How to bypass device protection in Android Lollipop 5.1 when you do a factory data reset?

Update: added 2 sections at the bottom on how to actually bypass device protection for Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+,  Note 5, LG G4 and LG V10 (RootJunky method)

  • Use USB OTG drive to bypass factory data reset protection on Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note 5 without knowing the old Google account.
  • How to bypass factory data reset protection on LG G4 and LG V10 without knowing the old Google account.

Device protection is a new security feature in Android Lollipop 5.1. It protects your Android phone from unauthorized access.

If the thief tries factory data reset, he cannot set up and use it without your Google account, as shown below.

But this security measure may cause problems when you want to sell the phone or pass the phone to others legitimately.

This Android Lollipop guide will show you how to bypass device protection so that you can safely pass your phone to others after a factory data reset.

Why Android Lollipop 5.1  requires the Google account used before the factory data reset?

The device protection in Android Lollipop 5.1 requires you to authenticate yourself for the setup with an existing Google account on the phone before it is reset.

This step cannot be skipped. This is different from a new phone. For a new phone, you can skip the step.

This means if someone steals your phone and does a factory data reset, he still cannot set up or use the phone unless he can log in with your Google account.

It is a legal requirement in some regions. For example, in California, phone manufacturers have to offer theft protection: lock the phone until the user can authenticate himself.

This is often referred to as the kill switch. Android Lollipop 5.1 is the first Android OS that meets this legal requirement.  All later Android versions (for example, Android Marshmallow 6.0) will have this feature.

The way to prove you are the owner of the phone before the factory data reset is to log in with your Google account that was added to the phone before resetting.

This is surely one of the most welcomed security features.

When you may want to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1 when you do a factory data reset?

Like many other security features, Android Lollipop 5.1 device protection may cause some inconvenience for legitimate usage if you do not understand how it works.

You may want to  bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1 when you do a factory data reset in some situations, for example,

  • You want to sell the phone to others.
  • You want to pass the phone to friends or kids.
  • You just want to make the factory data reset simple.

Luckily, as  the owner of the phone, you can have many ways to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1.

How to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1 when you do a factory data reset?

Device protection in Android Lollipop 5.1 is enabled automatically when the following two criteria are met:

  1. There is at least one Google account on the device.
  2. The lock screen security must NOT be none or swipe.

There is no option to disable device protection on the phone.

But if any one  (or both) of the two conditions is not met, device protection in Android Lollipop 5.1 will be automatically disabled.

In other words, you can try any of the following tricks so that you can bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1 BEFORE you do a factory data reset:

  • Remove all Google accounts on the phone before the factory data reset.
  • Set lock screen security to none.
  • Set lock screen security to swipe.

So, actually it is very simple to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1 when you do a factory data reset.

Why the device refuses to accept my Google account, although I can log in on the PC?

First, make sure the Google account exists on the phone before the factory data reset.

If you change your Google account (e.g., password), you cannot use this Google account to unlock the phone within 72 hours.  This is another chained security measure for compromised Google account together with stolen phones.

The 72-hour duration will start from the time you make changes to your Google account.

If you are caught in the 72-hour jail, you can relax and live a better life without a smartphone, for 3 days.

Someone articles say I can turn on “OEM unlock” in developer options to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1. Other articles say I need turn on OEM unlock to activate device protection.  Which one is correct?

No, both are totally wrong.

First, it is NOT necessary to touch developer options to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1. You can use the tricks mentioned above (removing Google account, or reset lock screen security) to disable device protection.

Second, enabling or dis-enabling OEM unlock does NOT change the device protection settings.

Third, if you enable OEM unlock, you will open a backdoor for the thief, but device protection is not deactivated.  By default, the bootloader in almost all Android phones (except some developer editions) is locked. The OEM unlock, if enabled (turned on),  allows the developer to unlock the bootloader and flash the phone as they want.

In short, if OEM unlock is turned on, and if the thief is smart enough, he may unlock the bootloader and flash the phone with custom ROM so that device protection will not work anymore. But if the thief is not so smart and just tries factory data reset, he still needs your Google account to proceed.

Therefore, you should NOT turn on OEM unlock unless you want to unlock the bootloader and flash the phone.

Please note different Android phone vendors use different bootloaders. And some vendors keep it hard to unlock; some make it unlockable.

FAQs on how to bypass device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1 when you do a factory data reset

#1.  What is main Google account on Android devices?

In Android, the first Google account added to the phone is considered as the main Google account or owner account.

You can add many more Google accounts to the phone. All these Google accounts are treated as “others”. Please do not confuse users with accounts in Android (if you do, please check this guide).

It is up to the individual app whether multiple Google accounts (profiles) are accepted. Almost all apps from Google support multiple profiles.  For example, you can switch to different Gmail accounts, different Gooogle+ profiles, and different Google drives.

The major difference between the main Google account and other accounts is that you cannot delete the main account if other accounts exist. In other words, the main Google account must be the last one if you want to delete all Google accounts on the phone.

Another difference is that you can delete other Google accounts without providing the password. But for the main Google account, you need to type the account password before you can remove it.

#2. Can I manage device protection through Android device manager?

No, there is no way to “manage” device protection on Android Lollipop 5.1. It is always enabled or disabled automatically, at least for the time being.

Android device manager (and the app) allows you to locate your device, lock your device and wipe your device remotely.

#3. My phone does not allow me to change SIM card, but it does not ask for Google account?

The SIM card lock is part of the security feature of some Android manufacturers. You need to check with individual manufacturers.

For Samsung phones, you can try FindMyMobile service.

#4. Why I cannot set lock screen security to none or swipe?

If you find none and swipe are grayed out in lock screen security settings, it usually means at least one of the following:

  • You have a VPN account on the phone.
  • You have an Exchange email account on the phone.
  • You have encrypted the device.
  • You installed third-party or self-signed SSL certificates.
  • Your phone was set up by your IT department.

  • Hi I am a store manager at one of a cellular stores in Canada. One of my staff returned a LG G4 back from a customer as they wanted to get an iPhone. My rep forgot to wipe of the phone and customer left and later in the day we found out that it's not wiped and had a pattern lock in it. So we did a hard reset on the phone and now we ended in the same problem as mentioned above under device protection. Every time you turn on it wants us to add the original google account which was used to sign in. I have contacted customer couple times and added his two google accounts and password but it keeps on looping into same mode. After asking again and again customer is saying that they never added a gmail account but added a yahoo account. So in this scenario I think device protection got activated as customer had a pattern unlock. Kindly can you please help and advise how can I get out of this problem as we need to resell that product. Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Sunny

    • As I know, device protection will not be activated if there is no Google account before factory data reset.

If the Google account was changed in last 72 hours, you cannot use that account. There is a 72- hour ban for Google account changes.

If Google account is not available, you may check with LG to unlock the boot loader and flash the phone. Most vendors have some ways and tools for such things.

      • Simon I followed your step for Lg G4 I got to the step on the talk back screen my settings is not highlight..I'm stuck please help got this phone on line and I can't return it and the dealer doesnt have the account information.. Thanks in advance. A.Ford

          • Hi
I just bought a phone from someone and I didn't know about the protection sign in with gmail. And the person I bought it from doesn't remember his gmail info. I started doing what is on your video but I got stuck as well at the setting option not being light up. Did you find another way, since your video was made, to bypass the protection sign in?
            Thanks

      • sure sound confident, i have tried using flash tools and i even changed the carrier from metropcs to tmobile totally new firmware and os and it still shows this bs

  • I found a galaxy S6.Edge and i did Factory Data Reset but now it askes me for the old users gmail ... any way i can get pass this to get the phone running again?

    • No, you cannot. You must activate the phone with the old Google account. This is the purpose of device protection.

If the boot loader is unlocked, you may try to flash other firmware. We do not discuss such topics in this community.

  • It defies all logic (to me, at least) that my fingerprint is insufficient to unlock my phone... Galaxy S6. Also, how is it that this is the first mention of the 72 hour requirement that I have come across? I have been losing my mind, changing my account time and again, whereas I could have just relaxed and waited for the period to expire! Google sucks, big time.

    • The device protection feature is to partially meet the legal requirement of kill switch in a few regions. It may help curb the increasing smartphone theft cases.

The 72-hour ban is another layer of protection in case Google account is compromised as well.

Anyway, Google and Android vendors could have done better to let devices owners understand this feature better. It seems Google only announced this featured for lollipop 5.1. Most Android vendors even don't mention this important feature.

      • Thanks for the article! This is the first page where I have found sound information regarding the 72-hour lockout. Sprint told me there was something wrong with my phone and that I needed to call Samsung. I decided to look on the internet before sitting on the phone for another hour and a half with a tech support person who is clueless to the root issue. I'm glad I found this page! So helpful. Thanks again! It wasn't all bad not having a phone for 3 days and the time flew by. I am down to just 11 hours and counting! :)

        • You will find the phone probably is not essential and you can have more time for outdoor activities.

          • True! I'm also having trouble with my android device on the same issue and I keep on trying for several times only to find out that mine it was not the main account.

  • i bought a brand new tablet that run's android 5.1 version unfortunately the device had a problem it hang up so i decided to factory reset the device but when i am trying to re entered the account it wont work, is there any way to solve this problem i encounter? thank you for any help i can hear from those who already encounter same as mine that will be great and really appreciate it.
just to be clear this problem is for my client i want to help her out about it

    • As explained in this guide, you need use the Google account that existed on the device before the factory data reset.

  • I recently changed my google password because it was getting old. I then factory reset my device 2 days afterwards due to performance issues. I wasn't aware of the 72 lockout period at the time. Do you know if the 72 hour lockout period begins at the time of the password change, or at the time of the factory reset?

Thanks in advance for the help.

      • what if its been over 72hrs (not much, but I'm at about 73hrs since pswd reset) and i still get the loop on the phone?

        • Did you turn on 2 step verification for that Google account?

Also make sure that Google account did exist on the phone before factory data reset.

Maybe, you just wait a few hours more.

          • Dear simon, i made factory reset 4 day ago (8th) and still i can't log on my phone. But During this 4 days i change my pass a few times. Last time today. So i should waitnig another 72 hours, started from today? And which password wil be correctly? My Old pass from 8th or today's pasword? Many thanks for help!

          • Your account only has one active password. This is the one you set last time. You have to wait 72 hours from last account modification.

          • Sir Simon, what if two-step verification was turned on, do i have to turn it off or not necessarily?

          • Normally, you should not change Google account settings if you can use the SIM card on other phones temporally. If you change the Google account substantially, you cannot use that account too unlock the phone for about 72 hours.

  • I bought a galaxy s6 phone off of craigslist and found out i have to verify the account what can i do to bypass it ?

    • No, you cannot. It's an anti-theft feature. You should contact the seller to unlock it for you. He should remove his account from the phone before resetting.

    • There are no ways to directly downgrade Android. You can flash the ROM in service center if the phone is not locked.
If the phone is locked, you can flash the phone only if the boot loader is unlocked.
Anyway, device protection is a security measure. If you are locked out of the phone, staff in service center will not be able to help you for legal reasons.

      • hi, i recently added a pattern lock to my phone due to way to many accidental calls being made out..a.k.a butt dials. of course i forgot my pattern, just lik i see to forget passwords all the time..anyway i did a factory reset on the phone, (had no idea about all this protection stuff), after i did the reset i am stuck on the verification screen statig original google account.i changed my password to my gmail as i do every couple of months. BUT my problem is when i bought this phone new..i believe i chose the option to SKIP adding a gmail right away..so i dont know what to do..if i enter my gmail and password (they are correct) it takes me back n says to put in the administrater or original account..but i dont know if thats my gmail or what!! PLEASE HELP!! so frustrating!

        • If there was no Google account on the phone when it was reset, it should not ask you to reactivate the phone.

You can check all devices related to your Google account in your Google account area (https://accounts.google.com/ ). Under sign-in & security- Device activity & notifications, you can click review devices.

As mentioned in the post, if you change Google account details, you can use that account after 72 hours (since you made the change, NOT from when you reset the phone).

        • U forget the part about when the gmail account is stolen, and either the password is changed, the email address is altered due to thief, in this case of the email.not the phobe , it can be added to paid google sevice, ur oage has correct.info just not correct scenarios....but hey who am I to tell u , ur the self appointred mayor of morality, quite funny I know of a similar situation and while huffing and puffingabt what a guy I know should do this mayor is committing several FELONIES in the nmE if upholding the law and protecting ppl, wait.....what....idk well its actually damn near reqirrment of th is mans profrssion. Oh well we will just have to hooe the mayor doest di any hamr to himself from all thise LEDS nad RF

  • I just bought a Galaxy Core Prime from MetroPCS. I made a new Google account, but didn't write it down, as I figured I would remember it. Well, I did a hard reset and for the life of me I cant remember the google user name account that I made. Ive been locked out of the phone for over a week. How do I get past this device protection thing of Googles.

    • No way, officially. If you just forget password, you can reset Google account password with you alternative email or phone. But if you forget Google account user name, then nobody can help.

Please note, if you manage to reset the password, you cannot use that Google account to activate the phone within 72 hours.

  • So thanks google, just wasted a few hundred bucks and can't use a phone I just bought... When did you become Apple?? This is junk and makes me want to go back to a WINDOWS PHONE.. YOU HERE ME GOOGLE???!?!? i'm willing to go to WINDOWS!! gahh!!!

    • Sorry to hear that. Why can't you login with your Google account? The similar feature is available in new windows phone as well.

If it's a used phone, you should check with the seller to make sure it's from a legal source. It has nothing to do with Google.

If it's a new phone, there are no such issues at all. Actually, this feature is to protect you as a legitimate owner.

      • I know it's a theft protection thing. I'm locked out of my new phone and need to bypass the device protection on the phone

        • What it asks is simply your Google account to activate the phone after a factory reset. What's exactly your problem?

    • Same thing happened to me with the galaxy s6 edge plus phone $700 phone and I can't use it. I had try everything I can from calling Google, Samsung, verizon etc.....and no one is able to help me. I totally hate this phone now and all this new technology!!!! I'm going to take this court and complain about it cuz it is not fair that I can't used my new phone for a minor error that BTW no one explained to me when I purchased this peace of shit.

      • You need use Google account to trigger this feature. Now, you just use the same Google account to activate the phone after factory data reset. What's wrong with your Google account?

        • i have a xiaomi and a samsungj7 and i am locked out of the samsung, both phones are linked.when i put my google pass into the samsung it unlocks my xiaomi not the samsung

  • Hi my name is Gavan. Yesterday i bought a Sony Xperia Z5 compact. i got it from a good price on the Internet (350 euro's). The first thing i did was doing running a factory reset. When the installing was finished got a menu where i can choose country etc. the next thing was i had to enter a mail address and i did not know that i needed the email address of the previous owner... so now i locked out of my new phone... i also tried to contact the seller but i don't get a response from him..

can someone please help me out???is there a option to bypass device protection after doing factory data reset?

    gr Gavan

    • Unfortunately, only the previous owner can unlock it officially. If the boot loader is unlocked, you may flash the firmware. We do not discuss this in this community as it may brick your phone.

For 350 Euro, you can get a new Moto X or even Nexus 5x. Buying used phones can be very tricky.

  • dear Simon, This is my trouble

My sister live in the US, she help me buy 2 nexus 6p phones ( one black color and one white ), she install viber on the black and call me ( to test the phone ) - it is ok - she add the password in both phones and send them to me ( i live in Viet Nam ). when i receive the two phones, because of she give me the wrong password and i try many times on these phones so they are locked.

I do a hard reset on the white, it works as normal - but with the black phone - when i do the hard reset - it as me for the original owner's account - i ask for my sister and she did not remember what account exactly she add into the phone, she give me her two google accounts ( with password ) and i add into the phone but it is not accepted. i log in that two accounts to check the android device manager and see that none of them manage the phone. After many times contact with my sister i found some thing very strange that she use an Yahoo mail account when install the Viber and the Play store accepted for this

I use my pc with Chrome browser to open the gmail login page and type her yahoo email ( including the name@yahoo.com ) + password - and gmail log me in and show her very old Gmail account page ( this account is not these two above and she did not use for a long time because she lost the password ) and i think this gmail she do something so it link with her current yahoo account. I open the android device manager and i found that this her old gmail account is manage a nexus 6p black active on 10-NOV-2015 , i try to communicate with this nexus 6p phone but cannot

i change to the white phone active it with my gmail account - install some application - working normally - do a hard reset - it ask for the owne's google account - type my gmail + password - active the phone again - every thing is ok

next step, i use the white phone ( working normally ) - add her yahoo mail address + password and accepted by the play store - install some applications - working as normal

i use my pc to open gmail login page - type her yahoo mail address + password - gmail page accepted this and change me to her old address gmail page - i login android device manager - and now i see both the black and the white nexus 6p phone - try to communicate but only the white respone

with her old gmail account still in the white phone - i do a hard reset on it - now the white phone also ask me for "owner's account for this phone ... " i type the yahoo mail + password - not accept - i type her old gmail account + pass - not accept

Now i have two brick nexus 6p phone

    please help

    • Thank you for sharing the story. It would be better if you can feedback this to Google for an investigation.

For the white phone, if your gmail account was on the phone before the reset, you should be able to unlock this phone with your Google account. But if you remove your own Google account from the phone before resetting, of course, you cannot use it then.

"Google account" does not mean a Gmail account. You can register a Google account with any email. A lot of people use non-gmail emails for Youtube.....

Anyway, always use your normal gmail account. If you want to reset, you can try to remove all accounts, or do not set lock screen.

      • dear simon

my problem i think is not because i lost my phone original account, i think when i setup the new phone google allow me to type in a yahoo email ( which is link to a hidden gmail account ) to setup for the play store, but when i do the hard reset google not recognize the hidden gmail account behind the yahoo account ( i tried both yahoo and gmail account did not help ).

i think any one who use device with android 5.11 and higher and type the yahoo mail ( which is link to a hidden gmail account behind ) when setup the new phone to declare for the play store will be accepted and face with this problem when do a hard reset.

i will send this to the google feedback and remind you when i have a good news from google

        thanks

        • I understand your situation. I think the developer usually only consider "normal" situation.

BTW, I don't know you can link a yahoo email account to a Gmail account. It's possible to use yahoo email as your Google account for history reasons.

Anyway, the nexus device buyers can contact Google store experts to feedback this issue.

          • dear simon

            Good news

today i can unlock these nexus 6p phones, i think because i change the password in the old gmail account so follow the security policy from google i have to wait 3 days and they can release the owner's accoun for me

the reason is when my sister power on the new black phone, she connect to wifi and search for viber - viber ask for install android version - she say yes - she add her yahoo mail accounr ( including @yahoo.com ) and yahoo password - google play accept this and let her install viber - in the background google add her hidden gmail account ( this account, my sister did not use for along time and she use different password from yahoo account and she did not remember what is the password )

she send these phone to me - after find out she use yahhoo account to install viber and know her hidden gmail account - i add this gmail account to the white phone and i also did not know the password - i suggest google change this password for me - after confirm by sms whith my sister's phone, google change this gmail password for me and that's why i have to wait until now to unlock these phone, and in that time google repeatly ask for " ... sign in using one of the owner's acouunt for this device "

            after all thanks for all

            thanks simon

    • As explained in this guide, this is an anti-theft feature. There are no official way to bypass it for legal reasons.

Did you add your google account to the phone before factory data reset? You should know your own Gmail. You can contact Google for your account.

  • wel... hlw... bro.. i use a Walton Primo F6 .. i had it flashed... now.. im Giving the email address as well as password. After it's "Checking Info", Then the email verification text comes again. Bro, Pls help me

  • Simon,
Here's my story hopefully you can advise me what is wrong. Did a lock and reset through google for my G6, got the "please sign on with one of the original owners accounts" changed my password. Yea i know i pretty much did everything i could to delay my use of my phone. Anyways i am now +75 hrs after i changed my password and i still get the message. I have done my homework and know I am using the proper login and P/W, so those can be ruled out. WTF what do i do next? Who do i contact at google? How do i contact Google?

    • You may just wait a few more hours. If you have to contact Google on your account, you have to use a contact form in corresponding support page.

  • I just got a tablet with lollipop I for got my pattern code so did a factory reset well o entered it wrong 10 times and the device was wiped. I reentered my email and it told me to log in from another device I did that and confirmed it was me logging in . but I still get the error message telling me to log in from another device . I haven't changed my pass word or anything so do I need to wait 72 hours or something else.

    • No, device protection should NEVER ask you to log in from another device. You only need user the Google account that existed on the device before it's reset.

Is it some other sorts of protection by the vendor or by a third party?

  • I reset my edge plus, but it says "unauthorized factory has been usd to this device. Cant access log in screen." Help pls..

    • Not sure about this message.

Did you enable SIM lock? You need unlock it in Samsung's Find My Mobile page with your Samsung account.

      • Well, i hard reset my s6 edge plus, but when i turn it back on, then select language, then after that it will say " unauthorised factory reset was used in the device. Cant access log in screen"

        • did you try to flash the phone with other ROMs? How did you do the hard reset?

      • Simon. Did your Samsung Galaxy 6s translate this post for you? I have noticed that some of these posts have been either worded with great amounts of effort due to language barriers English being their second language or others translated into English. But this one seems to have been left original in the posters native language and i was just wondering how you were able to understand and respond to it. You respond to each and every post. I admire your determination. I think i will form a post asking you for help as well.

  • when i reset my deivice is use the password and user to login with the same login when i purchase first time but it say plz sign in with your previous sycned google account.... and then i change myy password 2 days ago..but i try so many time afte it but still now no luck..
    plz help
i m very frustated wih it.....kitkatt is better then lolipop i thought so...

    • If you change anything for that Google account, you need wait 72 hours to use that account to activate the phone.

  • So If I was lazy and skipped the "registering my gmail to my phone" because I primarily use Yahoo, there's no way I can get back into my phone after reset?

    • No, this feature will not be activated at all. But without a Google account, you cannot access Play store.

Also, as explained in the page, if you set lock screen security as none or swipe, device protection will NOT be activated as well.

  • What if I couldn't retrieve the Google account that was sync'd to the phone? Can Software Reflash bypass Reactivation Lock or Google Factory Reset Protection?

    • No, device protection is to protect against unauthorized flash/reset. You can contact Google is you have problems with your account.

  • My son locked himself out of this Galaxy S6 phone after having it for a few weeks, we have called Samsung, Google & visited Sprint many times. At last visit we were given Samsung's phone number and was finally told about the 72 hour wait. My question is... I am the owner of the Sprint account of 4 phones. When it asks for the owner's email, will this be my son's previous email that he had with the Galaxy S6 or will it be my gmail account and password since I am the owner of the account?

    • Not sure. Who asks for the email? You need check with them. Anyway, you should not give your Google account password to anyone.

The device owner should be the person whose Google account was added on the phone first. For any Android phones, the first Google account is always considered as owner's account. It has nothing to do with the buyer.

For Samsung, however, they consider owner as the person whose Samsung account is on the phone. You can only have up to one Samsung account on a phone. So, it is simple. If no Samsung account is added on the the phone, the person who registered warranty can be considered as owner.

Any, check with the person who asks for email account. And again, they should NOT ask for Google account password

  • What if it still does not work 72 hours after you changed the google account password ? What should be done then.

    • Contact Google in your account area. Please note, Google does not offer phone support on account issues. You have to submit the online form.

  • This is sad and unjust, an incentive to never use the security feature as forgetting passwords can brick the phone...,so anyone wishing to sell the phone should first then do their own factory reset and clean out all of the security data? Can these phones ever be cleaned of the initial owner?

Is this about security or about forcing folks to simply buy more new phones?

There should be a way for legitimate owners who can actually document that they are she actual purchasers of the phone, or are directly linked to the actual owner by a certifiable method....can be given a one time use code that overrides the security bricking lockout mechanism. Google should legitimately be allowed to charge a fee for this kind of service for genuine owners...say twenty five bucks or so.

It is outrageous that a feature designed to thwart thieves could result in people who have paid six hundred bucks for a phone losing their entire investment just because they were less than fully competent with the technology...or just may be somewhat slow or diminished in their mental capacity.

At the very least there should be some kinds of explicit and forceful warnings before people activate this kind of security...so that folks know just how serious the consequences can be and so they make damned sure they write down their passwords and store them somewhere secure and put them into their wills etc etc etc....and these need to be written in all languages.

The thieves can go to hell....but it's damned wrong for the original owners to lose the ability to use the phones they legitimately purchased.

Also, if a found phone is ever turned in to police...can the phone's I'd ever be traced back to the owner and returned?

One would think a multibillion dollar company would have thought things through more thoroughly.

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.

However, it's a legal requirements in some regions. You only need remember your Google account. It never bricks a phone.

Most legitimate second hand phone sellers are fully aware of this feature.

  • Thank you for the Great read! I agree that the vendors (including Samsung rep in Best Buy) are not communicating this. My finger print security stopped working, backup p/w did too, and I kept changing my google P/W (w/help of Samsung rep last night) in attempts to bypass locked screen. This morning I changed it again and I did a factory reset only to discover this issue and realize it is the 72 hour lockout as you have described. WISH SPRINT OR BEST BUY WOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING...would have saved me tons of headaches.

    • This is a new security feature. Most technical support staffs will get trained on this gradually, I guess.

One important thing is you can have a Samsung account on the phone so that you can unlock it through internet if fingerprint and backup password failed to work (this requires your phone is connected to internet before you are locked out). This is now the only official way to unlock a Galaxy S6 remotely. Android device manager removed the unlock feature for long time due to legal reasons.

      • Unfortunately for me Sprint removed the "findmymobile" feature....ugh, I'll have a bone to pick with them (especially since I hear that T-mobile and AT&T do). I'm currently having to wait 72 hours, I attempted to take the phone back and have it replaced, less the 14 day policy....bummer is they did not have more gold ones in stock (if I did this I would have been able to login to my Gmail from the new device, right?). Oh well, wait I will or go to another Best Buy tomorrow. As it is I might have to explain and justify my promotional offer since the Samsung pay is currently offline and will have to be setup again, and might be worse if I end up changing the current EMIE number.

        • Your Google account can be used on any other devices. The 72-hour ban is for factory data reset only. it does not affect your normal account usage or on any new devices.

Yes, some carriers removed that feature.

          • So Does this mean I don't have to make my mom unlock the phone anymore? because we did that eariler, I've had the same problem because I'm getting my mom's old phone she has the iphone which was no problem.

          • If the Google account was changed, it cannot be used to reactive the phone within 72 hours (from the time when the account was changed. not from the time when the phone is reset).

  • My wife got a new Samsung Grand Prime 2 days ago. When I first set it up with Google I used my own gmail login and password. Then I added her gmail account to the phone. After that I removed my gmail account, leaving hers on the phone. I added a bunch of apps the the phone which she asked me to remove. I thought the easiest way to do this was to do a hard reset, not knowing that this would trigger device protection. When I could not login with her email and password I changed both hers and my gmail passwords. My question: Presuming I have to wait 72 hours now, which email and password should I be using to login after 72 hours? What are my chances that it will work?
Thank you. I enjoy reading your informative replies.

    • Her gmail account should work. You have to use the Google account that existed on the phone when you tapped reset button. 72-hour (maybe a few hours more depending on Google server locations) is counted from the last time you change the account. This limitation is only for device re-activation. You should be able to use your Google account on other devices at any time.

      • I've been looking around the Internet for information on Factory reset protection and your site is one of the most informative I have found. Your answers in this comment section are an added bonus. Thank you for that!
When I first set up the new phone there was a page called "Tap & Go" where it says I can "Quickly copy any Google Accounts, backed up apps and data from your existing Android device." It should have read "any and ALL apps and data". When I put the 2 phones back to back for the copy process I thought I could pick and choose what it copied. I was unaware that it would copy all 100+apps from my other phone! My wife was not happy to see all my apps on her new phone. That's why a factory reset made sense for removing all those apps. Had I known what I know now I should have first removed all google addresses from the phone, then done a trusted reset using the menu: settings>Backup and reset>Factory data reset.
        Live and learn........

  • Hi, I need helpwith my galaxy s6. I have read your articles on it but i am having trouble. I had my lock for my phone set on to finger print it normally always works but today for some reason it just wouldn't pick up on my print and the dumb thing was I had forgotten my backup password to unlock it . So my partner decided to factory rest it for me but it is now asking for me to put in my samsung account that I used for that phone. which I have. It'll go on to say signing in BUT than it goes process failed.. I wanna get back into my phone and it won't accept my samsung account. I only have the once samsung account. I hope you can help me.

      • Yeah it was asking for Samsung Account to unlock the phone. I had signed into my Google account first than it went straight to please enter Samsung account to unlock phone. But everything's OK now I managed to find out what I was doing wrong thank goodness I didn't factory reset my old S5 it still had the Samsung account that I used on it. Without that I would have never thought I used my Hotmail email for the Samsung account and not my Google email. I changed my Samsung password on the laptop and than entered it in the phone and voila my phone is now up & running.. soon happy.. if it wasn't for your article I would not know what was going on with my phone with the whole hard reset. Thanks

  • Is there anything I can do first it was from lock now Google verification I bought the phone new am I just screwed can I sell. I have a bunch of Google accounts I have no idea which account it is

    • The simple way is to check Android devices under your Google accounts. Or, you can test one by one. I don't think you have thousands accounts.

The device protection (factory data reset protection) is designed to ask you to reactivate the phone with your Google accounts if existed before the reset. If it is to bypass easily, it is not necessary then.

  • Hi all, short question. So i reset my phone, it locked by device protection. I also changed password on same day. IT means i need to wait 72H that's ok. But i didn't know about that and when i try unlock it i removed my device from google account ( from website with device activities). Will i able to unlock my phone with my google account after 72H or I need give it to warranty and ask service to completely whipe my phone and install brand new android?

    • Yes, you need wait 72 hours.

Nobody, including Google, will do anything for you unless you can unlock the phone.

When you remove an android device from your Google account, it is not deleted immediately. It will still there as deleted device for a few months. But I am not sure about whether this affects the reactivation. If you have problems after 72 hours, you may check with Google.

      • Hi Simon. Thanks for answer. I will let community know what happened after 72H, hope I will able to unlock device.
I am not sure where information about with account should i use is storage. If my device is not permanently removed from my google account maybe it will work. I think there are some other possibilities to unlock phone with full service android re-installation etc. Information about phone reset is need to be stored in device memory so it must be possible to remove it by authorized service. Will see what will happen after 72H still few more hours to wait for me.
        Thanks!

        • If the boot loader is unlocked, yes, it's possible to flash the phone with a new ROM. But on almost all phones, boot loader is locked.

  • Hii
I have done a factory restlet of phone and it is asking for gmail account and i have refused it is there any way bypass the security.

    Thanks

    • You cannot bypass the factory data reset protection. You must use the Google account existed on the phone before it's reset to reactivate the phone.

  • This is a horrible feature. There are more cases where this is a massive hindrance than where this will actually help someone. I don't really understand the logic of deterring a thief. We all know how informed and critically analysing common thieves are, so I'm not sure who this is supposed to deter.

From my companies perspective, this "feature" might cause us to stop using Android phones altogether. It is extremely common (as in true in nearly every case) for a company phone's user to be terminated without first determining their PIN code or their personal GMail password.

Doing some experimentation we learned that wiping the phone through Active Sync does bypass this "feature". This is little comfort as the end user still has the ability to factory reset the phone before handing it in (a common process by virtually anyone who's quitting).

The only remaining solution for us to solve this is to deploy, through an MDM, a policy that disallows GMail accounts on company phones. This means users cannot use a variety of google services on their phone, or even download applications from the PlayStore. Obviously not ideal. MDM's are also a notoriously bad security solution as they can be manually disabled by any user with the ability to form a google search.

There was clearly very little thought given to any use case outside the common home user when designing this "feature". This seems to be a disturbing and highly puzzling trend in the tech industry.

    • This is never a problem for enterprise deployment. Your IT department should enable Knox on all company phones. They can then manage all these phones remotely as a super-administrator.

As you noticed, domain adminstration actually can use Active Sync to manage phones with exchange accounts on the phone. But it's not a good solution. Samsung has offered Knox for long time. Your IT dept should do some homework, IMHO.

      • "MDM’s are also a notoriously bad security solution as they can be manually disabled by any user with the ability to form a google search."

You should read the whole post before you simply suggest an android MDM. We are well aware of MDMs. I neither appreciate having to recall every phone in the fleet so that I can install an MDM, nor appreciate the cost associated, nor see it as a perfect solution.

      • I don't think you're even reading my posts, but I'll try one last time to explain.

My company switched from Blackberry in 2012. At the time we were unaware of Google's random desire to force consumer grade features down everyone's throat. Perhaps that was hindsight we should have had. But in 2012 android was evaluated extensively and determined to be a fitting option for us.

During this evaluation we looked at several mobile device management "solutions". None of them really did anything we needed, and virtually all of them simply provide a false sense of security. The MDM client application can be uninstalled at the users leisure. This means company data on a phone is ultimately an HR issue no matter what you do. Fine. We were ok with that.

It's almost 4 years later and there are hundred of phones deployed across corporate and more than half a dozen satellite locations. Most very remote and over several hundred kilometres away. So, even if an MDM would make this new feature tolerable, it would come with a massive capital cost. One that was forced on us by Google with no warning.

Even if we decided to bore this capital cost, or if we had hindsight enough 3 years ago to deploy an MDM, how exactly can an MDM fix this issue? Can an MDM stop a user from booting to their recovery partition and resetting the phone to factory? No. Can we use an MDM to block the usage of gmail accounts? Yes, but this doesn't fix the previous problem, and it severely handicaps the phones usage.

And after all of this the user can simply go here:
        https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+remove+mdm
        and circumvent everything.

So please stop smugly asserting this feature is conducive to business if you just do things right. It's not. And I think you know that.

        • I just copy the reply to your other comments (I am not biased to Knox which is just used as an example):

if you are looking for free enterprise solution for mobile phone management, I believe you are in wrong direction.

Did you ever try Knox? my recommendation is to call the Samsung guys to demonstrate Knox in front of you. They will be more than happy to do that. Of course, it is NOT free. The price, as I know, depends on your region, features you requested and number of devices.

for your business, you need a solution for the problem, instead of blaming Android/Google. At the end of the day, if the problem is not solved, it hurts your business immediately, not Google’s business. There are no perfect solutions.

Also, you need competent (in managing Android devices) IT staffs. Device protection was announced long time ago and IT professionals managing Android devices should know the details and implications. We discuss this topic because most our members are using own phones, not company phones (which should be managed by IT dept, not HR dept) and they are not IT professionals.

Anyway, back to Blackberry? They are jumping to Android. Of course, they have enterprise solutions for your Android phones, just like Knox unfortunately.

          • How about you answer this questions instead of building a strawman to attack our competence:

Can an MDM stop a user from booting to their recovery partition and resetting the phone to factory?
Can an MDM be manually removed by any user of a android phone?
Have YOU ever actually used an MDM?

          • it depends on MDM solution and your configurations. There are so many solutions and I don't know which one you are referring to. You can always check with the vendor and they can give you the definite answer. For enterprise solutions, it is not necessary to figure it out by yourself (and often you cannot because they always offer customized solutions if you can afford): you just need tell them what you want.

I only managed BES and Knox servers before. I don't know whether this is MDM you are referring to. I have no comment on other solutions.

          • If you are a Knox user, you should know the contact (account manager for your company) in Samsung and you can request technical support.

I am not authorized to "promise" you any features of Knox. it should take you less then 2 mins to call Samsung sales.

          • I dont need to call Samsung to ask about basic functionality of MDM software.

An MDM is a program that runs at the operating system level. Therefore it cannot prevent an untrusted wipe, which is often processed outside of OS operations..

At the time of this writing, as a CORE FUNCTION OF ANDROID, all administrator applications can be removed from the device without IT authorizationa and with no impact to data outside of that program.

It's clear you don't work at the a very Sr design or process level, and thats fine. If you did, you wouldn't need to call Samsung to answer those questions, and you also wouldn't need to skate around everything I'm saying to avoid coming to terms with the fact that: you're wrong Simon. You're simply wrong.

          • It is unnecessary to prove who is right or who is wrong.

If you have any problems, you need find a solution, not to prove you are right. If all solutions you know are not working, you need check the solutions that you haven't tried yet.

My recommendation is to call Samsung Knox sales guy, repeatedly . You tell them what you want and whether they have a solution. Period. Don't assume you know Knox better than Samsung engineers. If you think you know everything already, nobody can help you then (but your problem is still not solved).

In addition, almost all phones can be rooted (not just Android, including iOS or BB or Symbian) and almost all boot loaders can be unlocked for determined hackers. Even factory data reset in Samsung phones can be easily bypassed with a simple OTG device without rooting and without unlocking bootloader (and Samsung only partially fixed it in Marshmallow update). But this does not mean, all phones are not safe. Enterprise solutions can monitor and detect abnormal behaviors on the phones, and lock down features whenever necessary. Your employees also signed IT AUP, didn't they?

Anyway, as the discussion is not beneficial for other readers who are using personal phones (for company phones, you should get support from IT dept or service vendors), I will try to stop the discussion here.

PS. I do not discuss how to root, or how to bypass factory data reset protection unofficially. You can find such topics in other communities.

  • I have a company with hundreds of smartphones on my account. I got a new S6 for an employee in November, and in December he quit without notice. I hired a new employee so I was about to send this to him and went to reset it first. It said I needed the employees Samsung Account password, which of course belonged to the former employee. I own this phone, and it is still on my account. No changes other than needing it reset to clear off the old employees junk and get it ready for the new employee. I googled and found an article explaining how to factory reset when you don't have the password and I did that. Now it is saying it is locked because of an abnormal factory reset and is asking again for the former employees personal Samsung account, of which I have no way of accessing. Again, this is my phone, I am the purchaser and it is still on my account, yet I am locked out of it?? Any ideas?

    • The user can also turn on reactivation lock using Samsung's find my mobile service. This lock is similar to Google's device protection. You cannot do much without knowing the account details.

For enterprise phones, the IT department should enable Knox or other enterprise solutions on the phone so that they can manage the phone as a super-administrator.

    • Do not listen to the above. Knox is a non-free, cloud based application that needs to be manually deployed across your fleet and will only provide a false sense of security. At best, it could obfuscate the process of resetting a phone enough to occasionally deter it.

The fact of the matter is, this feature has been implemented with very little thought given to any use case beyond the average home consumer. iPhones have the same problem as I understand this legislation comes directly from the California government. Aren't government regulations grand? It might be time to look at blackberry again for company use.

      • if you are looking for free enterprise solution for mobile phone management, I believe you are in wrong direction.

Did you ever try Knox? my recommendation is to call the Samsung guys to demonstrate Knox in front of you. They will be more than happy to do that. Of course, it is NOT free. The price, as I know, depends on your region, features you requested and number of devices.

        • The above is a complete simpleton that has no concept of IT strategy and process, certainly not for small business. The fact of the matter is you now need to incorporate complex and expensive legal waivers and HR policies for any size business that incorporates Android phones. Thank the California government for this. This is the future technological ignorance and apathy has bought you.

  • My sons phone was factory reset, we had to change his Google password, this was 1-17-2016 Sunday, its been 2 weeks ago and still doesn't work, hello has been beyond 72 hrs. Advice Anyone???

    • You need make sure the Google account is the correct one. You can check whether the phones is listed under this Google account in Android device manager from your PC. You can Google Android device manager, than log in with that account.

  • I have reset my password at 7AM and then did a factory reset and again reset my password at 11PM.

72 hours wait is from the first password change or the second one?

  • I have purchased a LG v10 from a private owner who's teen had almost lost it a number of times. I was shown the receipts(I asked if he had them so I would know it wasn't stolen) I guess he had no idea about the new protection as he had already done the factory reset and we both assumes there would be no issues. I have been unable to log in due to the new feature do you know where I can go to see about it being able to be flashed?

  • I was given an Alcatel one touch and the person who gave it to me is now dead. Obviously nobody can get access to his email so this phone is essentially a paperweight now?

  • FYI - There must be a newer FRP update, because OTG Drive method does not work, nor is there an "Accessibility" button at the language choice screen, to try the other method of bypassing. It's completely locked down (Thanks Google. You saved me from myself).

  • what happens if i never added a number to my google account and then tried to bypass the google lockout by using a friends phone to get the g-code? Will google still allow me to login after the 72 hour lock out?

    • It has nothing to do with phone numbers. Google doesn't send any code. You need the Google account that existed on the phone before it's reset to reactivate the phone. This Google account name is stored in a secured location on the phone. You need connect to Google server to authenticate. There are no alternatives.

  • Ok, so I, like so many others, had no clue about this "new" feature ... So I changed my password for all my google accounts on 2/18 at 1:37am and then did a factory reset on my S6 Edge Plus at 4:30am and now i am just stuck in the never ending loop of not my gmail info.. Then my boyfriend thought he could "fix" it or go around it and changed my password again on 2/19 at 5:30 pm --- So now I have no clue when my phone will be ok to use again ..... Could you please tell me what day I can attempt to get my phone to working order

  • can software update bypass google verification lock?
i have tried otg cable method and side sync method but both didn't work on my galaxy j7.
    plz help me..thanks

  • I don't like this new security feature I have entered my email and password correctly and still don't sign me in I have called ZTE Google Boost Mobile still no help I need to get back into my I had lost six people that was close to me do to this security feature

    • did you use the correct Google account that existed on the phone before it is reset? if you change password or other security features of that Google account, you have to wait 72 hours.

You can check whether the phone is listed under your account in Android device manager.

  • And I have look in my Google account and my new device was listed that's no good still can't sign in I really hate this security feature I will not let any of my friends or family members buy a phone that has this security feature on it I'm only buying it again because I that phone just not the security feature on the phone

    • Not sure about your problem.

As I know, there are no known problems if the Google account is correct. If you made changes to your Google account, you need wait 72 hours before you can activate the phone with that account.

  • I have made a password change and waiting six days and still can't sign in I gotta buy a new phone because of this issue with the security feature on that phone every since this new security feature I been having nothing but issues with my new cell phone im just fed up with this security feature

  • Trying to unlock an LG G4 but when I get to the setup screen with Language and Accessibility there is no Accessibility option to select, just language. is there a fix for this?

      • i used sidesync and i install it on my device because my Samsung Galaxy j7 can't read my OTG cable, i install samsung bypass google verify, and im going to setting/backup and reset and i go to data factory reset and delete all, then my phone was going to process again like Welcome/wifi ,terms and conditions/checking connection/software update then verifying your account :( I've always stuck on this loop :(

        • Don't waste your time. You have to use your Google account.

The OTG method requires OTG support, which pops out it's content when OTG storage is inserted. This is a bug in Samsung's phones. If your phone doesn't have OTG support, you cannot use this method at all.

  • I bought a used BLU phone from amazon. I got it in the mail today and when I turned it on the previous owner didn't take the password off so I called BLU and they told me how to factory reset it. So after I reset it, it then asked me for gmail account and gave me the "this phone was reset, use a account that was previously synced to this phone message." Is there anyway around this or is my only option sending it back to amazon?

  • I was able to get to the settings while on FRP and turn on the OEM unlock.
I own an nexus 9 with marshmallow installed on it.
if I flash the device using the stock image, will it get rid of the frp?

  • Hi im having trouble with a lg v10 I recently bought it tells me I have to sync in with a previous account...I tried to bypass it with a method I seen on youtube I had to go on accessibility then switch access after that I had to go on talkback and click on settings but that's where I get stuck at cause the phone won't let me click on settings I can see it says settings but it's not in bold letters like the rest of the options and I can click it but it won't open up please if anyone can help me out with this problem let me know thanks

    • You should return it and make sure it is a legitimate one.

If the phone is stolen one, it can be tracked whenever you connect to any mobile network.

    • You should know the seller before you buy something. Most selling platforms like ebay allow you to dispute the transaction. Some payment methods, e.g., paypal, also support such requests...

  • this is the worst thing ever.. nobody can figure this out.. bought my daughter a phone, she set it all up and forgot her passcode and cant remember her google account. complete waste of money no way around this

  • Please help!! I have an lg v10 and i watched your video on how to bypass google verification but it wont work for me. In the video it shows you select "talk back" and then select "settings" but on mine i cant select "settings" because its disabled. i see the settings option but cant select it.

Do you know why this is or more important what i can do mmnx

  • Well based on some of the responses i'd say it's working. I want to thank you for your time and energy to explain this extremely complicated and apparently widely un-liked "kill Switch" If not for this post I would likely still be waiting on hold for verizon tech support to speak to google. Sad that they couldn't explain the issue. But I found it here with a google search in less than a minute. My question is how this is allowed to block all functionality my wife can't even access to make a 911 call. Got to be some issue within the laws? Don't know if you can answer or not and really more of a statement then question anyway. Well, I'm off to have 3 days in hell with a upset Mrs. Will reply after said allotment if it gives anymore trouble or fires right back up. Thanks again for getting the information out there.

    • The problem is clearly explained in the case of FBI vs Apple on unlocking a iPhone 5c. The phone actually belong to the government. FBI eventually paid third parties to hack and unlock the phone. Apple technically cannot direct unblock the phone either ( of course, they can "update" a special version of iOS for the phone to get full control of the phone. But they claimed the version is not available yet).

Many privacy advocators exaggerate the privacy issue on smartphones. Many politically-right politicians then passed some stupid laws. The result is that only the owner can unlock the phone. Phone manufacturers removed their tools for remote control. For example, prior to 2015, you can use Android device manager to unlock your Android phone remotely. But they have to remove this feature after evaluating legal responsibilities.

Currently, only Asian manufacturers still offer some tools for you to manage your phone remotely. But how long will they offer such tools?

Device protection ( factory reset protection) actually is legally required explicitly in a few regions. It's intention is to reduce smartphone thieves and protect owner data. Again, vendors don't take any legal responsibilities and therefore the owner have to bear all burdens and legal responsibility. I don't think there are viable solutions in next one or two years because many phone owners are misled on the priority of privacy. It need time for people to understand the truth and accept the compromise. You also need trust some parities.

      • 3 days later, and it works good as new. For the record emergency call was always available. She just didn't see it immediately.

          • Hay dude am pasindu from srilanka. today (10th April 2016) morning I changed my Samsung j7 Gmail account password and after 2hours then i reset my device. Now I can't access my device. • Hay dude am pasindu from srilanka. Your 72 hours lock out method is 100% sure way for the real owners. I am first owner of the my galaxy j7 mobile. luckily After 72 hours I won this challenge. • I tried to do the device protection bypass on a LG stylo and got to the part where you go into the settings for TalkBack and the settings button shows gray and I'm not able to get into the TalkBack settings can someone help me out

    • I have a Galaxy S5, to get into the context menu on TalkBack, I have to swipe in a capital "L" pattern, and select talkback settings, scroll with 2 fingers down to "open app in play" and it should take you there after logging into a google account

  • hey so i got an LG Magna from a friend and it had me try to verify the google account used but my friend told me that he got it from somebody else so im left with a locked phone and the "settings" option in "talk back" is faded so i cant use it i would really appreciate some help with this

    • There are no official ways to bypass the FDR protection. You must know any Google accounts existed on the phone before resetting.

  • I tried bypassing my Galaxy S6 edge with the video provided on this site. Everything went smoothly until I had to download the Samsung bypass google verify apk. It tells me there is a problem parsing the package.
Anyone know how I can fix that.

    Thnakd

    • @Nicolas: Your Donwload package must have problem, try re downloading, if it fails still then the apk file is not compatible with your device, Thank you

  • So i bought a note 5 from someone and it was broken so i went and got it fixed but the person i bought it from didnt know the password so i factory reset it now in the setup wizard in the part that says checking connection it says it couldnt connect to internet and i cant get past this step what do i do

    • You cannot bypass factory data reset protection. You need the Google account that existed on the phone before it's reset, to re-activate the phone.

  • hello air i recently factory reset my phone lg g4 android 5.1 now when i switched on the phone i can not skip wifi set and its not going forward .......

    • You need reactivate the phone with your Google account. So you need either mobile data or WiFi connection to proceed.

  • So I have a Lg G4 and ur didn't support multiple user accounts, anyone have a clue as to where I start bypassing gfrp? I have gained access to the internet and settings

  • Hi
I have done factor restore in Android 6.0.1 in my micromax android one mobile .... When try to use device screen gets locked in "checking connection" for hours ... My wifi is working fine .... Can someone help?

    • Your need re-activate the phone with your Google account that existed on the phone before it's reset. You cannot bypass it. Your can try check whether your router can access internet.

  • Today I changed my google account password and did a factory reset on my brand new s7 edge. (spring cleaning) Does the 72 hr lockout period apply to this phone or did I just create an expensive paper weight?

    • Your probably have to wait 72 hours to re-activate the phone with your Google account.

Actually, your just need set lock screen security to none or swipe before resetting to avoid such issues.

You can also remove all Google accounts on the phone before resetting.

  • If the google account is forgotten or removed, can the Phone still be repaired by repair centers?
The phone is a 'Motorola Moto G 3rd gen' that I bought for my son. He setup the Phone, forgot pin and account.
I 've factorey reset the phone end up in this frp security loop.
I did not find any way to request for a solution to google.

    • You can use the contact form to contact Google on your Google account issues.

To re-activate there phone, you need Google account existed on the phone before when resetting. This is how FDR reset protection works.

      • What do you mean with 'To re-activate THERE phone'.
It is my phone, I bought it, I'm the legitimate owner.
I filled in all google forms, but there is no way to have a one-to-one contact with google that helps me out.
So my question was, can Motorola repair my phone? (e.g. complete flash, also FRP data)

        • I don't think Motorola or any legit business can help you repair or bypass FDR protection as they may have legal troubles. But if it's still under warranty, you can check with Motorola.

  • I have this same problem using a oneplus two. However the original google account I have used on the phone is not accepted, I have ever only had one google account and after trying to sign in I just get: Please sign in using one of the owners accounts for this device. Any ideas?

  • Sir I have an ematic egq377bl tablet and after doing a hard reset it is asking for an email synchronized on the device but I don't know it cus I was given the phone by my uncle and he is currently not available any hope

    • No, you cannot bypass this requirement. The owner should remove his Google account before he gives the tablet to you.

  • hi i bought a s6edge of a friend he reset the phone and gave me the phone he was the second owner so if his email is put in u can send a code to his number and also if the original owners email is put u can also send a code to that number so does that mean both emails would work to unlock the security code thank you

  • hi
my phone LG G4 it dose not have one steps that shown in up video rootjony like do it and that step is in setting user dose not there why pls help

  • Having read through most everything. Is there simply a Google Android Support phone number to call to basically unAssociate the Device from GMail given legitimate resale. My wife successfully had AT&T unlock a Samsung Galaxy S3 whereby the original owner relinquished further responsibility; although, has no clue what or which account was setup on the Device when first setup!

  • Good day i did a hard reset on my andriod and it asked for my gmail password.... Buh my issue is i changed my password twice when i was trying to log in without knowing about the 72 hours wait period.....i just want to knw if this wont b a problem after 72hours

    • There should be no problems. You can use the Google account to re-activate the phone after 72 hours (from your last change to that Google account).

  • If the OEM unlock allows a thief to (theoretically) flash a hacked ROM to bypass device protection, couldn't you also flash the ROM back to 5.0, in which device protection doesn't exist?

    • Boot loader on almost all Android phones is locked by default. You should not turn on it unless you know what you are doing.

Also, OEM unlock (after you enable it in developer options) will be turned off automatically after a normal reboot.

  • I work for a cell phone company in Canada . Client came in with his lg G4 that randomly reset through the night. Trying to use the clients gmail account to verify but unable to. His gmail hasn't had anything changed in the past few months and it is the only one that was on the phone. We took our store demo phone and logged into his gmail account on it with no issue. The lg G4 will not allow us to verify the account and keeps saying it isn't the gmail when it is the only gmail that has ever been used, client uses it on all of his devices ( such as his tablet) and never had an issues. Client does not have a computer and we have no way to flash it in store because our flash requires us to turn on usb debugging which we cannot do since we cannot access the account. Please help

    • Android devices are listed under Google account. You can check it in his Google dashboard from any PC. Google account was hashed and saved in the device. You have to use the account to re-activate the phone.

  • Dear Simon,
After reading your comments i almost lost hope, but after a little search i just successfully unlocked my phone without knowing the previous email or password.
People it is not impossible, just don't stop trying :)

    • can you share it to us please. i have the same problem, i actually have 4 accounts in my device and add new one for the past few days before i reset my phone so i already have 5 accounts in my device. no after i reset my phone and log in the 4 accounts it keeps saying "USE THE OWNER ACCOUNT ON THIS DEVICE" the bad thing is i forgot the 5th Account email cause that was just a dummy account. i have question is the 5th account sync to my device? T_T need HELP

  • Thanks for the useful information. I only wish I read this post two hours ago, before factory resetting my wife's Motorola Moto G as suggested by our phone company (she has been unable to receive any call in the last few days and they were unable to give us any help). Of course, she did not remember her Google account password, therefore I had to change it right before factory resetting the phone. Now I found out that for at least 72 hours (why not a couple of months?!) she won't be able to use her mobile phone at all. Which is not really a joke if you don't have a spare one to replace it (we don't) and need it for your work and/or to keep in touch with your children, and not just to play Pokemon Go. It seems Google cares a lot about our security, but doesn't care at all about warning its users that they may be locked out for at least three days from their own phones if they dare to change their Google account password. They can call it "security", for me it's just total nonsense.

  • Good day i have the same problem, but i have multiple accounts in my device before i reset my phone. the thing is when i entered the accounts which is already in my phone since the first day i used it is not working. google keep saying "PLEASE SIGN IN ONE OF THE USERS ACCOUNT IN THIS DEVICE" my big problem is that i recently added an account to my device few days ago before i reset my phone, the bad news is that account is just a dummy account i forgot the username of that account. my question is, is my primary account to access my google verification is the NEW account that i added few days ago? if that so, i cant use my other account in my device to unlock the verification? T_T

    • As I know, any Google accounts existed on the phone when you reset the phone should work.

The first Google account on the phone is primary account, which cannot be removed unless you offer there password for that account.

      • Thank you Simon. should i do the process after 24 hours? so i have to log.in the first account that i put to verify the google account.? cause right now i keep on logging it and it keeps saying that "USE THE OWNERS ACCOUNT THAT IS ENTERED IN THIS DEVICE" i guess i have to log it after 24 hours.

        • Any Google accounts on the phone should work. If you makes any changes to the account, the specific account can only be usedb to unlock the phone after 72 hours. But this should not affect other Google accounts.

Your can check any Android devices under your account on Android device manager. You can check it on your PC.

          • how will i know if my phone is banned for 72hours? i check my google account and go to device management/recently used device and i see my OPPO f1 device used 16hours ago. is there any way i can bypass OPPOf1 google verification T_T its the only phone i have. T_T huhuhu need help

          • You are NOT banned. It is just a 72-hour waiting policy to protect the legitimate owner. In case the Google account was also compromised, the owner may still have 72 hours to react.

  • Hi,
My phone (Moto G3 Turbo) froze and when I turned it on the screen was flickering and I couldn't do anything.
I did a factory reset, but then I couldn't remember my password. I managed to change it on a desktop but now I can't login on my phone. I wrote a feedback to google but don't know if/when they'll reply.
    Any help would be great.

    Cheers,
    Hector

    • As explained in this page, if you change your Google account details, you cannot use this account to reactivate the phone within 72 hours since you make the change.

  • I had a few Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo's that were returned to me that were password protected. One of the S5 Neo's was running on 5.1.1 and the other S5 Neo was running on 6.0.1.

The video on how to bypass the FRP for Samsung Galaxy smartphones worked like a charm on the S5 Neo running on 5.1.1. The other S5 Neo running on 6.0.1 did not work; no camera option at the unlock screen.

The solution I found to bypass the FRP on the S5 Neo running on 6.0.1, was to download ODIN and the stock 5.1.1 firmware for the S5 Neo. Using ODIN I was able to load the stock 5.1.1 firmware onto the S5 Neo and use the bypass method outlined on this webpage.

So thankful for Samsung bypass information outlined on this webpage!

  • hi
I made remot format to my phone but befor that I changed my password to my google account and now my phone refuse my account !!!!!

    • Your Google account can be used to reactivate the phone after 72 hours (since you made changes to the account).

  • I have bought a second hand Samsung a7 at very low cost wen I opened the phone showing this email verification so what should I do now I didn't find that guy since then !?

  • hi
I just buy a used phone now I reset phone then Asking previous user email id
I don't know previous email id
I want to log in with my email id
    could you help me please.

  • Hi.I buy phone. I created a gmail account.. To open plays store.... After 2 days I reset my phone ..but its need google account to continue I use my account that only one in that phone but its always wrong password ..my phone is brand new.what should I do???its one day ago now...pls reply me

    • As explained in this page, you need Google account that existed on the phone before it's reset, to reactivate the phone. There are no easy way to bypass it. you should know your Google account details. If you can still return the phone, you can try to return the phone.

  • @Simon I forgot to we're on at&T under my sister's name if this leave it for 72 hour methond does not work I'm this close to taking it to At&T store on wednesday during my mom's day off. I'll let you know if it works after 3 days.

  • I have an LG G3 that my boyfriend tried to root. I'm not sure if he deleted something he shouldn't have or what has happened. I did a factory reset because I could get it to do literally nothing. When I tried to log back into the phone, no luck. It will connect to the internet but when it goes to the Google sign in screen, I get an error message reading "Google Play services has stopped."
I have been trying to fix the problem in my spare time for 2 months. I have no idea what I'm doing! As I currently have an over priced plan, he has since upgraded, & this phone is paid for...I'd love to be able to fix it & unlock it to use on a cheaper plan.
The main issue is that I have no PC. Just a smart TV and a play station as far as other devices I could connect it to.
    Please help.

  • I'm currently in China and I resetted my phone. I can't get pass the "Checking Connection" phase. What can I do?

    • I guess Google is blocked in China. So you cannot connect to Google server.

However, if you use data roaming, you can still connect to Google servers in China. It seems China only block sim card from China. But data roaming can be very expensive.

If you are using WiFi, you need to use VPN to connect to Google server.

  • My new Lg G4 have not on accounts & sync google accont option, only : LG, Email and Microsoft account, when I do a hard reset does not seek any application to google account ... Just enter the android and there is no google store also ...

    • Did you buy it from an authorized dealer? It sounds fishy. Only LG phones sold in China don't have Google things because Google is blocked in China. But it should be filled with other bloatware.

  • Hello
I have a Galaxy Tab E, and was trying to set up to VMware.
Had to do a factory reset.
However, my tablet will not recognize any OTG cables or thumb drives. Thumb drives are accessed, but file manager doesn't come up.
Tried the "disconnect wifi" method, but in my situation, extremely hard to do (have a cable modem/router)
    Any assistance?

  • I bought a slate 8 from a county auction in Ca. They sent the tablet but wiped it in the boot screen so, they did it wrong. I cant get past the log in screen but, I can get into the settings via a long walk around. Once in the settings menu, what do I need to do so I can then reset the tablet correctly? In settings, I have erased all data 3 times, and rebooted but the same issue still. Also, there is NO USB DEBUGGING on this thing at all.... When I go into the bootloader, I can wipe the tablet, the cache, load from adb(but it isnt seen by a pc or laptop) or go into bootloader but it goes to the android screen and just sits there???

    • Not sure about that tablet. Once in the settings menu, can you add your google account?

For USB debugging, in recovery mode, most vendors do not enable ADB. You can only use ADB to update. There usually is an option in the recovery menu. But you cannot run other ADB commands.

Anyway, you may check with the seller to solve the issue. You may get yourself in trouble if the tablet was a stolen one.

  • If I have complete access to the phone before performing the hard reset, but I don't know the main google account password, can I just create a new google account, hard reset the phone, and use that new account when asked to verify at the hard reset? thanks!

    • You can back up the phone, remove the old Google account, then add a new Google account. Wait a few hours, then to reset.

You can also remove screen lock (set lock screen security to none or swipe). Thus will also disable device protection.

Anyway, if you forget the login for the Google account, you will not able able to access it after the reset.

  • LG G4......what if I don't have the accessibility button on the language screen, when bypassing Google Verification?

    • it depends on the version of the firmware. You should check some phone hacking community. We do not discuss such issues. The post is just FYI.

  • Hi, got my lg k10 locked after hard reset just like this one. Followed all the procedure and got stucked on installing the apk. It wouldn't install because it was obtained from unknown sources. And when I go to settings, the option to allow installation from unknown sources is gray, meaning I cannot change it. Any luck?

  • Hello,

i have an Lenovo YT3-X50F/Yoga3 Tablet, bought 2 weeks ago. There was a Software update from
Lenovo, after this i cannot login with my google account anymore. I have waited now 4 days, still
    the same message.
I can use my google account normally with my PC, i have the login data - why is device still locked?
I turned on 2 way auth, Tablet accepts mail adress, password, code - then the 72 h message pops us
    again..... pff.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Stefan

    • Did you reset the tablet? If not, you should use your lock screen PIN/password/pattern, not Google account to unlock the tablet.

If you reset the tablet after the update, you need to use your Google account to setup/activate the tablet. If you made any changes to the Google account, you can only use that Google account to activate the tablet after 72 hours (since you made the changes to the Google accounts). During this 72 hours, you can use your Google account normally except activating Android devices which were reset.

  • See the only problem that nobody talks about here is even if you do know the original email and password this crap is bugged and keeps you in a loop! I am the original owner. Factory reset and put in the email and password and all it does is send you right back to insert email and password again. It never unlocks. That's the problem.

    • You cannot unlock the phone with Google account. You need Google account to reactivate the phone after a factory data reset.

What's the problem you are facing?

  • Hi Simon :)

I am in a long business trip in UK now and have my phone totally locked after daughter's multiple unlock attempts...

The phone: LG 3Gs (D722) with Android 5.x (not sure latest was 5.1 or 5.2, updated ~mid'summer) with 3 google accounts, 2 personal both with 2FA installed (main one bound to the SIM card in roaming, second SIM card left switched off at home country; 3rd google account is managed by my home country company).

SIM cards present in the phone:
SIM1 is my main-main phone number in home country (was in Roaming), that bound to main personal google account with 2FA SMS code confirmations.
SIM2 is temporary pay-as-you-go UK number, that I used for office activities

Also I've setup guest mode (Gesture mode) for the daughter with the known PIN code to unlock (maybe she also tried it hundred times, I don't know).

Now I cannot unlock it, nor using PIN code, neither trying to authenticate any of my personal Google account(s).

Also I don't have any other phone, maybe only to buy a used one.
But I have laptop with internet connection so far :)

Any ideas on how to get back my LG to life quickly?

    Regards, Alex

    • Eventually resolved by temporary switching off 2FA on main google acc - then I was able to unlock the phone with simple password login and restoring all security settings on the phone, as well as setting back 2FA with next re-login on ALL my devices, browsers, etc

    • If you change anything for your Google account, you need to wait for 72 hours (from the time you made the last change).

If you did not make any change to your Google account, you don't need to wait.

  • My phone was stolen and it had no password or patten,so the thef got access into the system.i didn't put my account before. Then i reported the issue to my nearest police station and after sometime the thef was caught ,He returned my phone with this problem. I think the thef put an account and reseted the phone perposely before he returned it.

  • Hi,

I am on vacation in China. I performed a factory reset on my Samsung S8. I can't get past the "Checking network" page because my phone can't connect to Google Server. What can I do?

  • I have a Moto G4 Plus. There have only ever been two Google accounts on this phone - mine and my father's. I reset the phone five days ago. The phone constantly loops on the 'This device was reset. To continue, sign in with a Google Account that was previously synced on this device' screen, regardless of whether I use my own account info, or my father's account info.

Obviously, there is a bug here, and not a properly functioning security system. I check both Google accounts online, and I can see the login attempts to the device. However, I am unable to login to the phone.

  • factory reset on samsung j7 tried your method with org no success.have 2 phones both linked when i enter the google pass on samsung it unlocks or registers on my other phone Xiaomi 4x 4g.now locked out of samsung j7.it says 24hrs or is it actually 72hrs wait before i try again.

  • Hello,
Sorry if this has been answered above, I am a bit confused.

I work for a company that provides work mobiles to our staff. One of my staff that I supervise handed their phone back when they resigned. I tried to hard reset it so I could pass it to a new staff member, but now I can't get past the screen asking me to log in with the google account previously on the phone. Unfortunately the staff member must have used their personal google account so I don't have the details.

I have seen mention of a 72 hour lock out - does that apply in my situation or is that for people who know the google account details?

I can totally understand the benefits of this system to deter theft, but it is a bit irritating in this situation - especially as the phone is coming out of my department's budget and is totally useless currently!

Any help would be amazing! Thanks.

    • For company phones, you should use some enterprise solutions, for example, MobileIron, to manage these devices. In this case, you can limit the usage of the phone and act as super-admin.

if you do not use any enterprise solutions, you cannot control individual device. The device will be always associated with staff's personal Google account. In this case, when a staff handover the phone, you should ask him to remove personal Google account, set lock screen to none or swipe, then reset. Your IT dept should have an SOP for this.

Anyway, for the phone, only the guy can reactive it.

  • My phone is Asus.
I've made factory reset without changing the password and it gave me this error.
After almost 4 days I tried again and it didn't let me sign in with the same error message.
Afterwards I've changed the password and tried after 25 hours but again its the same issue.

the only thing left it to wait more 72 hours (from password change) - if it wont work Im not sure what should I do.

    what can I do? :(

  • I reset my galaxy s6 to factory reset but it stuck on the samsung account i put the correct account details but it doesn't work how to by pass the samsung account

    • Samsung account is not required. You can skip it. Google account is required if Google account existed in the phone when you reset it.

Also, for Samsung account, you can reset password if you can access the email associated with the account.

  • Seems to me like this Simon does not care about the honest owners of Android smart phone that did a Factory Reset to pass the phone onto a young new user of phones. Your Device Protection (DP)/Factory Reset Protection (FRP) SUCKS. I know the Google account and password that was on the phone BUT your Device Protection (DP)/Factory Reset Protection (FRP) keeps telling me to enter the previously synced google account name & password. The bloody phone only ever had 1 account on it & i know the account name & password are correct as I have it on my LG G7.

The phone is now a BRICK,,,,,, thanks Google

  • Having same issue buying buying phone online and now can't reach seller.. so am I just out the money I spent? Please help I've been trying to get this taken care of for my wife as a gift and I'm disabled so dont have the money to replace again

  • I lost my phone in december but i recently recovered it and I can not use it because it is asking for google account verification before I do a factory reset. I had set up find my device. Can that help?

  • Honestly am frustrated if I can recover my own phone that was stolen from me and am being asked to pay $20 to have google account on it reset.

  • I am looking for help with Huawei T1 tablet please. It had my daughter's gmail account on it before we did a hard reset (it was running slow and full of junk). We now can't log back into the google account on the tablet (we've waited 24 hours before trying again). We did not know that we had to remove the account before re-setting. Is there any way we can use the device again with her google account? It just keeps coming up saying the password is wrong but we know it isn't because she can log in on other devices. Thanks.

  • Hi there, we went to the find my device page using her account but it only shows her phone, not her tablet. We didn't change the password on the account. Thanks.

    • Then very likely, she used other Google accounts. Some kids may register several Google accounts.

Google tracks the usage of Google account on all devices in your account page: https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity

If the tablet is not listed under her account page, as mentioned, probably she used another Google account for the tablet.

  • Look whoever you are. He about not acting like everyone is a thief. Some people honestly paid for the god damn phone and quite simply can not find the person who sold them the phone and that person being the legal prior owner. So what Google has done is create a way for phone companies to generate more revenue and its F'ing rediculous. It's like creating a lock without a key to get back in. Retarded. Like buying a house with a security system. But you forget the code the first time. Now u need the original owner. Oh wait. They moved. Where? I dont know. It wasn't my business Where They went. All i know own that sold a house for money and were able to afford to move. Now how do u get in. Google had to be smart enough to realize this. Surely they wouldn't want you to go to jail for buying and having to break into your own house. If they don't have a fail safe they should be liable for the phone because all im all they are the ones who now took it from its rightful owner without purchasing it. Imagine the security syste. Company of your home showing up and saying well u did agree. Sorry. Your just gonna have to go buy a new house. This one's locked up. B.S. is what this is. Yeah your helping some. But how many people thst were honestdid you f over? What are they? Collateral damage. Since when did the thief become more important than an honest paying customer?

  • I bought my us moto X pure in 2016 spring. Set up an google account that my browser somehow didn't saved at that time and I have no idea which account that is. One day afternoon in 2016 summer trip to my grandma's, I forgot my login pattern and blocked forever. 2018 tried some internet instruction to but end up with nothing, and made one more mistake to get it factory reset and FRPed myself. Finally today I remembered the pattern but FRP still blocked me. Google won't help since I don't remember the account, or the phone number I no longer have access to after moving abroad, yet they can tell my exact model of phone I used and still have the proof of purchase but that that it matters to google. And I can barely find moto to help me either.
The industry are locking us from hardware's individual chips having serial numbers, to software demanding for our personal information as credential yet without a long past phone number and account name, they just won't do.
My old galaxy s4 is still running today, it has pattern lock and pin backup which actually did helped me once, I failed to find where back up pin setups were when I got the moto x with newer android at that time.
I feel sorry for simon facing all these nagging complaints that logically shouldn't be directed towards him because he took no part in the design and implementation of FRP, but please understood that we have no where to ask for help and to direct this feeling of despair and helplessness. All possibilities turned into nothing. There is no more clever trick, no technical savior, only not functioning tutorial, scam and virus links. And only to be doubted as thieves when explaining as how we end up with a glowing lithium brick.
