This Galaxy S8 Android Oreo update guide explains two of the frequently encountered new status icons in Android Oreo update forGalaxy S8 and S8+: data saver icon and no preferred SIM card icon (for dual-SIM versions of Galaxy S8 and S8+ only).
Please note, these two new status icons can be found in all Samsung Galaxy S, Note, and A series phones with Android Oreo update. They are not limited to Galaxy S8 or S8+.
As mentioned in the new features of Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8 and S8+, Android Oreo update brought a new version of UI: Samsung Experience 9.
In addition to changes and improvements in some features, Samsung also updated some icons, including the status icons.
Most of the updates of status icons in Android Oreo update are trivial. They are either similar to corresponding icons in previous versions of Samsung Experience (TouchWiz), or similar to those in the stock Android.
But there a few exceptions. Some of the new status icons are substantially different from those in the old versions or in stock Android
For example, Samsung used a new status icon for data saver in Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8 and S8+.
Samsung also added one more icon for preferred SIM card when you choose to select SIM card when making calls (for the dual-SIM version of Galaxy S8 and S8+ only)
The icon shown on the left is the new data saver status icon in Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8 and S8+.
Ths icon indicates you turned on data saver in your Galaxy S8 or S8+.
Data saver has been a core feature since Android Nougat as explained in this guide. In Android Nougat, Samsung used the stock Android icon as shown in this post.
In Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung decided to use own data saver status icon.
The data saver will reduce the mobile data usage for Galaxy S8 and S8+.
When WiFi is off, the background data transfer (using mobile data) is limited or prohibited for most apps, including system apps. Most apps can use mobile data only when you open them.
Therefore, you can expect the following from the data saver:
You can enable or disable data saver in Galaxy S8 and S8+ through Settings — Connections —Data usage — Data saver.
In Galaxy S8 settings page, tap Connections as shown below.
Tap Data usage (marked as A in the screenshot) in connections page as shown above.
In Data usage page, you can set a data limit so that you will not exceed the data quota of your mobile plan.
You can also set a warning when the mobile data usage in Galaxy S8 or S8+ is reaching a certain percentage of your mobile data allowance.
You can also suspend mobile data if your data quota is reached to avoid expensive overcharges by your carrier.
If you need to turn on or turn off data saver for Galaxy S8 or S8+, you can tap Data saver as shown below.
In the data saver page, as shown above, you can find the switch to turn it on or off.
It also explains what data saver does:
Data saver helps cut down your data usage by preventing some apps from sending or receiving data in the background. Apps that you’re currently using can use mobile data, but may do so less frequently. For example, images may not be shown after you tap them.
You can choose to enable or disable data saver based on your needs and data quota in your mobile plan.
Before the Android Oreo update, the status icon will be a SIM card icon with the number of 2 if you set preferred SIM card to SIM card 2.
If you choose SIM card 1 as preferred SIM card, or if you choose the “Ask always”, the icon will be a SIM card icon with the number of 1.
Now in Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8 and S8+, a new status icon for the no preferred SIM card option was added.
You can change preferred SIM card in Settings —Connections — SIM card manager.
In the connections page shown above, tap SIM card manager (marked as B)
In the SIM card manager page, tap Calls under the Preferred SIM card as shown below.
Then you can set the preferred SIM card for calls.

There is a folder beside one of my contacts and it looks like its a locked folder. What does this mean? Why is this contact the only one with that on there? I wish I could send you a picture but I dont see a way to.

Since the new update yesterday none of my weather apps work. Tried uninstalling, cleared everything, forced stopped, reinstalled, no radar of any kind now works. Absolutely HATE THE NEW ICON LOOKS!!

Has anyone noticed the battery draining rapidly fast after last update?
Actually, we got a better screen on time after the Pie update (I guess you are referring to this). I remember the Oreo update does not change much on battery life.
First, you should try to clear the cache partition.
Also, in Android Pie, the adaptive battery works very well. You should enable it in Settings --Device care -- Battery -- menu key (3 vertical dots) --settings --Adaptive battery. You may also enable put unused apps to sleep.
