Edge today. After playing around for few hours, the battery drained out to about 8%. Then I start the charge. However, it's been 5 hours now and the so-called "fast charging" only get 80%. What's wrong?

    • Are you using the bundled Samsung charger and the USB cable? Make sure the usb cable is inserted tightly in both ends.

Normally it should take less than 1.5 hours.

      • simon you keep saying the same thing to everyone... how bout we just admit the fast charging doesn't work... and find a solution

        • Actually fast charging works on galaxy s6. Most owners may not understand when the fast charging will be triggered. Without fast charging, there is no way for you to charge Galaxy s6 in about 1.5 hours.

If fast charging doesn't work for you with the bundled charger and cable, you can always visit Samsung service center to check the hardware.

        • Fast charging most certainly works on my Galaxy 6 Edge. I can go from 15% to 100% in a little over an hour as long as I use the included fast charging cord. I believe that some people are having issues but reading over the comments most seem to be operator error. I just wanted to back up that I've never had a phone that charged this fast or worked this well. I'm sorry you are not having the same results.

          • I agree with mojo, I just got a Samsung S6 a few days ago and the fast charging is awesome! I couldn't believe how fast my phone charged! I even put a S3 on the fast charger and it charged in a little over 2 hours! Also when using the fast charge with the S6, if you swipe down from the top , and it pulls down your charging percwnt, it will sa fast charging above the charged %. If it doesn't say that then you are not using the fast charge.

        • Simon's response may be the same for everyone but it actually solved my problem. I thought the adapter end was inserted all the way but after applying a little more force than i have normally had to do, it did snap in a little further, which then solved my fast charge problems

  • Hi..I just brought S6 edge yesterday but haven't read the booklet inside the box that I should charge first! Till became 15% before I charge. Will it effect my battery?? Will the battery will be fast to low battery? I'm worried because most of my new cp have charge first before I used... Thank you

    • it doesn't matter. you should not be worry about it.

The new phone should have 50-60% battery so that the buyer can test the phone.

  • I picked up my S6 2 days ago and having the same charging issues mentioned above with the bundled S6 charger and cable. Using the bundled charger it takes over 4 hours to charge the phone with 25+% battery life, however using the Samsung Wireless charger that came with my phone deal (thanks Carphone Warehouse) the charge time reported 1 hour 40 minutes to charge when at 25+%. It would appear there is an issue with the standard charger connecting through the USB port to the phone as the wireless charger was powered using the Samsung S6 Charger and cable that came with the phone.

    • It's abnormal. You can visit local Samsung service center to check the phone.

Of course, you need check whether the usb cable is inserted tightly in both ends when use the wall charger.

      • Thanks Simon, I'll double check the connections, but I think call to the service centre is in order. Very curious that there are a number of people with similar issues.

          • Hi Simon, Issues resolved......ID10T error!

I double checked the USB cable connection in to the charger and found that it was sitting proud and could see about 1mm of the USB metal jack. As soon as I pushed it in fully so the white plastic USB jack surround touched the charger the phone recognised it as a "Fast Charger" and reported less that 50 mins to charge from 40%. Looks like connections need to be fully mated!

            Thanks

    • On top of making sure that all of the components are securely connected, I learned (via personal experience) the phone will not initiate "fast charging"unless it is plugged directly into the outlet, meaning no extension cord, surge protector, multi-plug etc. I hope this helps, seeing as I was a bit frustrated before realizing this.

      • I'm not sure if I'm just lucky but my original Samsung charger is plugged into an extension cord which is plugged into a surge protector and I still get the "Fast Charging". It takes a little over an hour approximately to charge from around 20% to 100%. I appreciate your comment and even though I did not have the same issue, it is making me reassess my method and that maybe I should just have it directly connected to to an outlet to avoid disruption from the other power sources. I am interested if others have had this issue as well. Thanks again!

        • Nobody tells that you must connect the charger to wall outlet directly. You can connect the charger to any extension cord.

If you have surge protector, actually, it is recommended to connect the charger (and any electronic devices) into the extension socket from the surge protector (if it is within the capacity of the surge protector).

Fast charging has nothing to do with how you connect the charger to the wall (as long as voltage is right). Whether you connect the charger to the outlet directly, or to an extension cord, does NOT matter. As mentioned, a surge protector actually is good for phone charging.

  • hello, my s6 edge takes too long to charge. it says "3hr 43m to fully charge" while it has 46% charge already. the charging is really slow!! and the wires are tightly connected and im using the bundled charger which came with the phone.

    • Don't trust the estimation. Write down actual charging time. With the bundled charger and usb cable, it should not take more than 2 hours to charged.

If you consistently get longer time, you may check with the seller or local Samsung service center to check or replace or repair the phone.

Slow charging problem can be caused by simple usb connector issue or complicated board issue. Better to solve it when you can replace it.

  • Do I need to charge 8 hour for the 1st time for a new s6 edge? Or just the fast charge of 1.5 hour will be OK?

    • It's not necessary. Once the battery is full (indicared as charged), you can use it. Actually, the new battery should have about 50% battery for you to test the phone.

  • My new S6 will not charge with some of the cables I own. It works fine with the in-the-box cable and some of my other cables. When shopping for new cables, what should I look for (in terms of specifications) to be sure that they will work?

    • quality USB cable is needed. Galaxy s6 uses standard micro USB cable Try to get usb cables from a computer shop not a handphone shop.

  • Hi I charged my samsung s6 without letting the battery drain for the first time. I charged it 4 hours. I's this OK? Or this can harm the battery?

    • I think it's ok.

It's not necessary to drain the battery. The new galaxy s6 or s6 edge should have about 50% battery fir you to try the phone.

Once the battery is full (indicated as charged, and you should get a notification add well), you can remove the phone from the charger. It should take less than 2 hours.

  • I think it might be better to trickle charge the battery? I've noticed impressive performance from the batttery when not inserting the cable all the way into the power block to where it slow charges. Am I hurting my battery? Can any one back this up?

    • Slow charging usually is helpful for the battery. Fast charging may marginally affect battery life.

But you probably should NOT use your method. You should get a quality charger with lower current output.

If you don't insert the cable tightly, the charging current may be not stable. This would be not good for your galaxy s6 battery.

  • my samsung s6 edge takes upto 4.5 hours to full charge and it lasts only 6 hours ,,,,,,chargng with original box fast charger with properly connectd in both charger nd phone ,,,,,,,, what to do ??? help me ,,,,, i bought it 14/04/2015 ,,,,, help me ....... can it replce or what is the other solution ??/

    • There are two problems based on your description.

      1. The galaxy s6 edge charging time should be less than 2 hours with the bundled charger and cable. If it takes 4.5 hours, you should check the usb cable in both ends and make sure they are inserted to the charger and phone tightly. A few owners experienced similar charging issue fir new galaxy s6 and found out it's caused by failing to insert the usb cable all the way down to the charger.

      2. short battery life of galaxy s6 edge. Battery life depends on your usage. You can check the usage in settings -- battery. You may also try to reboot the phone to see whether the issue persists.

  • Hi Simon, I just got my S6 today.. Can I immediately use it.. Or should I charge the battery full for the first time before using it?

    • You can use it immediately. The battery level in the new galaxy s6 should be around 50%. It's not necessary to charge the battery to full before first time use.

Whenever you charge the battery, you should wait till it is full.

  • Is charging the s6 like charging iPhone? Meaning I can plug it into charger any time to top it off? Such as plugging it in between 20-50% or should I wait til its critically low

    • Yes, you can charge it at any time.

But when you charge the battery, you'd better wait till it is full.

  • Hi, I'm interested to know charging my phone with lower mAh output, does increase lifespan of battery or doesnt have any impact.

    • Lower current is good for battery if you can wait. But it is NOT necessary for modern battery. It may marginally increase the lifespan of your battery, but do not expect too much,

  • I bot a Samsung wireless charger to charge my Samsung Galaxy S6 but it does not come with a wall adapter or a cable to power it up. The docs that came with the wireless charger say to only use a 5V 2A adapter to power it. My S6 came with an adapter that has two ratings: 9V 1.67A or 5V 2A. Can I use the adapter included with my S6 to power my wireless charger without any issues or do I for sure need to buy a 'pure' 5V 2A adapter? I'm getting conflicting answers to that question from both Samsung tech support and my cell provider. I don't want to spend even more $ for the wireless charging feature, that should have been included with the phone at the price it is, if I don't have to.

    • Any quality USB charger should work. You should not worry about the output current as long as it is lower than 2.1A.

You can surely use the Samsung wall charger (which is a fast/adaptive charger) bundled with your Galaxy S6. Adaptive charger will function as normal charger for wireless charger.

  • hi simon, how do i know the phone is on 'fast charging' mode? based on the time i used to charge or is there any icon shown? i try plug in the s6 charger and the normal samsung charger, the charging icon looks the same.

    • When an adaptive changer is connected, it will show a notification telling you that before screen is off.

There is no special icons for fast charging. If you turn on screen, it will NOT switch back to normal charging. Fast charging in Galaxy S6 works only when screen is off.

Anyway, the switch is automatic. If you turn on screen to check, fast charging is switched back already. Turning off the screen will make it switch back to fast charging if the battery level is less than about 50%.

      • what kind of notification shown before the screen is off? if not mistaken, i dont rmb seeing any notification

        • Fast charger is connected. It's a splash notification. Next time, if the battery is lower than 40% you may look at the screen when connecting the charger.

          • seriously, there is no such notification. I charged the phone when the battery left 15%, I only saw the battery icon on the top right has the charge sign..that's all i saw. Is that normal?

          • It's a splash notification lasting a few seconds. You need look at the screen when connecting the charger.

It doesn't matter whether you catch the notification. You just pay attention to the charging time.

          • i see, now i see the splash notification. thanks for the info. charging time is about 2 hrs for my case. However, you mentioned that the fast charging will only work until the battery reaches 50% and after that it will back to normal charging. But when my phone battery reach 90%, it still wrote fast charging when i pull down the notification window to see the charging percentage. Is that normal too?

  • hi just got my s6. after a few minutes of connecting it to the charger, in less than 10 mins...the entire unit, especially the edges heats up...is it normal?

    • It should be hot when charging. Fast charging usually makes it even hotter than other smartphones when fast charging is in action.

Galaxy S6, like other flagship smartphones, has its protection mechanism on overheat. It will automatically slow down the charging or stop charging if the temperature is closing the limit.

Anyway, normally you should not worry about the heat when charging Galaxy S6.

  • Hi, I've ordered my s6 today and would like to ask if fast charging causes damage to the battery in the long run as I'm planning to use it for about 3 years? Also is it true that slow charging is good for the battery? Similar to the note 4, can we disable fast charging in the s6 or doors it always use fat charging while plugged into the Samsung adaptive charger?

    • Yes, slow charging is good for battery. But the benefit is marginal with latest battery technology. Also, if you use slow charger, you may put the phone on the charger overnight. This is not good for battery either.

Fast charging should not damage the battery. But no matter how you take care the battery, the battery will lose at least 20-40% capacity after 2 years.

As Galaxy S6 battery is non-removable for users, you need visit service centre to replace it. When approaching 2 years, you may try to replace it because availability should be an issue after 3 years. Samsung has so many phone models, I guess it's almost impossible for them to stock accessories after 3 years.

Galaxy S6 does not provide the option to disable fast charging. This is different from Galaxy Note 4, which offers you the option to disable fast charging.

Please note, fast charging is active only when: battery level is less than 50%, and screen is off. Once battery level reaches around 50%, fast charging will be disabled automatically.

Anyway, if slow charging does not affect your usage of the phone, and you do not put the phone on the charger overnight, slow charging may give you "slightly" better battery lifespan than using fast charging for your Galaxy S6. But it affects you usage, I would recommend you just use fast charging and replace the battery after 18-24 months.

      • Thank you so much. I'll surely consider a battery upgrade after 18-24 months. Thanks once again.

    • You can. But it's not good for the battery if you always do this. If it's convenient, you sold remove the phone from the charger once it's fully charged.

Anyway, don't over-react. the impact to galaxy s6 battery should not be very significant.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the usefull info.

My question is regarding battery packs; what should be the specs. of a battery pack in terms of amps, etc. that would be appropriate for the galaxy s6 edge and would not affect the battery lifespan.

Another question please, when you say improper charging may affect the battery life span significantely; how much significant compareed to the 2-3 years.

    Thanks.

    • The most important aspect of power packs for Galaxy S6 and any mobile device is the quality. Some cheap power packs may die very quickly. Even worse, some may provide unstable current, which is not good for the Galaxy S6 battery.

The capacity or output current is not so important. Of course, high capacity provides more juice, higher output current charge the phone faster.

Using power pack for galaxy S6, I think it is similar to use wall charger.

Battery lifespan is normally about 2-4 years. Some may have to change battery for Galaxy S6 just in about 12 months if you do not take care of it properly. Of course, if you charge the phone daily, you probably need change it in 18-24 months.

  • Hi Simon, last question, please give us a step by step guide the best way how to maintain the S6 battery to get the best battery life :)

    • Take it easy. Enjoy the phone.
Charge the phone only when you need it. Disconnect the phone once it is charged.
Try not to use the phone heavily when charging.

  • Hello simon!

i'd like to ask you 3 questions about the charge:

    1) i read an answer you gave to another guy on 10th april (this was his question: Does one need to charge the S6 Edge for any particular amount of time, the first time one charges it, or can you just take off charge and use it as soon as it says 100% ?):

what do you mean with “usually you need a few more mins from 100% to “charged””?

do you mean that when, after the first charge, the device shows that the battery is 100% charged i need to wait some minutes before using the smartphone or before disconnecting the smartphone from the battery charger?

    2) when i unbox the galaxy s6 will i have to charge it immediately, or will i have to make it run out of battery and then charge it?

    3) and how about the "fast charge" (the samsung uses to say that if you don't have time to wait a full charge you can charge it at anytime for just 10 mins to get until 4 hours of autonomy.

    so?

maybe the fast charge is a different thing and you're now talkin'bout the standard charge?

i ask it 'cause tomorrow i'll get the galaxy s6 and i haven't understood the differences between the standard and the fast charge.

    thank you very much!

    • 1. No, there is no specific time. It depends on the charger and thephone status. Once Galaxy S6 tells you it is charged, you should disconnect the phone from the charger.

A few mins means 100% is not equal to charged. After battery level increases from 99% to 100%, you normally should notice the status is charging, not charged. It will take a few mins to get the charged status.

Anyway, you should not worry about this because galaxy s6 will show you the notification to disconnect the charger when and only when the battery is charged.

      2. It's not necessary to charge it immediately because you may want to test the phone. In some regions, replacement is available if you can find problems on the spot. If you take the phone home, the vendor may kick you to Samsung service centre, which seldom offer 1-1 replacement.

The new galaxy s6 should have about 50% battery for you to check the phone. Actually, it's probably enough for you to setup your account and test a few favorite apps.

It is NOT good to drain the battery to 0 first time. You may drain the battery after one or two month usage. Then drain it once a month.

In short, take it easy. If you want to use it immediately, it's ok but you should not use it until 0 or 5 %. If you are patient, you can charge it to full then use it. It should take you about 1 hour to finish the charging.

      3. Galaxy s6 supports fast charging. If a capable charger (the one in box is capable) is connected, fast charging will be triggered if the battery level is less than about 50% and the screen is off. Once the battery level is close to 50%, it will be charged as normal charger.

The 10min charge for 4 hour usage is a marketing gimmick. It's for some extremely busy people who are ready to replace battery in 12 months. It's not good for galaxy s6 battery if you use it often.

  • My phone is getting very hot while charging. Even i tried it with Samsung wireless Charger. With fast charging getting hot should be normal but with wireless charging getting quite hot is not understandable. Also I tried change to normal Samsung original S4 charge with 2000 mA still it is getting hot on wireless charger.

Should i worry about battery? It is getting hot to extent that i cannot touch it to my skin after charge. Are you guys also facing same issue while charging.

I am using all original bundled chargers from Samsung. All plugged in properly as well and wireless charger kept on flat surface.

    Should i get replacement?

    • This is probably normal. It should be hot, but no that hot. Galaxy S6 has its own control system on temperature. If it is too hot, the system will adjust the charging current. Also, the charging will always getting slower and slower after about 60%.

Your old charger for S4 has similar charging current of the new charger.

If you still worry about the issue, you can try to ask a replacement if available.

  • I HAVE RECEIVED MY S6 TWO WEEKS AGO, AND THE BATTERY GOES FROM 100% TO 1 %IN 6 hours and I do not even use it in that time, MAYBE one or two messages. I have stopped all apps that is using too much battery. could you please tell me what the problem might be??

    • You need find out which app drains your battery on Galaxy S6. In Settings--Battery, tap battery usage.

  • hey simon,

i need your help again! :-P

i connected the device to the charger and waited til the battery went 100% (it took a hour). After that i noticed that the icon like a flash which shows during the charge (i charged the device without turning it on, so it was off during the whole charge) remained even after the charge had reached the 100% level; so i decided to wait 15 minutes and then i disconnected the device (but the icon was still showing at the moment i disconnected the device)

then i turned the phone on, but i noticed that the battery was fast running out (it became 83% in just one hour, without any use: i only personalized the collocation of the apps in the screen and deleted some apps)

    1) do you think this is because i haven't waited enough during the first charge?

    2) maybe i'd better charge the device again?

    3) is the notification of the completed charge shown only when the device is turned on during the charge or also when it's turned off?

    thank you again

    • First, it's not necessary to turn off the phone to charge galaxy s6. If the phone is off, you can always check the led color. Red means it's still charging. if you tap home button, you can also see the charging icon of it is not fully charged.

      1. Probably not. The battery level is not so accurate for the first a few charges. Also the booting process may use 1 or 2% of battery. You need check the detailed breakdown of battery usage. But anyway don't overreact.

      2. It's not necessary. Use the phone as usual. Charge the phone when you need.

      3. It's better to charge galaxy s6 without turning out off. If the phone is off, you can get the charging status from 1). The color of the indicator led or 2). Tap home button to see the icon on the screen. When phone is off. Of course, there will be no notification asking you to unplug.

      • thanks a lot man!

so, if, after tapping the home button, i see the charging icon even when the led is green and, right above the charging icon, is written 100%, it means the device isn't fully charged yet, or it's ok?

        that was my situation yesterday.

        • If the led is green, it means it is charged. You can disconnect the charger. Anyway, normally you will charge the phone when it is not powered off.

          • perfect!

            very last question:

(i ask it because of the fast decrease of the battery i told you before)

what do you think the autonomy of the battery during a phone call or during the use of internet (expecially when i'm using the navigation system) is?

an hour or more? (i'm not used to trust what is told by the user manual)

            thank you! :-)

          • GPS sucks battery fast. If you use navigation system continuously, can only last a few hours. But it is not necessary to turn off location service as many apps relies on it. It should consume too many battery juice unless you are using the navigation.

WiFi and mobile data also drain battery when using internet or sync data. It should have no issues for Galaxy S6 to last one day (you can get about 3-5 hours active wifi usage, with screen on. Screen actually consumes more.)

Voice call consumes battery as well. But this depends on signal strength and signal quality. In normal conditions, it should give you about at least 15-20 hours voice talk.

  • Hi Simon,

Can I use my previous S2 charger to charger my new S6 phone? What about using the powerbank to charge? Currently I'm using a XiaoMi power bank.

    Thanks.

    • Yes, you can use the old galaxy s2 charger for galaxy s6 if the old charger is still working. But it will take longer time because the maximum charging current of galaxy s2 charger is very likely 1000mA only. Why don't you just use the new charger for galaxy s6 to benefit from fast charging?

Quality powerbank should also be ok for galaxy s6.

      • i see..because i plan to leave S6 charger at home for home use while bring the S2 charger as back up to keep in the office. Afraid that it might effect the battery life if different charger is used. Taking longer time does not affect the battery life right?

        Thanks.

        • Understandable. Lower charging current actually is good for the battery. But very marginally with today's battery technology.

No matter what charger you are using for galaxy s6, it's good to let it charge to full before disconnecting. Also, you should not run heavy apps when the phone is charging.

  • Hi Simon,

I put my S6 edge on a Qi wireless charger that I have previously used with my Galaxy S4 and when I checked on it about 4 hours later it had turned itself off and the battery had discharged completely. The phone was turned on when I put it on the charger. What do you think the issue might be?

    Thanks

    • When you put Galaxy S6 edge on the Qi wireless charger, does it charge? Most wireless chargers use colors to indicate the charging status.

  • My s6 edge used to show fast charging the first 2 to 3 days but now it shows cable charging and takes 5 hours to charge..I am using bundled charger and cable and my cable fits snugly in the port. There is no room for more as a user suggested..is this a manufacturing defect???

    • it should not take 5 hours even with normal charger. You may try another cable or another charger.

Actually, you cannot see the fast charging icon except for the first a few seconds when you connect the charger. Once screen is on, fast charging is disabled.

  • hi simon, i was trying to charge the S6 with samsung wireless charger. After almost 2 hrs, it only charges about 20%. How long does it takess to finish charge? seems slower than normal charging though.

    • It depends on the wireless charger. The new one has 5.0v, 2.0A input. It should charge Galaxy S6 less than 3 hours, usually around 2.5 hours, if you use the wall charger bundled with Galaxy S6 as input for the wireless charger.

I think 2 hours for 20% is too slow. Did you check the cable connection between the wall charger and wireless charger? Do you use the bundled wall charger?

      • yeah im using the bundled charger and the wireless charger from Sansung that comes together when i purchase the phone. it seems to be very slow. checkedd the cable connection as well. there is not problem when i directly charger using the bundled wall charger though.

        • Some s6 cases or covers may affect wireless charging. You may test the wireless charging without cases.

          • I am not using any cases during charging.. it's too slow until i stop charging wireless and direct connect to the bundled charger.

          • Yes, wireless charging is slower than the wall charger (although you use the wall charger to power wireless charger).

But I can always finish charging the S6 within 3 hours with the Samsung wireless charger (5v, 2A input).

Not sure about your problem. I think only some cases may affect wireless charging.

You may write down the actual time for a few charges (till charged) with wireless charger. Then compare them with wall charger (also till charged). For me, wireless charger takes about 2 times of time needed for the wall charger.

  • Today I bought s6. I graduated from the factory charge. I started with the original charging adapter and cable at home but 3 hours was 50% battery. Is this normal first time charging ?

    • It should take less than 2 hours with the bundled charger and cable. Check the cable connection and make sure cable is inserted tightly.

  • Hello Simon,

i'd like to update you about my new "problem" :P

    1) i have just completed my 2nd charge (the firstone after the first charge which follows the unboxing) and, after the batery reached the 100% level and the led turned green from red, the device didn't show the notification "disconnect the charger" or anything similar. So, i decided to wait other 5 mins but nothing appeared, then i disconnected the device from the charger.

Do you think it's the same? White shouldn't it show the notification of fully charged?

    2) During the charge i swiped down from the top of the display the bar and i noticed that there was a kind of notification which said "use the fast charging, time left x mins" (well, i'm translating from italian, i'm not sure if the correct translation is "use it if you want" or "now it's being used").

I tried to tap the notification but nothing happend.

Do you think that the fast charge was on? (I remember that you told me that the farst charging turns off when the battery level reaches approximately the 50%)

    3) At the end of the charging process (the battery level was approximately 90%) I downloaded a system update (the last one you can download in the latest days, and that provides an improvment of the e-mail, calendar and music interface + some other things)

Do you think that i affected the quality of the charge, or anyway the device?

    Thank you, bro! :)

    • 1. If the led color is not red, it means the battery is fully charged. You can disconnect the charger. There should be a notification in the notification panel of the phone is on when charging.

      2. Fast charging is always enabled automatically on galaxy s6 when screen is off, and battery level is less than 50%, and a capable charger is connected. The notification probably means a fast charger is connected. Yes, in android lollipop, it also gives you the estimated time to finish the charge. But it's not so accurate.

      3. It should be ok. Try not to do such things "very often" when it's on the charger. Anyway, take it easy.

      • Thank you very much simon! :)

I asked you about the fast charging because it took just 1 hour or a bit more to get to 100% from 12%.

Do you think it's the correct speed or it's a too high speed (and that means the fast charging has been enabled during the whole charge)?

Anyway, you probably are right and it meant that a fast charger was connected: i was using the s6 charger (not wireless) plugged to a normal power outlet of my wall.

Is this considered as a fast charger?

About the notification of fully charged i didn't see it neither where you said, but next time i'll check it better.
Anyway, as the green light means it's fully charged, there are no matters.
Ok, i won't download anymore during the charging, since i can wait this superfast charging ;)

        • Yes, it is in normal range. Fast charging must be triggered. Otherwise, it should take 2+ hours. It usually take less than 1.5 hours when fast charging is triggered and there are not many background processes.

Galaxy S6 fast charging will be turned off automatically once battery level reaches about 50% or when screen is on. Samsung doesn't offer controls to disable it. If you really don't like it, you can just user normal wall charger or wireless charger.

Charging time also depends on ambient temperature.

Anyway, you may find the charging time varies each time.

For the notification, you can see it before disconnecting the charger.

          • ok got it.

i like the fast charging a lot. it's superfast, but i only fear that it may damage the battery if i always use the fast charging

when you say that the charging become standard after 50% level or when the screen is on, in this last case you mean that the smartphone must be turned on or that the there must not be the screen saver (my screen turns black after 30 seconds of non use)?

          • Fast charging should only marginally affect battery life. Normally, you need change battery in about 24 months.

The screen should be off (black) to take advantage of fast charging. There is no reason to use screen saver on a phone. Normally when your screen times out (you can configure it between 5 seconds and 30 mins), it should turn off by itself.

  • Hi Simon, I just receive my wireless charger. I just want to ask a simple question. Can the S6 use the fast charging while using wireless charging? Thanks for your help

    • No, for galaxy s6 fast charging, the special (bundled with your s6 already) adaptive charger must connect to the phone directly.

  • Hi simon,
i have to write here because i can't reply anymore to the last 3d.

    here your last reply:

"Fast charging should only marginally affect battery life. Normally, you need change battery in about 24 months.

The screen should be off (black) to take advantage of fast charging. There is no reason to use screen saver on a phone. Normally when your screen times out (you can configure it between 5 seconds and 30 mins), it should turn off by itself".

Sorry i didn't explain well: i don't have any screensavers, i only configured my device in order to have the screen turning off after 30 seconds

have i to avoid it to become off during the charging, if i want that the fast charging stops after the 50% level?

you mean that if it turns off (after it times out) the fast charge continues even after the 50% level?

    • Fast charging will ALWAYS stop if the battery level is close to 50%. Galaxy S6 will ALWAYS use normal charging mode after the first 50% no matter what you are doing or screen status.

When battery level is less than 50%, fast charging "may be" triggered only if 1.) screen is off 2). adaptive charger is connected and 3). battery level is less than 50%. If you turn on the screen when fast charging is being used, it will change to normal charging mkode. If you turn off screen again, and battery level is still less than 50%, fast charging may be triggered again automatically until battery level approaches 50%.

      Hope it is clear now.

  • yes!

    absolutely clear now! :) :)

    thank you very much!

and sorry for boring you all the time, but you've been really helpful :) :P :P

    bye!

  • Hi Simon,

First thank you very much for all your help and answers. They are extremely helpful and much appreciated.

My question was in regards to the advice in your article (under After Charging your Galaxy 6 battery) which stated: "First unplug the charger from Galaxy S6, and then unplug it from the electric socket."

I have had no charging issues at all, especially when using the provided Samsung fast charger (and love how fast it is). When my phone is completely charged, I unplug the charging cord from the phone but I do keep the charger itself continually plugged in to the power source (electrical outlet) so it is easier to just plug the cord back into the phone once I need to recharge it.

Am I damaging anything by keeping the Samsung provided charger plugged into the outlet once my phone is charged or should I make sure to unplug it from the wall as well?

Thank you again for all your help! This page is a wonderful source of information! Best regards.

    • It is a good "habit" to power off the charger when not in use. Wall charger does not have a power switch, so it may consume some (usually very marginal) power.

But if the power supply is not stable (e.g., large fluctuations in actual voltage), leaving the wall charger on the outlet may cause additional wear on the charger, and extreme (very rare, but still possible) conditions, it may have unpredictable consequences (e.g., fire, explosion....).

Anyway, take it easy. Just try to power off the charger if you remember it. Gradually, you will have the good habit.

  • As a proud owner of a Galaxy 6 owner my fast charging works great! From 15% to 100%
in 60min! Tip during fast charging: 1.Disconnect from Wi-Fi 2. Close all background running programs recently used. And leave your smart phone until fully charged.

    • No, it's not necessary to drain the battery completely. But it would be better if you let the battery go down below 10 or 15% once or twice each month.

It's a good practice to calculate whether you need charge Galaxy S6 before you can access charger again.

  • Hi does anyone here have experienced charging their Samsung S6 in a laptop/ desktop computer? I noticed that my phone is not charging when my phone is connected to my laptop even the phone says that it's charging. The same thing happens when I connected my phone in my car.

    • it could be slow, but it should charge Galaxy S6. You may try USB 3.0 port. Some laptops/desktops now feature a charging port.

  • Hi, after the first time charging my phone. The battery drain from100 to 92 in like 2 minutes. Is this normal?

    • it depends on what you were doing.

for battery problem, you need wait a bit longer, and try to observe it for a few charging cycles.

  • Hi Simon,

My phone usually takes abt 2 hrs to charge fully. But the battery drains out pretty fast. it goes out to 20% in 5 hrs or so. I used to have s5 before and i used the phone exactly as S6 but when i compare the battery s6 drains out pretty fast. Any suggestions?

    • You need check the battery usage in settings - battery. Probably some apps awake the phone. Tap the graph to see whether it's awaken all the time.

      • Hello Simon,
I have the S6 edge n d device fast charges sometimes which usually takes an hour n half or so.... but most of the times it does the cable charge which takes means 6 hrs... is there any solution ?? Y don't I get the fast charge always ??

        • are you using different chargers? Galaxy S6 fast charging requires a special adaptive charger (which is bundled with Galaxy S6). Fast charging will not be activated if you use a normal wall charger.

          • No I use only the charger provided by them... it cable charges sometimes n fast charges . But I happened to see somewhere that doing the fast charge has side effects n the auto rotation fails... is it true ? If so then I don't mind the cable charge until an update is rolled out from Sammy

          • What is the "cable charge" you are referring to?

As explained in previous comments, fast charging may only have marginal impact on battery life.

There are no known issues on auto rotation on Galaxy S6 so far.

  • I am planning to buy a car charger for my S6. Is there anything I need to take care with respect to the voltage/ampere/wattage etc of the car charger unit?

    • Just get a quality one. The output voltage should be 5V. The current vaires. Galaxy S6 can use up to 2A output current, but some 2.4A output charger should also work with Galaxy S6 or S6 edge.

  • How long do I need to charge my Samsung galaxy s6 for the first time? can some one please tell me
do I have to charge it for 8 hours

  • hi Simon,
I have got my S6 Edge now. While charging with fast charger, it gets heat up between 23 to 34 degree celsius temperature. Also while using the phone, it gets heat between 23-32 degree celsius temp. I tried the GSAM battery monitor app to find this temp. Is the temperature normal with this phone or do I need to go for the exchange option ? Please guide me asap.

    • It's probably normal. Galaxy S6 and S6 has its own mechanism to protect the phone from overheating.

If it has overheating problems, the phone will slow down and may shutoff or restart. If you haven't experienced such issues, probably it's not necessary to exchange.

  • I have had my S6 for about 3 weeks now and the charging ahs worked perfectly until this weekend. When I was charging it, it had stated that it was over heating and reduced the charging to compensate for that. After that my phone has been draining much more rapidly. I had it fully charged when i went to be and 6.5 hours later, I woke up and it was down to 59%. I have done everythign right with charging to maximize bettery life. What do I do now and can it be fixed?

    • You need check why the battery drains so fast in settings - battery. Tap the battery usage. You may reboot the galaxy s6 to see whether the battery drain problem is solved.

For the overheating message, probably, there are a few naughty apps running on background. If you often get the message, you may have to reset the phone.

  • Hi there.

    Thanks for the article.

Two question . Firstly, if the battery is only supposed to last 2 years how can I replace it? Normally I sell my phones on when I upgrade.

Second, the fast charger stops sending power when the battery is full. Do wireless chargers do the same? Or would leaving it on a wireless pad (like on the new ikea furniture) overnight, every night, be bad for the battery?

    Cheers
    Ed

    • 1. you have to go to Samsung service center to replace the battery, as the Galaxy S6 battery is not removable for users. The charge may vary from region to region. It should be around $40-$50.

      2. for fast charger, once the battery level reaches about 50%, it is identical to normal wall charger. It may still send minimum current to the phone. It is better to disconnect the phone from the charger once battery is fully charged (if it is convenient).

For wireless charger, there should be no current to the phone once the Galaxy S6 battery is fully charged. So, you can put the phone on the charger if it is inconvenient to remove it. Please note, although no current sent to the phone, in standby mode, the wireless charger need send signals that sense the presence of an object.

  • HI Simon,
Can you suggest me a good wireless charger pad model for my S6 Edge phone. I can see lot of models in amazon.( Wireless Charger Pad (EP-PG920I)Black for Samsung Galaxy S6 , Genuine Samsung Wireless Charger for Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge - Black (EP-PG920IBE) , Samsung Wireless Charging Pad - Retail Packaging - Black Sapphire)

Got confused which one to buy. Can you help me pls?

    • Actually, most of the wireless chargers work with Galaxy S6 edge. If you have enough budget, you can get the Samsung brand one (the round one with black or white color).

You can also get cheaper one at less than $20. But you should get a branded one with good reviews. You may try TechMatte .

  • Hi Simon

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S6. Do I need to buy a new car charger for it, or will the micro sd one I've been using on my old Android HTC phone suffice? TIA.

    Cheers, Roger.

    • No, if the old charger still works, you can use it for s6. The micro USB port in s6 is standard one.

  • Hi Simon, my phone came with the wireless charger, will it harm the battery or reduce its life if i keep the phone on it when not in use?

    • I don't think it is a good idea to use the wireless charging pad as phone holder. The battery life may be affected by frequent charging. You should put it on the pad only when need charge Galaxy S6.

It is ok if you leave it on the pad after it is fully charged.

  • Hi,
I am from India, I am buying the S6 from Australia.
I have a universal travel adapter which can convert any international type of chargers, so that I can use those chargers on Indian Wall Outlets.
So I wanted to know if I would be able to use the fast charging at my home in India with the bundled charger which come with the box when I purchase the phone from Australia

    Thanks!

    • Yes, fast charging should work. The fast charger in most regions is 100-240V, 50-60Hz. So, it can be used in most regions.

Of course, you need check the print on the charger.

  • I charge my S6 with the fast charger sometimes wireless charger overnight. So when it get 100% it still plug to the charger is it okay to leave it or should i wake up and unplug it ?

    • It is not a big deal. It is not necessary to get up at 2AM to disconnect the charger from Galaxy S6 . We are not slaves of the phones. Disconnect the charger if it is convenient to do so.

It is better to put Galaxy S6 on the wireless charger if you leave it overnight.

  • Hi Simon,

I have purchased a wall charger to charge my S6 at work. On the packaging it says the charger will 'fast charge' smartphones etc. but I've checked the maker's website and it doesn't actually say if the charger is compatible with Adaptive Fast Charging/Quick Charge 2.0 or not - is there any way of finding out? And the charger has 2 USB ports, 1A & 2.4A, with the packaging saying the 1A port is for phones and 2.4A port for iPads/tablets. Is it safe to use the 2.4A port to charge my S6?

    Alan.

    • Quick charger should have 2 output: one is 5V for normal charging, and the other is close to 10V (1.6A around) for fast charging.

Galaxy S6 should use a charger with output current less than 2.1A. To be safe, you probably should try to use 1A port. Using the 2.4A port may be not good, but it probably cause damages if the charger has good quality.

  • Hello Simon!

    Simple question:

I often read that, in order to optimaze the battery drain, one should charge his device when the battery level is among 30%-40% (better if 100% level isn't reached; 80% is preferable), and never let it fall under 15%.

Furthermore, that one should turn his device off at least once a week.

Actually, I always charge my galaxy s6 when the level is 13%-15%, and i've never turned it off since i bought it last 22th of april

do you think i can take it easy or have i to be as severe as they suggest?

    Thank you a lot! :)

    • You should charge the battery only when you need charge it. For example, you know you have no access to charger or have no time in next 8 hours, you need make sure the battery can last next 8 hours.

It is always arguable at which battery levels you should charge the battery. The common sense is that you should not charge it too often. So, you only need change the battery when you need top up. It is NOT necessary to charge the battery based on battery level: it should be based on when you can access charger again.

I think it is ok to charge it when it falls below 10-15%. 80% is from a totally mis-interpreted research, and it has almost no practical meaning. Again, you it is not necessary to charge the battery when it still has 30-40% juice (and you know it is enough before you can access charger again).

Rebooting the phone at least once a week is a nonsense. Smartphones are designed to be always-on. You need reboot the phone only when you have some problems with some apps or the phone. For example, some system processes awakes the phone all the time.

    • It is probably normal.

If it also takes abnormally long time to charge, it can be a problem.

  • My wife has the s4 and we accidentally swapped chargers. My s6 won't consistently fast charge unless I use a different USB plug with the fast charger. Even then my battery doesn't seem to be lasting as long. Is it possible that using the wrong charger could have damaged something or is it just coincidence?

  • Hi Simon,

I read all posts, great info, thanks the info.

Just a quick question, I read on some questions that you confirm that is better to wait to fully charge every time.
I bought a wireless charger for the office and the idea is charge it when I am on my desk Maybe twice or 3 times a day 1 hour each. This harm the battery?
    Thanks

    • Yes, I think it's not good for battery of you do this often. Just like eating food, it's not necessary to keep your stomach full all the time.

  • Like a few comments before, I am experiencing battery life issues that I never experienced with my S5. With a full charge and my phone sitting idle (in sleep mode), it lasts about 3 hours. I have followed all of the protocol that Samsung Support gave me: charge an empty battery, disconnect upon 100% charge, close open apps, put phone into sleep mode) and have seen no change. I have checked the battery usage in Settings and see that the biggest users are: Cell Standby at 33%; email sync 18%; Android System 14%; but I am not savvy enough to know what this means or how to fix it/whether it's possible to stop the apps which appear to be draining the battery. Any suggestions? The only help Samsung Support could give me beyond what I already mentioned was to take the phone to a service center, but there isn't one close to my home.

    • From the percentage, I can get the following info
      1. Mobile network signal in your area is not good (or you chose wrong network type. You should use auto most of the time.) you can check mobile signal strength in settings - about device - status. Signal strength is one aspect of signal quality.

      2. You are very likely using mobile data and probably the speed is not fast. What is the symbol did you get when using mobile data?

      3. You synced too many emails, or synced too frequently or the connection to the email server is too slow. What's the sync frequency setting for each email account? How many email accounts are in the phone?

How long does it take to charge your s6 battery? If it's a hardware problem with the battery, you still have to visit the service centre.

Anyway, you can first try to disable mobile data to test.

  • I have the new Edge 6 , I keep getting charging paused battery temp too low to charge. Why am I getting this message?

    • I never heard about this message. What's the room temperature? Can you turn on the phone?

Anyway, it can be due to faulty temperature sensor.

If you can turn on the phone, you can reset the phone. If the problem persists, you may have to visit local Samsung service center. If you are eligible for a replacement, you can try to get a replacement.

      • It charges even though the message keeps popping up. I can use the phone without issues thus far.it just started happening.

      • I also just started having this problem. My S6 edge is only about a week out of the box, and I have only been using the included charger or a TYLT wireless charger. It's June in New Jersey, so ambient temperature is definitely not the problem.

        • it could be due to the connector or some parts on the board. You'd better to visit local Samsung service center to check the phone.

      • Is there advantage and disadvantage of using Battery Doctor application? How about "Clean Master"? Thanks and best regard.

        • You do NOT need such apps.

Clean master was partially integrated into Galaxy S6 smart manager. Galaxy S6 got many critics on this (because clean master is not necessary, especially, the memory booster can degrade the performance of Galaxy S6).

Again, for battery saving apps, most of them are not necessary. Such apps usually cause more battery drain.

ONLY when you have battery problems, you can use some tools to find out the cause of the drain. But do not trust battery saving apps.

If you really need an app to peace your mind, I recommend Greenify.

  • Hi Simon thank you for all your excellent inputs. After reading, I got a timer to plug in my wireless charger for my S6E. I set it to 3am on and 7am off. It works wonders, dont need to wake up at 2am like you said lol. Just sharing..... for those who are really concerned of plugging the charger over night and over pushing the battery.

  • After about 1.5-2 months of purchasing my new galaxy s6, i let the battery die completely for the 1st time. i left it on the wireless charger stand overnight and found that in the morning it was not charged. I plugged it into the fast charging cable that came with my phone and left it on there for an hour. still no charge. so i unplugged it and plugged it back in. not even the little rumble feedback that lets you know its taking the charge went off.

i just brought it to my verizon store and they are overnighting me a new gs6, but any idea what happened to the battery? or how i can avoid this problem in the future with my new replacement gs6?

    • It can be caused by many factors. Sometimes, some protection mechanisms may be enabled to prevent the phone from being charged. In this case, a hardware reset is needed in the service centre.

Normally, for modern battery, it's not necessary to drain it purposely. But draining the battery completely should not be a problem. Probation, certain protection mechanism was triggered.

  • I bought S6edge a month ago.. Everythig is fine untill yesterday.. It wsa charging with 1.5hours as you mentioned. But suddenly this morning when I kept it for charging, my touch screen is not working. And when i removed charger USB, still the RED light is on.. and my phone doesn't work any more. What should I do now?

  • my gs6 fast charges when the screen is that a fault in the phone or do you think that is normal?

  • im using J1 charger for my S6, the battery doesn't last long, it last for about 3 hours and the battery is empty. what could be the problem?

    • The fast charger can be used as a normal wall charger if the phone doesn't support fast charging.

  • Are you able to charge the S6 by using both the wireless charging pad and the fast charging wall charger at the same time? So connecting the cable to the S6 at the same time it is sitting on the wireless charger?

    • No, charging through cable connection will always take higher priority. Galaxy S6 wireless charging is activated only when there is no current input from usb cable.

  • Good Day, my question is how can i turn on with sound notification after my S6 Edge was fully charged? TIA

    • Once battery is fully charged, the color of the LED will change from red to blue. No sound options in Galaxy S6 or S6 edge.

  • Hi. Just bought the S6 a few hours ago. Before I came across this site, I started charging the phone (which was switched off), thinking that was the way to charge it for the first time. Encountered ridiculously hot phone (can't even touch the sides/buttons without feeling the fingers getting burnt).

I kept trying to press the 'Power On' button but there's no response. How long do I have to charge it for, for the first time? When I press the Power On button and Home button, nothing happens. No LED indicator lit up either. Help!

    • There is an LED in the top. The LED should be in red when the battery is being charged and should turn to blue once it is fully charged. THE LED should be on even you power off the phone.

When S6 is powered off and is connected to the charger, the screen should show battery percentage if home button is pressed.

With the bundled charger, it should take less than 1.5 hours (usually around 1 hour) to fully charge Galaxy S6.

The phone should be hot when it is being charged or used for extended period. But it should not not that hot.

If you cannot turn on the phone, you may try this guide. Please read the section of "What can I do if I cannot turn on Galaxy S6?".

If you still cannot turn on the phone, you may have to visit local Samsung service center to check the hardware (such issues should be under warranty), or ask the vendor to replace the phone (if such an option is available in your region)

      • Hi Simon. Thanks for your reply. I brought it back to the shop and the staff also seemed surprised when they couldn't turn it on (tried charging it etc, no response). They gave me another brand new phone that could actually be turned on (gasp!).

  • Hello

Simple question, the wireess charger that came with my s6 edge. Does it stop charging the phone once it reaches 100%? Because I left it on there overnight and in the morning it said 70% so my guess is that it charged to 100% and then stopped charging and battery ran down by itself the remainder of the night? Or is the wireless charger so slow that it only was able to charge 70% in a duration of 8 hours. .?

    • if the battery is less than 90% next time, you can check Settings--battery--battery usage. The plot will the true story.

    • Once it's fully charged, the led color should change to green. Then it's ready to use. Actually you should try not to put your S6 on the charger once it's charged.

It should take less than 2 hours with the bundled fast charger.

  • Hi. I got my s6 Edge two days ago and when I got it, they told me to drain the battery and then only charge it. I did that but now my battery won't even last me 6 hours even if I charge it to 100%. Should I return the phone or is there an answer to this?

    • First, you should not drain the new battery. But it should affect your battery life immediately.

When you say 6 hours battery time, is it screen time? it is quite good.

You need check the detailed battery usage in Settings--battery. Without the detailed usage, it is hard to make any judgments.

  • I just got my s6edge and it wont charge from a socket. If i connect it to my PC it charges all right. Any ideas how to fix it?

    • Are you using the bundled charger? Is the cable inserted tightly? can you charge other phones with the same cable and charger?

      • Well I have just realised how dumb I was. I didn't realise we're in a middle of power outage and my laptop is working on its battery.

  • Is it ok for the battery to use a Samsung charger that came with my Galaxy S4? I have them laying around the house and would like to keep one in the living room/kitchen to charge my device.

    • Yes, you can the old charger for s6. It will just take a bit longer time to charge because the charger for s4 doesn't have fast charging.

  • The charger in my box (galaxy s 6)does not say that it is a fast charger and it does not appear to be charging fast. Does the fast charger come as standard and in all boxes?

    • Yes, Galaxy S6 and S6 edge come with fast charger. It should marked as adaptive charger. Also when it is connected to s6, your S6 should report it's in fast charging.

  • Mine has not come with the right charger, within the box I have googked d the model number on the charger and it is one for the S5. Do you think this is dodgy? I bought it off mobile phones direct .com. the imei number is genuine and phone seems to work fine but why would it have he wrong charger in it??

    • Not sure. Fast charger should be the default option in S6 box. Distributors may choose special items to save cost. But anyway, you can check with the seller on this issue.

  • It is true that you shouldn't charge the battery until it's down to under 20%? If mine its at 50%, I will charge it back up to 100% if I know I'll need a full change to get me through the rest of the day/evening. Someone told me I'm shortening the battery life by doing this. Am I?

    • Your need is always the No.1 priority. The value of the phone is how much convenience it gives you, NOT just how long it serves you.

If you know 50% battery level probably is not enough before you can charge it, you SHOULD charge it. Under this scenario, forget about battery lifespan. You need the phone to serve you. Period.

For modern battery, you can charge it at any battery levels. The battery lifespan is surely affected by the charging cycles, but not your battery levels.

So, it is NOT necessary to wait the battery level is too low. Just do not charge it when it is not necessary.

Of course, if the phone serves you well, you need try to treat it well: 1). when charging, try to wait till it is fully charged; 2). do not wait till the battery is completely drained.

Enjoy your phone. Your need is always the most important.

  • I recently got the S6 edge. A couple of days ago I also discovered it has a charging problem. If I use the original white USB cable and plug it into my USB3 port on my computer it says it'll take around 4-5 hours to charge (which is insane compared to the normal ~2 hours for full charge). After reading through the comments here and trying out different ports on my PC, I tried the original charger and plugged it into the wall to charge. It charged for ~2 hours. So I guess sometimes you might have problems charging from your computer.

    • it is normal.

Computer, especially laptop usually delivers far lower current (than the standard) to USB ports (including USB 3.0 ports). USB 3.0 ports may deliver higher current (but still it is usually lower than 900mA in the standard). But this happens usually only if an USB 3.0 device is identified. Galaxy S6 only supports USB 2.0.

Anyway, the USB ports usually only deliver lower than 900mA current. It will take 3-5 hours to charge your Galaxy S6.

In some new laptops or PC, there may be a charging port, which deliver higher current output.

  • To the many people with the following issues of 4-5+ charging times AND/OR unusual RAPID Battery draining issues. I have had both. Here are the issues.

    1) Fast Charging ( the feature..so the phone no longer says this feature is enabled when i plug in the charger) no longer works and I receive 4-5 hour charging times. When i plug in another charger, it give me a stable 2+ hours until full charge from around 20%.

    2) When connecting phone to computer via usb, the phone charges but it does not sync with the computer.

    3) Wireless charging works normally

I don't believe it is a connection issue since other brand chargers do charge for an ok time, maybe software or something else.

    4) For battery issue, in POWER SAVER mode...batter does not last me half a day. I have tried disabling apps and smart features to save power. However this was not always the case when i got the phone. The battery life was bad but not THIS bad.

easy way to check is the following way. It is advertised that on 10% battery life, setting your phone to ULTRA POWER SAVER mode will last you 24 hours for emergency purposes. I know the battery is no good because at 100%, the estimated time gives me 24 hours. So my capacity basically was divided by 10. Now before you say don't trust estimations, i charged until 100% with wireless charger and set it to ULTRA POWER SAVER MODE before i slept. Sure enough 8 hours later battery was at 40-50%. That is not normal when UPSM turns alot of features off.

This is not normal at all!!! so....I sent it to samsung... the following are the results from the :

    Original Problem:
POWER - CHARGING ISSUES - PHONE WILL NOT HOLD A CHARGE

    Problem found:
LOW BATTERY (STBY) - IF/CHARGING PORT - FWT - WILL NOT CHARGE

    Solution:
    REPLACED COMPONENT - S/W UPDATED

Now my phone has not been received yet and it is on the way so I cant say if these issues have been fixed. But they definitely found issues.... We must make Samsung aware of what is going on because other than that i love this phone but the battery charging issue is a problem i mean it just came out.

So any thoughts on this issue and what the problems in the problem found section might mean??

    thanks

    • Blackout,

Thank you for sharing this information. The same thing is happening to my phone! It was working wonderfully, then out of the blue, it cannot hold a charge and is draining extremely fast. I have:
      -shut down apps
      -closed backgrounds
-use ultra ultra power saving mode
-charged with it turned off. cannot hold the charge when its on anyway.

This change is all of a sudden and a drastic change from what I have come to expect. It is such a difference that I do all of this and it will barely charge beyond 25% after an hour, Even when it has been turned off. There is no point for me to have a phone if I cannot use the apps. I had originally thought it was due to the recent update, it seems that is when I started to notice a difference. I was unsure what to do about this issue.

Again, thank you. I am not sure work will allow me to go without a phone. However, I will go by a Samsung service center on Monday.

      Just a quick note:

If I am using my phone and it's charging at the same time, it use to charge super fast. Now, the battery is draining faster than it ever did before, whether I am using it or not.
-I am using proper charging cord.
-It is the only cord I have used.
-It is now saying that a certain app is using 103% battery life in abnormal use.
-It is the same app I have always used.

If nothing has changed on my side, what was the cause of the malfunction? Also, my cord gets hot. Not just hot, but it could burn my son hot and I have also noticed that my device feeling has started to feel hot after charging as well. I understand you said its normal, but it feels more than normal, especially with the charger not working.

Thank you for your submission and thank you to Simon for helping everyone!

    • Misskittysoftpaws,
I got my phone back, with battery pack swapped. The situation is still not fixed. I will personally go to samsung store to show them. You know, this happened all of a sudden, maybe it was an update. I got a new battery and it isn't how it was when i first got my phone. Odd indeed! Let me know what happens with you!

  • hi all,

I'm sorry as i still a bit confuse. i just got my samsung s6 & i'm charging it now for the very first time. it said estimated remaining time to fully charged is 1 hour 15mins.
since this is the first time charging, should i stop it after fully charged or should i continue?
some say no need but some says yes. if continue, how long should i continue charging it? i heard different opinion from 5 hours, 8 hours etc.
    Thanks for any valuable comment.

    El

    • Once it's charged, it's ready to use. Actually the new Galaxy S6 should have about 50% battery level for you to test the phone.

Just try not to unplug the charger before it shows "charged".

  • Hi Simon, I just got my S6 Edge and I'm loving it, can you tell me is it normal for the Battery to go from 100% to 90% very quickly? Seems to start draining almost immediately once I take the charger off? Also should you let the battery drain completely before recharging or start charging when it gets to say 10%?

    • Battery drain should not so fast. Usually, it drains slower at the beginning. Of course, it depends on your usage. You may try to disconnect the charger once the LED turns green/blue (fully charged). Do not leave your S6 on the charger too long if you can.

No, it is not necessary to always drain the battery too much. Charge it when you need charge it. You can predicate whether the battery can last till you can access the charger again.

    • it does not matter. You can use the new S6 immediately because it has about 50% battery for you to try the phone....

Take it easy, Enjoy the phone.

  • HI Simon, if i charge my s6 for 8 hours the first time. will it be ok?

and i experienced something very weird. just now when i bought my phone at 8pm, on and test there is 57%. swiched it off and place back to the box. then the next moment when i reached home about 12am, i tried to power on and it says 0% and i have to pluged in the charger to be able to on it. ... Looking under the battery, the graph shows almost a straight line from 57 to maybe 54 and immediately drop to a 0...

    57% -----
    | /
    | /
    0% /

the graph look something like this. (didnt manage to take a screen shot as it dies of awhile because i plugged it in to the comp trying to transfer the pic to comp)

    please advice me! Thanks!

    • For charging, once it's fully charged (led should torn from red to green), it's ready to use. It's not necessary to charge your new s6 for 8 hours even for the first time.

For the battery drain curve, it could be not accurate at the beginning. The software can estimate the battery capacity inaccurately. If you still have the issue after a few days, it could be an indicator of something wrong.

      • Hi simon thanks for your fast reply!

But will anything happened if i charged it 8 hours for the first time? because i heard some people telling me to charge it for 8 hours, some say no and i just proceed on doing the first way..... will my battery spoil?

thanks for the understanding on the curve. but however do yknow the reason why from 57% without any usage in box from 8pm-12am. the phone straight away died at 0% and i cant even switch it on

        • Don't worry about the 8 hours. It doesn't hurt. It's just not necessary.

For the battery drain, i am not sure. You may pay a little attention to it in next a few days. If it happens again, you'd better replace the phone if possible, or check the phone in service center. Jumping from around 20% quickly is sometimes normal due to initial battery calibration. But it should not start from more than 50%.

          • so you are saying if the first time i open from the box is 57% for the battery, i got a defect one?

          • No, it's normal. The new s6 should have about 50% battery.

What I mean is that it should drain so fast. Inaccurate battery calibration usually is usually observed below 25%.

Anyway, if it happens only once, you can forget it.

  • Hello, I plugged my S6 in today and in about 10 minutes i had a warning saying the battery was to hot to charge. Now even after its cooled off and i switched chargers it still wont charge :( it was a factory charger that did it and the phone was not hot when i plugged it in nor was it in use. Now what?

    • Try not to use the phone heavily when charging. If it's too hot, the phone has to protect itself to stop charging.

You can reboot S6 and it should charge.

  • is it fine for me to charge my phone (samsung fast charging) twice a day ?? because i use my phone a lot

    • If you use your s6 heavily, then you have no choice. Your usage should have the highest priority. It does not make sense to save $50 battery by limiting your usage of the $600+ s6.

You can replace the battery in 12 to 18 months for about $50 if you use the phone heavily. Your s6 only values less than $300 after 12 to 18 months.

Anyway, if you need use the phone heavily, I don't think you should care to much about the battery. You get back the value of your s6 only when you use the phone.

All battery have a life span. Number of charging cycles is one indicator. If you charge twice a day, you very likely need replace the battery in about 12 months.

  • I just bought my s6 edge and I have read a post that says the fast charging is really faulty for the s6 edge, unlike unlike the regular s6. He says that the fast charging heats up the battery too much that it already affects the phone's performance so he suggests NEVER to use the adaptive fast charging and just use the normal charger instead.

    Is this true?

    Thanks!

  • Hi, I just bought my s6 edge and when I received it, I started using it. Then I charged the phone up to 100%. But, then I read at the manual that I should have charged it before using. Did I mess up everything?

  • mine glaxy grand prime is not charging and not showing connection while it be connected to switch.
is the reason is that the charger is local.

  • can glaxy grand prime be charges by a local charger availible in market or its complursory that genunine or glaxy charger is must for charging

    • it is NOT necessary. If convenient, you should disconnect it from the charger once the battery is fully charged. But if you already go to bed, it does not make sense to get up to disconnect it in midnight.

      • So if I connect it to the fast charger, and sleep for like 10 hours and discount it when I wake up, my battery life won't get affected

        • the battery life may "slightly" be affected. But compared to the benefit of sleep you can get, I would say I would choose to sleep and let it on the charger (instead of getting up to disconnect it).

If you still concern about the a battery life, you can get a slow charger (with output current at around 500mA) to use overnight to minimize the damage. But I would not recommend it personally.

  • I just got the Samsung S6, and I've been having charging issues. Its giving me an error that says "Charging Paused, Battery Temperature Is Too Low". Yeah thats right i said TOO LOW. I don't get it. I dont keep the phone in a sub zero temperature enviroment it is always a cozy 72o in my house constantly. So anyways I've tried multiple chargers, and car chargers and I get the same error. Even put the phone on a heating blanket to charge it and I get (some) charge but not its full potential? Any suggestions?

    • Possible causes for the temperature too low error include:
      1. Damaged temperature sensor, especially damaged by moisture. You have to visit Samsung service center to replace.
      2. Damaged USB charging port. Do not try to repair yourself.
      3. Hardware problems with the mainboard.
      4. Software issues. You can try to power off the phone and try to charge it.

Anyway, such an issue is covered by normal Samsung warranty. You can ask them to fix it.

  • Hi. yesterday my s6 charged from 8% to 65%, and got a warning that my battery is too hot to charge. now it wont charge at all.. any suggestion? is the battery dead?

    • Did you check the cable and the charger? You can also power it off, wait a few mins, then connect to the charger.

Of course, if it still doesn't work, you probably have to visit Samsung service center to check the hardware.

  • hello!

i recently updated my galaxy s6 to the latest coh2 (no brand) firmware for lollipop 5.1.1 and i noticed that, since that moment, "google play services" is always draining battery a lot. it's among 17% and 25%. it's always on the first position in the list of battery drain.

    i think it's not normal.

    what can i do?

    thank you!

    • can i clear the cache partition through the settings menu?

otherwise, do you think that throug a wipe factory data reset it would be the same or even a better result? (i know i'll loose the apps but it doesn't matter)

      • it is not necessary to do factory data reset. Of course, nobody can guarantee factory data reset will solve the issue.

you can try to clear cache partition first. It should just take a few mins.

        • hello simon,

unfortunately, althoug i cleared the cache partition it didn't work and "google play service", at the end of the battery (it was only 16% then i charged it again), reached a new 41% draining record.

do you think i can't solve this matter, maybe because of lollipop, or do you think there are other things i can do?

          thank you very much!

  • hello there. I want to know. can I use another samsung charger for my s6 edge? a slow charger not fast charger that were given to me. does it effect my battery?

    • any quality chargers should work with galaxy s6.

the quality of the charger is important. Only low-quality chargers harm your s6 battery.

  • It is well known that both extremesides is harmful to the batteries life span. Is it possible to program the phone to stopp charging at a given percent? Like start charging at 40% and stopp charging at 75%. Do anyone know about any apps that allow you to do this programming of the phones charging?
My S6 has access to wireless charging all day, this constant 100% recharge can't be good for the battery.

  • Hi,

When i charged my S6, as usual I will disconnect the charger when it reach 100% (green LED light lit). But then today, after I saw the green LED light with the screen stated battery percentage is 100%, I disconnect the charger. Right after I disconnect, the battery percentage on the screen change to 97%. When I plugged in back the charger, it wrote charging for another 30mins to complete.

Can you advise why such things happen? Anything wrong with my battery?

    • This can happen because the battery level is just an estimation. If you always get such readings, you may need deeply (less than 5%] discharge the battery once.

  • hello simon,

i tried to do a wipe factory data reset but the problem remained the same: "google play services still keeps draining battery abnormally (before wipe data, with 10% battery left it was 41%, now, with 45% battery left, it's 22%).

maybe only murshmellow could hopefully solve this matter?

or do you think there are other ways to try?

    thank you! :-)

    • There are no known problems for Google play services on S6. very likely the problem is caused by some other apps. After factory data reset, you should not restore apps immediately as the problem is very likely due to one of these apps.

After factory data reset, you may install app gradually. Install some must-have apps first, check the battery usage for next one or two days. If no problems, you can then gradually install more apps.

Also, do not use task manager or antivirus or battery saving apps.

      • ops!

i installed all the apps immediately after the wipe data (but i do not have any task manager or antivirus or battery saving apps).

        now what should i do?

hope not to do a new factory reset... :-(

may i try to uninstall some apps?

        i've got really few apps:

        facebook
        messanger (fb)
        whatsapp
        youtube
        shazam
prezzi benzina (it means "fuel price")
        camsam
        note
        calculator plus
        voice recorder
        clipper
        airdroid
        booking
        tripadvisor
        wikipedia
        amazon
        ebay
        awallet password
        my tim mobile

        here the google apps:

        google calender
        google maps
        gmail

one strange thing of "google play services" is the mobile radio signal which is always more than 10 hours (now is 12 hours with 24 hours on battery and 40% battery left)

        thank you!

        • What's the battery usage details and battery life? You may take some screenshots and post on our facebook page.

          • It seems it's OK. 1 day standby and 3 hour screen on time are normal although in the lower range.

It seems the problem is probably related to your mobile data connection. Probably the connection to Google server is not good.

You can try to turn off mobile data when not used. Turning off sync may alleviate the problem, but it is NOT recommended.

Anyway, it seems your phone can enter deep sleep and therefore it's not a big issue.

          • thank you simon!

actually, i turned off the sync for the whole life of the battery to see if google play services would drain less battery, and, as you can see, it was useless.

Do you think it's better if i keep it turned on from now on? What is the main damage the phone can suffer in the opposite case?

In the end, it appears to be a problem that cannot be solved by a possible upgrade to marshmallow? Am i forced to live with it forever?

How one can see whether a device enter deep sleep or not?

Do you think that 3hours screen it's good but not so much? what would a higher range be?

in fact, i noticed that if i use internet (searches, websites, etc...) i drain 1% every 3 mins, while if i use settings, home screen, or small apps like calculator, note, etc. i drain 1% every 4 mins. I don't know whether it's a good thing or not.

          • To check CPU status, you can try this free app: CPU Spy.

You can try Greenify app. Select all apps you can select. Run the app to force the apps to sleep if you are not going to use the phone for more than 4 hours.

The problem is caused by one or more apps. This app is trying to hold the background data (Google services only "help" the app to hold). Of course, it is a bug, but it can be triggered on very few devices as I know.

Normally, you should turn on sync because a lot of apps need it. But you can turn off mobile data when not using it. As I know the bug is triggered only when mobile data is available. In Android 6, there will be fix related to this bug. But it does not necessity address your problem because background data management is very complicated.

For the battery life. it depends on your usage and mobile signal quality. Normally, you should get 3-6 hours screen time for normal usage.

As mentioned, the problem is not critical. Try Greenify for a few days and see whether it helps. And turn off mobile data if you are not going to use it in 1 hour or longer.

  • thank you very much for your detailed information!

and what about if i try to uninstall my apps one by one and reinstall them one by one each time i see that it's not their fault?

i basically need none of my apps now; therefore, it won't be of any disturb for me to do that.

Or do you think it would just be a waste of time?

    Last question:

    What's the mobile signal quality?

does it depends on my provider (in italy i use TIM: italian mobile telecommunication), or on the galaxy s6?

    • Normally, for most users, a factory reset would solve the problem. But it seems it is not for you as you mentioned.

Did you try CPU Spy and Greenify?

Mobile signal quality depends on your carrier and your location. Signal strength is one major (but not the only one) factor. Better signal, less battery consumption. For mobile data, it is even more complicated. Normally faster connection normally consumes less battery.

      • yes, unfortunately the wipe data reset was useless for me... :-(

i tried cpu spy following some instruction i found on line that told i had to download cpu spy, close everything with the multitasking button and in the end rest the timers of cpu spy and wait 25 mins without use the phone.

the risult was, after 26 mins, 93% deep sleep.

last evening i disabled the last 3 apps i had downloaded (trip advisor, booking, note) to se if anything would change, but this morning, when i woke up, "google play services" was 27% (8 hours before, was "only" 11%).

Now, i haven't reset cpuspy timers yet, and it shows: 90% deep sleep and 16 hours total state time.

i haven't tried greenify yet since i'd like to keep uninstalling my apps before, or is it useless?

        • if the phone can enter deep sleep state, you should not worry about too much about battery.

The percentage of battery usage by Google services should be used together with battery drain rate. For 8 hours, if the totally battery drain is less than 8% percent, you should not worry about battery drain at all.

  • Fast charging really works. I have experienced periods of non-fast charging. Anytime I checked it was because the cable was not firmly fixed.

  • My phone arrived on Tuesday. On Wednesday I charged it for the first time. Today (Friday), the battery is dead. I have not yet activated the phone. I had planned on doing this today. I thought that the charge is supposed to last for 13 days. Why did it go dead after two days of inactivity. I did not leave the charger on once it reached 100%.

    • did you setup the phone?

If you did not put a SIM card in the phone, you should set it to airplane mode. Otherwise, the phone keeps search mobile network.

Nobody can guarantee the phone can standby 13 days. it depends on your mobile signal quality and background data usage.

  • hi can you tell me can I leave my 6s edge + plus on the wireless charger all night as I don't want to damage my phone thanks in advance

    • It's OK to put your s6 on the wireless charger. It should not cause any damage Leto the phone. Wireless charging will be turned off once the battery is fully charged.

  • Please sir, I have one problem, when I charge my s6 edge (fast charging) it overheats.. someone told me that is normal, but why it takes a long period to charge by using the cable with the computer, more than 3 hours to be full, is that normal or what? please help me because I'm afraid to use the fast charging always.
And I found that batterie ends quickly, is that normal too?
    I'm waiting for you answer
    Thank you sir

    • You feel the phone is hot doesn't mean it's overheated. S6 edge has its sensors and controls to make sure the temperature is in the designed range.

If you charge the phone through computer, the current is less than 900mA. It should then take you 3+ hours to charge it. It's normal. Some computers now has a special charging port, which may deliver 1000-2000mA current.

Anyway, if you don't want to wait, you can use the fast charger provided. Just try not to use the phone heavily when it's on the charger.

  • Hi, my fast charging isn't working. I tried using my adaptive fast charger which was included in the box and I tried using other fast chargers and my indicator still says "Cable charging" and not the usual "Fast Charging". What is wrong with my phone / battery?

    • If fast charging is not working with the original charger and cable, you need visit local Samsung service center to check the phone.

  • Mine is a 3-month old Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Tried using other fast chargers but fast charging still hasn't worked. Need soonest advise.

    • it could be due to some problems with the USB port. If it always happens, you'd better check the phone in the service center.

  • what about screen on time?how many hours does it take from 100% to 20%? mine(s6 64gb) usually takes about 4:30 to 5:30 max on normal usage, like checking social apps and messaging,no heavy game ,is it normal?

    • It's normal as i know. Most users can only get 4-6 hours screen time for s6. Of course, many other factors affect battery life, especially mobile network signal quality.

  • hello simon!

i'd like to download and install the recent 76 mb firmaware update (OI9), as i heard it should improve (a little) the battery life of my s6.

just a general question: do you think one should do a wipe data reset each single time one installs a firmware update or something like that, or one can avoid to do this?

if one must do the wipe data reset, must one do it before installing, or after installing, or both times?

    thank you very much! :)

    • It is not necessary to wipe the data for minor update. Factory data reset is needed only when you get problems (and cannot be solve in other methods) after the update.

If you want to do factory data reset, normally, you do it after the update. There is no point to do a factory reset before the update.

Anyway, for minor update, you should normally apply because it may address some special issues for your phone model.

      • Thanks!

so, in this case, i can just install the update and use the device normally without any factory data reset, right?

Anyway when should i do a factory data reset? Starting from how many MB?

        • It's not necessary to reset your phone.

Only if you have problems with the phone, and the problems can not solved by other methods, you may consider reset.

    • Galaxy s6 has its own overcharging protection mechanisms for its battery. But it's not a good habit to leave your s6 on the charger because it increases unnecessary wear and tear to the battery.

  • Can i charge my s6 through charger having 1A output capacity. If yes, then how much speed will decrease in charging and how much time it would take to charge?

    • Of course, you can use these chargers. But you should user only branded and quality charger.

If you use a the 1A charger, it should take 2.5-3.5 hours to fully charged your s6.

  • i have lost my galaxy s6 fast charger ... can i use any normal charger ? will it affect my battery life? or from where can i get a genuine on?

    • Any charger should work with your s6.

But you should get a quality charger. Poor quality ones may even cause fire.

  • Does my s6 battery get damaged if I leave it charging over night? Is that a bad habit? Especially given it only takes an hour and a half to be fully charged.... Just wondering!

  • Hi Simon,

I'm using samsung S6 & original s6 charger for about 5 months now. Previously EVERYTIME when i charge the phone, it will indicate "Fast charging - approx 1 hour xx mins to fully charged"
however recently when i charge, it sometimes say "Cable charging - approx 3 hours xx mins" even if i using the same original charger.
fyi, if i off & on the charger few time, only then it will indicate Fast charging.
Does this (on off few times) damage my S6 battery life span or the charger?

    • It sounds like either the cable is not inserted tightly or the cable is not in good condition.

You can try to insert the cable tightly into the charger and the phone.

You may also try other USB cables.

    • Fast charging only works with fast charger. The 5v 2.1A is for you to charge the phone directly.

You can buy a car fast charger for around $10 in Amazon.

      • Thanks for reply simon . i saw that product in amazon. it has a lot of negative feedback .
        i think u didn't undrestand my question.
        i repeat my question:

i want buy car inverter which has AC power Outlet . then i can use galaxy s6's original fast charger in the car by connecting it to car inverter AC power outlet.

car inverter ac power outlet output is : 5v 2.1A
galaxy s6 original fast charger adaptor input is: 100v to 240v

is fast charging work or not ?

        • The inverter normally have two types of sockets.

Some sockets are just like sockets at home for your appliances, e.g., TV. You can plug the Samsung charger into this socket. Then connect the phone to the charger. In this way, fast charging should work. The charger doesn't know where it's plugged.

The 5V 2.1A sockets are for USB cables. You cannot connect your charger to it. You can connect phone directly to it without using chargers. Actually, it's designed as charger. Of course, it's not fast charging. But 2.1À output should be good enough. You need check the spec sheet and make sure one socket can output 2.1A. Some vendors use total current. For example, if there are 2 USB ports, for some vendors each can output 1.05A only even when the other one is not used. Most vendors allow 2.1À if you just use one port only.

          Did I miss anything?

  • what should be the ideal temperature after gaming on s6 edge ? i feel hot in hands after playing games for 15 mins .... is it normal?

    • You should not worry about overheating. S6 has its protection mechanisms. If it's too hot, it will automatically adjust the CPU speed.

The actual temperature depends on ambient condition (temperature, ventilation and humidity), screen brightness and type of game (CPU usage, WiFi or mobile data usage).

        • It depends on usage and individual "feel'. Most today's smartphones can be quite hot if CPU is running in full speed with heavy internet data usage. Brightness is another factor.

You cannot do much about the heat unless you reduce battery usage.

          • thanx. my s6 edge is very hot during fast charging. if i use an wireless charger, then will be my problem solve???

          • It's normal. Wireless charging usually is less efficient with lower charging current.

So it should be normally cooler. But it will take longer time to charge the phone.

  • thanx. but i think over heating may damage my phone or battery. how many time need to full charge on wireless charging?

  • what does it mean if the light on the top is red while charging and its been charging super slow

    • When you charge Galaxy S6, the LED should always be red regardless of charging speed. It turns green only the battery is fully charged.

You should use the official Samsung charger and USB cable. Also make sure the USB cable is inserted tightly in both ends.

BTW, what's the charging time? Are you using the official fast charger?

  • Read a lot of these posts trying to find out more about charging my S6 which is arriving tomorrow. Saw that you said that charging it over night is bad because i should unplug it after it says "fully charged". i have also read that Wireless charging Stops when it gets to 100% and wont charge again until it is lifted and replaced back on the pad. Would that be the best way to get it close to 100% for over night charging so i don't need to wake up at 3 am and unplug a cable? Its is the most convenient way for me to charge my phone because i hang with my kids all afternoon and start work at 6 am and have no way of charging my phone at work. or can that be damaging to my battery lifespan / damaging to phone?

    • Take it easy and enjoy the phone first.

Yes, wireless charger will cut off the current once your S6 is fully charged.

Although it is not a good habit, leaving the phone on the charger everyday may only slightly affect battery life. For normal usage, it should not be a big issue. Only if it is convenient, you unplug it. Otherwise, it is OK to leave it on the charger. It does not make sense to get up at 3AM to save $0.01.

Anyway, use the phone as you like. Charge the battery only if you need to do so. It is not necessary to top up to full all the time. Of course, it is equally bad to let the battery drain completely often.

  • After charging my phone with the adptive charger for less than 1.5 hours the battery indicated 100%. Then as i unpluuged my phone, the battery dropped to 98% instantly. Now iam charging my phone at 30% while its off and for 2 hours. Is this normal? Thanks

    • after disconnecting s6 from the charger, you may get slightly different (usually lower) battery level reading. This is normal if the difference is just 2 or 3%. But if the difference is larger than 10%, it usually indicates re-calibaration is needed.

Please note, you should disconnect S6 from the charger when it is "fully charged". "100%" is an estimation; while "fully charged" is a real physical state.

For the second part, I did not get your points. If it takes 2 hours to charge to 30% with the bundled charger and cable, it is not normal.

  • Hi can anyone tell me if it is bad for my s6 if i use my previous s3 mini standard samsung black charger?

    • Nothing happens once the Galaxy S6 edge battery is fully charged.

If you remove the phone from the pl wireless charging pad, then put it back, the charger will charge it again until it's full.

  • I see the new Qi- stand chargers, Can I use Qi to charge my Samsung S6Active?

Is there anywhere to get accesories to S6Active. Its like no one carries anything for it.

    • Yes, Galaxy S6 active, just like normal S6 and S6 edge, supports both Qi and PMA wireless charging.

The brand of a wireless charger matters. If possible, get the Samsung one.

As S6 active is not a popular model, it's not easy to find accessories. Samsung has some accessories. You can also check Amazon.

  • I have my Samsung S6 Edge for only 5 months. A few days ago I realised that the time frame which is takes to charge is taking way to long. It usual only took about an hour to fully charge and now its taking over 4 hours to charge. I went to my service provider and they told me that I should send my phone and so that they can replace the battery. Is the battery the only cause of this? Also, how much is it to buy a new fast adaptive charger?

    • In addition to battery, the usb cable, charger, and the mainboard may also cause the charging issues.

You also need to make sure USB cable is inserted tightly in both ends. This actually is one of the most common causes of the slow charging.

The fast adaptive charger should cost less than $20 in most regions. For other brands, it is usually less than $10. You should get Samsung-branded one if possible. The charger usually can be used for at least 3-5 years. You can also use other USB chargers as well. The brand and quality of chargers are important.

      • Hi Simon

My phone seems to be working fine.
Yesterday I noticed then when I went to settings and to the option battery, the heading "fast charging" was switched off. I switched it on and my phone seemed to have charged as normal.

        Thank you for your response!

  • Hey I have a Samsung s6 edge and I have been Charging my phone with a charger that is not from Samsung for about 4 months will that do something to my battery?

  • I just bought Galaxy s6 , when i turned it on the battery was 50% i drained it to 0% , so how long should i charge it? When it's fully charged or like 12hours?

    • it is not necessary to drain Galaxy S6 battery to 0%. It does NOT help battery.

Once the battery is fully charged, you can disconnect the charger. It is NOT necessary to charge the battery for 8 hours for modern smartphone batteries.

  • Hello,

There was a hardware update a few days ago ( 2nd week in October) and prior to the update I had no issues with my Galaxy S6. Since however, my battery drains at what i find crazy speed. I haven't changed any settings or anything but I did read a thread on battery issues and downloaded the app Greenify. I've put a lot of my apps on hibernation mode but still find it drains fast.

To give a little extra detail, I only use wifi, gps/location off, bluetooth off, screen brightness on the lowest possible. I can leave for work at 3pm, my cell will be at 75% by 6:30pm my battery will 44%.
I am not using my phone during this time, it's just on the desk (screen off).
It says my screen is using 43% and summoner wars (cell game) at 15%, then a bunch of other things at lower percentages.
I think the screen usage is crazy, especially since my phones not in use; I don't know if I have a faulty battery or not. ( i only got it end of July this year!)

    • if screen uses 43% battery, what's the screen on time (tap "screen" in battery usage details page)?

you can share more detailed info so that others can help you. If you need to share screenshots, you can share them in our Facebook page.

This guide may also help you read Galaxy S6 battery usage details.

  • I feel it should be mentioned, and most likely a large part of the issues with "fast charging" is that not all USB cables are equal. You must use a USB cable that is "Data" capable. Some USB cables are for one-way transmission allowing data to be sent in one direction and only capable of a "verification" signal back to the sending device. Some are for two-way transmission which allows the full amount of data to be transmitted in both directions. It is this loop back to the sending device that the fast charging uses to send a "double dose" of electricity to the capable phones.

Any easy test to determine if your using a data capable USB cord is to plug the "micro" end into your phone and the USB side into a computer or laptop. If the computer does not recognize or will not let you open your phone's internal memory, then that cable is not capable of utilizing "fast-charging".

If you always use the bundled cable that comes with the fast charger, then you should be fine, but even those can be damaged over time and need to be replaced. Make sure if you buy a new USB that it is called a "USB Data Cable" or "High Speed USB". That should fix half of the "fast charger only charges slowly" problems. The other half are that the connections aren't fully seated and a very tiny amount of the problems are traced back to faulty hardware.

Also, if you use the Wireless Fast Charging docks, make sure you are also using the Fast Charging brick with it as well as the data capable/high speed USB cable.

  • Hi
My galaxy S6 takes app. 4 hr to charge. Even if I use the fast charging adapter. Can you help me to resolve this problem?

    • Hi There. I use to have the same problem. Do the below:
      – Go to settings
      – Scroll down to the heading, battery (click and open)
      – Go down to “fast cable charging” and put it on

      Hope this helps!

  • Hello,

I have a Samsung S6 edge. Today I tried to charge with with a noname charger which produced a small flame inside the wall outlet. After that my regular wall charger didn\t charge the S6 anymore. My computer data cable doesnt see s6 anymore. The only way I was able to charge my phone was using an original samsung charger. Even so, it doesnt fast charge anymore. Bottom question: my phone has a physical problem or a software problem ?

    • The battery has its own protection mechanisms. So, it's unlikely that the battery is damaged. But you should only use a branded charger.

You can try to reboot the phone and try the original charger again. You calm also check whether fast charger is enabled in Settings- battery.

Also, you can test it with a new USB cable.

  • Hi,

I have the Samsung galaxy s6 and i was wondering if i can buy the fast wireless charger. Would it charge faster or is it the same like a normal wireless charger?

    • Oh and does it change the time of charging if i connect the wireless charger with an samsung galaxy s6 fast charger or an s7 charger.

      • Fast wireless charger can charge the phone battery at up to 1.5A current. Normal wireless charger usually caps at 1A. But both are slower than charging through USB port, which usually caps at 2A of the charger supports it. Fast (adaptive) charger can charge the phone at 9V 1.67A (instead of 5V 2A). But it only works when battery is less than about 55%.

For Samsung fast wireless charger, you must use a fast (adaptive) charger.

For Galaxy S7 and S6, there are no differences in charging or charger.

    • All smartphones will stop charging the battery once it's fully charged.

But smartphones cannot turn off the charger. So, once battery is fully charged, small current (trickling current) will be maintained.

  • When is the best time to charge my Samsung s6? I charge it any time like when it's 80% or like 70%. I heard that the battery will drain quickly if I charge it then is that true?

    • Charge the phone only when you need to change it.

it is not necessary to charge Galaxy S6 battery when it has 70%.

  • When my phone reaches 100% charge it makes a load bee noise, how do I get rid of this bee.

    • You can turn off charging sound in Settings--sound and vibration -- charging sound.

    • You should not. Although Galaxy S6 and the battery have the protection mechanisms to make sure the charging current is under control, you should not risk your phone. If you need fast charging, get an adaptive charger, which is quite cheap now.

  • Hi I'm using Samsung s6 the problem is that I connected my phone to Samsung charger then it is showing charging but secs later it's not charging it's going off and on like that it's not charging . I try with other charges it working I think that charger fast adapter it the problem so can you tell me what to do

  • Older Nickel Cadmium rechargables have memory affect but Litium Ion does not. Also it's better to have a decent charger that stops at the top than a trickle charger that stays on or never makes it to 100%. Its the heat that's bad during fast charging so if you can get the phone below melting point of water you're only limit is the imedance of the battery. It's the voltage that is more of a danger to the phone than over current. Higher voltage also leads to higher current with the same component.

  • I'm with Simon, you need to learn trouble shooting. Main rule: start with known good parts. Swap out that charger for a known good charger. My S6 Active also seems to do this though and if I run AccuBattery app I can see the current goes up and down each second or so, eg 500ma ... 1000ma..... 500ma.... 1000ma, so perhaps the S6 Active is doing something whacky there.
