How to use Galaxy S6 screen grid (to change app icon size in home screen)?

What is Galaxy S6 screen grid?

When you look at Galaxy S6 home screen, you will notice the apps are always organized in rows and columns.

We usually call this as Galaxy S6 screen grid. Each app icon occupies one grid spot. Widgets use the grid as a reference for their sizes.

You cannot move apps to random locations in the home screen.  When you try to move apps in Galaxy S6 home screen, they will have to snap to the nearest “grid”.  If you try to move one app to another app, an app folder will be created.

When you add apps to Galaxy S6 home screen or add widgets to home screen, the apps or widgets also snap to the invisible “grid” automatically.

This makes your screen clean and neat.

But it also limits the number of apps or widgets you can put on the home screen page.

Of course, you can add more home screen pages for Galaxy S6 to create more spaces.

In Galaxy S6, Samsung gives you a bit more options: you can configure Galaxy S6 screen grid to 4×4, 4×5 or 5×5.

You can essentially change the app icon size in the Galaxy S6 home screen, because app icon size is always proportional to the size of the grid spot.

This is a new feature in Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. If you are using other Galaxy devices that are older than Galaxy S6, you cannot adjust screen grid.

Please note, some third-party launchers may offer such a feature.

How to change Galaxy S6 screen grid?

By default, Galaxy S6 screen grid is 4×4. So, there are 16 spots in one home screen pages.  The corresponding app icon size usually is quit large.

You can change the screen grid so that there are 20 or 25 grid spots for your apps and widgets. The size of app icons will surely be adjusted (smaller) accordingly.

To change Galaxy S6 screen grid, please follow these steps.

Step 1: Return to Galaxy S6 home screen

You can return to Galaxy S6 home screen in different ways.

Please note, it is NOT necessary to return to the Home panel of the home screen. You can return to any of the home screen pages.

Step 2: Enter Galaxy S6 home screen edit mode

Tap and hold (see this guide on using Galaxy S6 touch screen) any empty locations on the home screen as shown below.

This will bring  Galaxy S6 home screen  into edit mode as shown below.

In Galaxy S6 home screen edit mode, you can customize the home screen:

To change Galaxy S6 screen grid size, tap Screen grid as shown below.

Step 3: Select screen grid size

Galaxy S6 offers 3 screen grid sizes: 4×4, 4×5 and 5×5.

You can choose one of them. For example, you want to put maximum apps in one page, you can choose 5×5, which offers 50%+ more  spots.

Tap  5×5 as shown below.

Step 4: Apply the new Galaxy S6 screen grid

After selecting Galaxy S6 screen grid size, you must tap Apply as shown above.

If you don’t tap apply, nothing changes.

After tapping Apply, the new Galaxy S6 screen grid will be applied immediately as shown above.

Now, you can put up to 25 apps (app folders) in one home screen page as shown above.

Of course, the size of the app icon will become smaller.

Can I change Galaxy S6 screen grid for Apps screen?

Galaxy S6 screen grid is for home screen, not for Apps screen  yet.

So, you can only change app icon size in home screen. The number of apps (and app folders) in apps  screen, and the size of app icons, cannot be customized in current TouchWiz launcher.

Maybe, Samsung will bring this feature to apps screen in Galaxy S6 and  Galaxy S6 edge in the future. But Android 5.1 update for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge didn’t offer this yet.

Can you use Galaxy S6 screen grid on your Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge now?

  • My Samsung S6 edge does not respond when I tab and hold the home, if I select "Edit: at the top right corner, it change but the only option available is to delete the icons, every icon has a (-) on a corner, but the scree grid option is not there.

Hope you someone can help me

  • I cannot access the screen grid option. When I long press on a home screen the only options/buttons I'm shown are Wallpaper, Widgets, and Settings. When I first got the phone I know it was there because I'd played around with it. But when I switched Theme it reverted back to the 4x4 and took away the Grid option. I've since decided I want the larger grid more than the pretty theme, but even though I've switched back to the default theme I don't have access to the Screen Grid option. Advice?

  • Is a registered simple card required, I cannot access the grid options from the home screen, have tried everything. Theme is set to default.

Please help before I through this phone out the window :)

  • Not able to come back from app screen to home screen.
Please help because the icons are huge. I had downloaded holo launcher and so the issue happened. Even after deleting holo launcher yet the app screen is on.

    • Home button?

Did you actually switch back the launcher? You may need reboot the phone.

If you still have problems, take a screenshot, and share it in our Facebook page.

      • I had the same problem and I used these steps to get back to the home screen from app screen and it worked.

        Open the Settings app
        Tap Applications
        Tap Default applications
Tap Home and then select the launcher you’ve chosen

  • Go to Settings/Display and switch from Easy Mode to Standard Mode. Then it'll work ;-)

    • Is there any way of shrinking the App size in easy Mode or do you have to be in standard mode to change the Grid.

  • When I go through the above steps the 'Screen Grid' option is there, but greyed out so I can't click on it. The widget, themes, etc are all white and I'm able to change those, but not the grid options.

  • How to make the indicator icons at top of page larger? Your grid instructions do not work for the indicator icons. Changing the font size, in the settings "display & wallpaper", does not apply to the indicator icons either.

    • The size of the status bar is fixed, and the size of the icons in status bar is also fixed. There are no settings for you to customize them.

  • Each time I turn my phone off then back on the screen grid changes back to the size it was set at before I changed it. Once I change it everything is good until I shut my phone off. If you can help?

  • Having same problem as Eric Galario-Guzman. Each time I apply my screen to 4x4 it will automatically return to 4×5 anytime my phone is restarted or my battery dies. I didn't have this problem until a few months ago. Has anyone found a solution for this issue yet?

    • Sorry about the incorrect name...Auto-correct changed it and I wasn't aware. Name is supposed to read 'Eric Galassi'.

    • Not sure about this issue. It could be caused by third-party apps. Did you run any third-party task manager apps, or storage clearing apps?

  • I don't the long hold so my icon grid sizer will come up but it doesn't work what can I do to fix my icon size please help

  • Yes thank you this has made me frustrated all weekend its the only solution thats worked!! Very much appreciated

  • Thank you thank you thank you! I know, still using the s6 seven years later. Ugh. Now can you fix my "can't make or receive calls or texts, but still have data/internet" problem? LOL. I'm losing my mind. funny, not funny.

    • Is it an error message? or the behavior of the phone.

You can check the SIM card status. The icons on the status bar usually give some hints. You may share the screenshot with the status icons on our Facebook page so that we can have a look..
