How to use Galaxy S8 camera app?

Samsung used a new Galaxy S8 camera app in Galaxy S8 and S8+ with an revamped interface, Bixby vision integration, and supports for more gestures.

The interface of Galaxy S8 camera app interface looks similar to that in Galaxy S7 with Android Nougat update.

This Galaxy S8 camera guide will explain to you how to use Galaxy S8 camera app, and how to use touchscreen gestures in Galaxy S8 camera app in Galaxy S8 and S8+.

When you launch Galaxy S8 camera app in Galaxy S8 or S8+, you will first get the Galaxy S8 camera preview screen as shown below.

Please note, you can use Galaxy S8 camera quick launch to get this interface directly without tapping the camera app icon.

Galaxy S8 camera preview screen is the centralized interface for using the camera in Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

1.  Shutter button

Tap the shutter button (marked as 1 in the screenshot below) to take a picture.

Please note, in Galaxy S8 camera, you can also enable a floating shutter button in addition to this fixed button.

You can also slide (right and left)  the shutter button to zoom in and out.

2. Video recording button

You can start to record a video by tapping the video recording button (marked as 2 in the screenshot below)

Once the recording starts, you can pause or stop.

You can also take photos when recording.

3. Gallery shortcut button

You can access Gallery app directly by tapping this Gallery app shortcut button (marked as 3 in the screenshot below).

By default, the thumbnail of the latest photo will be shown in the preview screen.

4. Animated filters button

Galaxy S8 camera app allows you to choose from 34 stickers and 50 stamps for your photos.

You can tap the animated filters button  (marked as 4 in the screenshot above) to use these filters, stickers and stamps.

5. Beauty button 

Beauty button (marked as 5 in the screenshot above) allows you to change the tone of your skin.

6. Bixby vision button

As mentioned in Galaxy S8 new features page, Samsung tried very hard to integrate it is AI interface into Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Bixby vision is part of Bixby.

When you tap the Bixby vision button (marked as 6 in the screenshot above), Bixby will try to recognize the object in the preview screen and give you relevant info, for example, the name of the animal, the price of the bag in Amazon.

You can also press the hardware Bixby button to get Bixby vision when you are using Galaxy S8 camera app.

7. Galaxy S8 camera app settings button

You can access all Galaxy S8 camera settings using the settings button (marked as 7 in the screenshot above).

8. Flash button

Galaxy S8 camera flash button (marked as 8 in the screenshot above) lets you activate or deactivate the flash for rear camera.

When you tap this button, it will toggle through three flash options—on, auto, or off.

9. HDR (ruch tone) button

HDR button (marked as 9 in screenshot above) allows you to enable or disable HDR mode for Galaxy S8 camera.

This essentially enables the light sensitivity and color depth for the Galaxy S8 camera sensor to produce a brighter and richer picture.

10. Camera switch button

You can switch between front and rear cameras in Galaxy S8 and S8+ with camera switch button (marked as 10 in the screenshot above).

You can also switch between the two cameras with a gesture: swipe upwards or downwards. Read on.

11. Modes, camera, and effects panel indicator

In Galaxy S8 camera app, there are 3 panels in the preview screen from left to right: camera modes, camera, camera effects.

By default, you are in camera panel when you launch the camera app in Galaxy S8 and S8+.

You can swipe right to change the camera shooting mode and swipe left to access and add an effects filter.

You can also tap the small dots (if your finger is not over-sized) to switch to any of these panels.

How to use gestures in Galaxy S8 camera app?

As mentioned above, you can use gestures in Galaxy S8 camera app to access some features.

Actually, a few Galaxy S8 camera features can only be accessed through gestures.

For example, you can access Galaxy S8 camera modes and camera effects can only through gestures.

Here are the 4 touchscreen gestures you should know (as shown in the picture below):

  1. Swipe left to access  Galaxy S8 camera effects.
  2. Swipe right to access Galaxy S8 camera modes.
  3. Swipe up/down to switch between front and rear cameras.
  4. Slide the shutter button to zoom in and zoom out (not shown in the picture).

  • this camera might be outstanding but there .does not seem to be any usable coherent instructions for it. The few you can find are self contradictory. But if there in fact are some somewhere, pl advise where?

    • What do you want to do/get? Nowadays, smartphones are used in many different scenarios. It is impossible to have a guide covering all usages. Normally, you have to search for what you want to get, or a specific question.
