How to rename Google Home?

How is Google Home named?

When you set up Google Home, the app asks you to specify the location/room of the Google Home device.

By default, your Google Home will be named as XXX room Home.

Most Google Home owners may be OK with the name. But some owners may want to rename Google Home so that the name of Google Home is more meaningful and personalized.

It is even more useful to rename Google Home devices if you have more than one Google Home device at home.

Anyway, it is easy to change the name of Google Home in Google Home app.

How to rename Google Home?

To rename Google Home (i.e., change name of  Google Home), you can follow these steps.

Step 1:  make sure Google Home is connected to internet

You can change Google Home name (rename Google Home) only when Google Home is connected to internet.

If there are any issues with Google Home, you can check the LED light colors in the top touch panel in Google Home device.

Step 2: Start Google Home app

From any of your mobile devices which are connected to the same WiFi network as the Google Home device , start Google Home app.

This is the only way to change Google Home settings because Google Home does not have an user interface.

Unfortunately, you cannot use voice to change the name for Google Home, although you can use voice to control Google Home.

Step 3: Find Google Home device

In Google Home app, you can locate all Google Home devices, Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices

in two ways:
  • Tap the device icon in top right as shown in the screenshot below (marked as 1)
  • Tap the navigation menu (hamburger menu, marked as 2 in the screenshot below), then tap Devices.

These two methods lead to the identical devices page as shown below.

Step 4: enter Google Home device settings

In the list of devices, all Google Home, Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices that are currently connected to the same WiFi network can be found.

If you cannot find your Google Home, check the LED light colors to find out the possible problems.

As shown in screenshot above, for example, you can find the Google Home device named  “Family room Home”

Tap the menu button (3 vertical dots) of this device as shown above.

Tap Settings as shown above.

This will direct you to the Settings of this Google Home device.

Step 5: rename Google Home

As shown below, in the Device settings page tap the Name field.

You are then prompted to change the name of Google Home.

After renaming Google Home, tap OK as shown below.

Now, you can find this Google Home device by its new name, not the default name any more.

Can you rename Google Home? Do you know how to change the name for Google Home device now?

  • Didn't work for me and I followed directions exactly like you have it here. I was told that you can not change the name of Google home to give it commands. I have three of them and it is annoying that they all respond at the same time to OK Google.

    • What's exactly your problem? Can you rename them in Home app?

All your Google Home devices should be listening and ready to answer after hearing the hot word. But only one of them should answer if they are connected to the same router.

  • Hi,

I have 2 chromecasts, 1 chromecast audio and a new Google home.

Only the 2 chromecasts have 'settings' on the menu as documented above. The home and the chromecast audio only have the option to 'reboot'

    Any ideas?
    Regards

    • You may need wait a while. You can try to check the device tab again later.

You can also reboot the phone to see whether it helps.
